In the name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.

Alif Lam Ra. A Book We sent down to you so that you may bring people out of darkness into light, by their Lord’s permission, to the path of the Almighty, the Praiseworthy.

God—to whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Woe to the disbelievers from a severe punishment.

Those who prefer the life of this world over the Hereafter, and turn others from God’s path, and seek to make it crooked—they are in deep error.

We never sent a messenger except in the language of his people, so he could make things clear to them. Then God leads astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. He is the Almighty, the All-Wise.

Truly We sent Moses with Our miracles: “Bring your people out of darkness into light, and remind them of the days of God.” In that are miracles for everyone who is patient and grateful.

When Moses said to his people, “Remember God’s blessing upon you when He saved you from Pharaoh’s people, who were inflicting the worst torment on you, slaughtering your sons and sparing your women. In that was a tremendous trial from your Lord.”

When your Lord proclaimed, “If you are grateful, I will surely give you more, but if you are ungrateful, My punishment is truly severe.”

Moses said, “If you disbelieve—you and everyone on earth altogether—God is truly Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy.”

Has the news not reached you of those before you—the people of Noah, Ad, and Thamud, and those after them? None knows them but God. Their messengers came to them with clear proofs, but they thrust their hands into their mouths and said, “We reject what you have been sent with, and we are in deep, troubling doubt about what you call us to.”

Their messengers said, “Is there doubt about God, Originator of the heavens and the earth? He calls you to forgive you some of your sins and grant you respite until an appointed time.” They said, “You are nothing but humans like us. You want to turn us away from what our fathers used to worship. So bring us a clear authority.”

Their messengers said to them, “We are nothing but humans like you, but God bestows His favor on whomever He wills of His servants. It is not for us to bring you any authority except by God’s permission. And in God let the believers place their trust.

Why should we not place our trust in God when He has guided us to our paths? We will surely endure whatever harm you cause us. And in God let those who trust place their trust.”

Those who disbelieved said to their messengers, “We will surely drive you out of our land, or you will return to our creed.” So their Lord revealed to them, “We will surely destroy the wrongdoers.

And We will surely settle you in the land after them. That is for whoever fears My station and fears My threat.”

They sought victory, and every stubborn tyrant was brought to ruin.

Beyond him lies Hell, and he is given festering water to drink.

He gulps it but can barely swallow it. Death comes at him from every direction, yet he does not die, and beyond him lies a harsh punishment.

The example of those who disbelieve in their Lord: their deeds are like ashes lashed by wind on a stormy day. They have no power over anything they earned. That is the far-gone straying.

Do you not see that God created the heavens and the earth in truth? If He wills, He can remove you and bring a new creation.

And that is not difficult for God.

They all appear before God, and the weak say to those who were arrogant, “We were your followers — can you shield us from any of God’s punishment?” They say, “Had God guided us, we would have guided you. It is the same for us whether we panic or endure — there is no escape for us.”

And Satan says when the matter is settled, “Truly, God promised you the promise of truth, and I promised you but betrayed you. I had no authority over you — I merely called you and you answered me. So do not blame me; blame yourselves. I cannot rescue you, and you cannot rescue me. I reject what you associated me with before.” Surely the wrongdoers will have a painful punishment.

And those who believed and did righteous deeds are admitted into gardens beneath which rivers flow, dwelling there forever by their Lord’s permission. Their greeting therein is “Peace.”

Do you not see how God strikes an example? A good word is like a good tree — its roots firm and its branches in the sky.

Yielding its fruit every season by its Lord’s permission. God strikes examples for people so that they may reflect.

And the example of a foul word is like a foul tree, uprooted from the surface of the earth, having no stability.

God makes firm those who believe with the firm word in the life of this world and in the Hereafter. And God leads the wrongdoers astray. And God does what He wills.

Have you not seen those who exchanged God’s blessing for ingratitude and led their people to the abode of ruin?

Hell — they will burn in it. What a wretched settlement!

They set up rivals to God to lead others astray from His path. Say, “Enjoy yourselves, for your destination is the Fire.”

Tell My servants who believe to establish prayer and spend from what We have provided them, secretly and openly, before a Day comes in which there is no bargaining and no friendship.

God is the One who created the heavens and the earth, sent down water from the sky, and brought out with it fruits as provision for you. He subjected the ships to you, sailing through the sea by His command, and He subjected the rivers to you.

He subjected the sun and the moon to you, both in constant motion, and He subjected the night and the day to you.

He gave you of everything you asked Him for. If you tried to count God’s blessings, you could never enumerate them. Truly, man is deeply unjust, deeply ungrateful.

And when Abraham said, “My Lord, make this city secure, and keep me and my sons from worshiping idols.

My Lord, they have led so many people astray. So whoever follows me is of me, and whoever disobeys me — You are truly All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Our Lord, I have settled some of my descendants in a barren valley by Your Sacred House. Our Lord, so that they may establish prayer, make the hearts of people incline toward them, and provide them with fruits, so that they may be grateful.

Our Lord, You know what we conceal and what we reveal. Nothing on earth or in the sky is hidden from God.

Praise be to God, who granted me Ishmael and Isaac in my old age. Surely my Lord is the Hearer of supplication.

My Lord, make me one who establishes prayer, and from my descendants as well. Our Lord, accept my supplication.

Our Lord, forgive me, my parents, and the believers on the Day the reckoning is established.”

Do not think God is unaware of what the wrongdoers do. He only delays them until a Day when eyes will stare in horror.

Racing forward, heads craned upward, their gaze not returning to them, and their hearts hollow.

Warn the people of the Day when the punishment comes upon them, and those who wronged will say, “Our Lord, grant us a brief reprieve so we may answer Your call and follow the messengers.” Did you not swear before that there would be no end for you?

You dwelt in the homes of those who wronged themselves, and it was made clear to you how We dealt with them, and We set examples for you.

They schemed their schemes, but with God is their scheming — even if their scheming was such that mountains would crumble from it.

So do not think God will break His promise to His messengers. Truly God is All-Mighty, Possessor of retribution.

On the Day the earth is replaced by another earth, and the heavens too, and they emerge before God, the One, the Vanquisher.

You will see the criminals that Day bound together in chains.

Their garments of tar, and fire covering their faces.

So that God may recompense every soul for what it earned. Truly God is swift in reckoning.

This is a message for the people — so that they may be warned by it, and so that they may know that He is One God, and so that those of understanding may take heed.
