1O you who believe, do not take My enemy and your enemy as allies, extending affection to them when they have rejected the truth that has come to you. They drive out the Messenger and you because you believe in God, your Lord. If you have gone out striving in My cause and seeking My pleasure, you secretly show them affection — I know what you have concealed and what you have revealed. Whoever among you does this has strayed from the right path.
2If they gain the upper hand over you, they will be your enemies and stretch out their hands and tongues against you with malice, and they wish you would disbelieve.
3Your relatives and your children will never benefit you. On the Day of Resurrection He will separate you. And God is All-Seeing of what you do.
4There was certainly a fine example for you in Abraham and those with him, when they said to their people, “We are free of you and of what you worship besides God. We reject you, and enmity and hatred have appeared between us and you forever, until you believe in God alone” — except for Abraham’s saying to his father, “I will surely ask forgiveness for you, though I have no power to protect you from God in any way.” “Our Lord, in You we place our trust, and to You we turn, and to You is the final return.
5Our Lord, do not make us a trial for those who disbelieve, and forgive us, our Lord. You are the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.”
6Certainly there was a fine example in them for you — for whoever hopes in God and the Last Day. And whoever turns away, then surely God is the Self-Sufficient, the Praiseworthy.
7Perhaps God will place affection between you and those of them you have treated as enemies. God is All-Capable, and God is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
8God does not forbid you from being kind and just to those who have not fought you over religion and have not driven you from your homes. Truly, God loves those who are just.
9God only forbids you from allying yourselves with those who have fought you over religion, driven you from your homes, and supported your expulsion. Whoever allies with them — those are the wrongdoers.
10O you who believe, when believing women come to you as emigrants, test them. God knows best their faith. If you find them to be believers, do not return them to the disbelievers. They are not lawful for them, nor are they lawful for them. Give them what they spent. There is no blame on you in marrying them if you give them their bridal gifts. Do not hold on to the marriage ties of disbelieving women, and ask for what you spent, and let them ask for what they spent. That is God’s judgment; He judges between you. God is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
11If any of your wives have gone over to the disbelievers and you then retaliate, give those whose wives have left the equivalent of what they spent. Be mindful of God, in whom you believe.
12O Prophet, when believing women come to you pledging to you that they will not associate anything with God, nor steal, nor commit adultery, nor kill their children, nor bring a slander they have fabricated between their hands and their feet, nor disobey you in what is right, then accept their pledge and ask God to forgive them. Truly God is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
13O you who believe, do not ally yourselves with a people upon whom God’s wrath has fallen. They have despaired of the Hereafter just as the disbelievers have despaired of those in the graves.
