الر ۚ تِلْكَ آيَاتُ الْكِتَابِ وَقُرْآنٍ مُبِينٍ
Alif Lam Ra. These are the verses of the Book and a clear Quran.

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
In the name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.
رُبَمَا يَوَدُّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لَوْ كَانُوا مُسْلِمِينَ
Perhaps those who disbelieved will wish they had been Muslims.
ذَرْهُمْ يَأْكُلُوا وَيَتَمَتَّعُوا وَيُلْهِهِمُ الْأَمَلُ ۖ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ
Leave them to eat and enjoy themselves, and let hope distract them — they will come to know.
وَمَا أَهْلَكْنَا مِنْ قَرْيَةٍ إِلَّا وَلَهَا كِتَابٌ مَعْلُومٌ
We never destroyed a town except that it had a known decree.
مَا تَسْبِقُ مِنْ أُمَّةٍ أَجَلَهَا وَمَا يَسْتَأْخِرُونَ
No nation can advance its appointed time, nor can they delay it.
وَقَالُوا يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِي نُزِّلَ عَلَيْهِ الذِّكْرُ إِنَّكَ لَمَجْنُونٌ
They said, “O you upon whom the Reminder was sent down, you are truly mad.
لَوْ مَا تَأْتِينَا بِالْمَلَائِكَةِ إِنْ كُنْتَ مِنَ الصَّادِقِينَ
Why do you not bring us the angels, if you are among the truthful?”
مَا نُنَزِّلُ الْمَلَائِكَةَ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ وَمَا كَانُوا إِذًا مُنْظَرِينَ
We do not send down the angels except with the truth, and then they would not be given respite.
إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا الذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ
It is We who sent down the Reminder, and it is We who will preserve it.
وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا مِنْ قَبْلِكَ فِي شِيَعِ الْأَوَّلِينَ
We sent messengers before you among the factions of old.
وَمَا يَأْتِيهِمْ مِنْ رَسُولٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا بِهِ يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ
And no messenger came to them except that they mocked him.
كَذَٰلِكَ نَسْلُكُهُ فِي قُلُوبِ الْمُجْرِمِينَ
Thus We drive it into the hearts of the criminals.
لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِ ۖ وَقَدْ خَلَتْ سُنَّةُ الْأَوَّلِينَ
They do not believe in it, though the precedent of the ancients has already passed.
وَلَوْ فَتَحْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ بَابًا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ فَظَلُّوا فِيهِ يَعْرُجُونَ
Even if We opened for them a gate in the sky and they kept ascending through it.
لَقَالُوا إِنَّمَا سُكِّرَتْ أَبْصَارُنَا بَلْ نَحْنُ قَوْمٌ مَسْحُورُونَ
They would say, “Our eyes have been dazzled — rather, we are a bewitched people.”
وَلَقَدْ جَعَلْنَا فِي السَّمَاءِ بُرُوجًا وَزَيَّنَّاهَا لِلنَّاظِرِينَ
We placed constellations in the sky and adorned it for the beholders.
وَحَفِظْنَاهَا مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ رَجِيمٍ
And We guarded it from every accursed devil.
إِلَّا مَنِ اسْتَرَقَ السَّمْعَ فَأَتْبَعَهُ شِهَابٌ مُبِينٌ
Except one who steals a hearing, and a clear flame pursues him.
وَالْأَرْضَ مَدَدْنَاهَا وَأَلْقَيْنَا فِيهَا رَوَاسِيَ وَأَنْبَتْنَا فِيهَا مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ مَوْزُونٍ
And the earth — We spread it out, cast upon it firm mountains, and grew in it everything in due measure.
وَجَعَلْنَا لَكُمْ فِيهَا مَعَايِشَ وَمَنْ لَسْتُمْ لَهُ بِرَازِقِينَ
And We made in it livelihoods for you, and for those you do not provide for.
وَإِنْ مِنْ شَيْءٍ إِلَّا عِنْدَنَا خَزَائِنُهُ وَمَا نُنَزِّلُهُ إِلَّا بِقَدَرٍ مَعْلُومٍ
There is nothing whose treasuries are not with Us, and We do not send it down except in a known measure.
وَأَرْسَلْنَا الرِّيَاحَ لَوَاقِحَ فَأَنْزَلْنَا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً فَأَسْقَيْنَاكُمُوهُ وَمَا أَنْتُمْ لَهُ بِخَازِنِينَ
We sent the winds as pollinators, then sent down water from the sky and gave it to you to drink — and you are not its keepers.
وَإِنَّا لَنَحْنُ نُحْيِي وَنُمِيتُ وَنَحْنُ الْوَارِثُونَ
Truly it is We who give life and cause death, and We are the Inheritors.
وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا الْمُسْتَقْدِمِينَ مِنْكُمْ وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا الْمُسْتَأْخِرِينَ
We have known those among you who came before, and We have known those who came after.
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ يَحْشُرُهُمْ ۚ إِنَّهُ حَكِيمٌ عَلِيمٌ
Your Lord — it is He who will gather them. He is All-Wise, All-Knowing.
وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنْسَانَ مِنْ صَلْصَالٍ مِنْ حَمَإٍ مَسْنُونٍ
Certainly We created man from dried clay, from molded dark mud.
وَالْجَانَّ خَلَقْنَاهُ مِنْ قَبْلُ مِنْ نَارِ السَّمُومِ
And the jinn We created before him from the fire of scorching wind.
وَإِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَائِكَةِ إِنِّي خَالِقٌ بَشَرًا مِنْ صَلْصَالٍ مِنْ حَمَإٍ مَسْنُونٍ
And when your Lord said to the angels, “I am creating a human being from dried clay, from molded dark mud.
فَإِذَا سَوَّيْتُهُ وَنَفَخْتُ فِيهِ مِنْ رُوحِي فَقَعُوا لَهُ سَاجِدِينَ
So when I have fashioned him and breathed into him of My spirit, fall down before him in prostration.”
فَسَجَدَ الْمَلَائِكَةُ كُلُّهُمْ أَجْمَعُونَ
So the angels prostrated, all of them together.
إِلَّا إِبْلِيسَ أَبَىٰ أَنْ يَكُونَ مَعَ السَّاجِدِينَ
Except Iblis — he refused to be among those who prostrated.
قَالَ يَا إِبْلِيسُ مَا لَكَ أَلَّا تَكُونَ مَعَ السَّاجِدِينَ
He said, “O Iblis, what is the matter with you that you are not among those who prostrated?”
قَالَ لَمْ أَكُنْ لِأَسْجُدَ لِبَشَرٍ خَلَقْتَهُ مِنْ صَلْصَالٍ مِنْ حَمَإٍ مَسْنُونٍ
He said, “I would never prostrate to a human being You created from dried clay, from molded dark mud.”
قَالَ فَاخْرُجْ مِنْهَا فَإِنَّكَ رَجِيمٌ
He said, “Then get out of here, for you are accursed.
وَإِنَّ عَلَيْكَ اللَّعْنَةَ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ
And upon you is the curse until the Day of Judgment.”
قَالَ رَبِّ فَأَنْظِرْنِي إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ
He said, “My Lord, then grant me respite until the Day they are resurrected.”
قَالَ فَإِنَّكَ مِنَ الْمُنْظَرِينَ
He said, “You are among those granted respite.
إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ الْوَقْتِ الْمَعْلُومِ
Until the Day of the appointed time.”
قَالَ رَبِّ بِمَا أَغْوَيْتَنِي لَأُزَيِّنَنَّ لَهُمْ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَأُغْوِيَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
He said, “My Lord, because You have led me astray, I will surely make things alluring for them on earth, and I will surely lead them all astray.
إِلَّا عِبَادَكَ مِنْهُمُ الْمُخْلَصِينَ
Except Your devoted servants among them.”
قَالَ هَٰذَا صِرَاطٌ عَلَيَّ مُسْتَقِيمٌ
He said, “This is a straight path binding upon Me.
إِنَّ عِبَادِي لَيْسَ لَكَ عَلَيْهِمْ سُلْطَانٌ إِلَّا مَنِ اتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ الْغَاوِينَ
Over My servants you have no authority, except those who follow you from among the deviant.
وَإِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَمَوْعِدُهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
And Hell is surely the promised place for all of them.
لَهَا سَبْعَةُ أَبْوَابٍ لِكُلِّ بَابٍ مِنْهُمْ جُزْءٌ مَقْسُومٌ
It has seven gates; to each gate is an assigned portion of them.”
إِنَّ الْمُتَّقِينَ فِي جَنَّاتٍ وَعُيُونٍ
Truly the reverent will be in gardens and springs.
ادْخُلُوهَا بِسَلَامٍ آمِنِينَ
“Enter them in peace, secure.”
وَنَزَعْنَا مَا فِي صُدُورِهِمْ مِنْ غِلٍّ إِخْوَانًا عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مُتَقَابِلِينَ
And We will strip from their hearts whatever rancor there was — as brothers, on couches, facing one another.
لَا يَمَسُّهُمْ فِيهَا نَصَبٌ وَمَا هُمْ مِنْهَا بِمُخْرَجِينَ
No weariness will touch them there, nor will they ever be expelled from it.
نَبِّئْ عِبَادِي أَنِّي أَنَا الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ
Inform My servants that I am the All-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.
وَأَنَّ عَذَابِي هُوَ الْعَذَابُ الْأَلِيمُ
And that My punishment — it is the painful punishment.
وَنَبِّئْهُمْ عَنْ ضَيْفِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ
Tell them about Abraham’s guests.
إِذْ دَخَلُوا عَلَيْهِ فَقَالُوا سَلَامًا قَالَ إِنَّا مِنْكُمْ وَجِلُونَ
When they entered upon him and said, “Peace,” he said, “We are afraid of you.”
قَالُوا لَا تَوْجَلْ إِنَّا نُبَشِّرُكَ بِغُلَامٍ عَلِيمٍ
They said, “Do not be afraid. We bring you good news of a knowledgeable boy.”
قَالَ أَبَشَّرْتُمُونِي عَلَىٰ أَنْ مَسَّنِيَ الْكِبَرُ فَبِمَ تُبَشِّرُونَ
He said, “Do you bring me good news when old age has touched me? What good news do you bring?”
قَالُوا بَشَّرْنَاكَ بِالْحَقِّ فَلَا تَكُنْ مِنَ الْقَانِطِينَ
They said, “We bring you good news in truth, so do not be among those who despair.”
قَالَ وَمَنْ يَقْنَطُ مِنْ رَحْمَةِ رَبِّهِ إِلَّا الضَّالُّونَ
He said, “Who despairs of his Lord’s mercy except those who are astray?”
قَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكُمْ أَيُّهَا الْمُرْسَلُونَ
He said, “So what is your mission, O messengers?”
قَالُوا إِنَّا أُرْسِلْنَا إِلَىٰ قَوْمٍ مُجْرِمِينَ
They said, “We have been sent to a criminal people.
إِلَّا آلَ لُوطٍ إِنَّا لَمُنَجُّوهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
Except Lot’s family — we will save them all.
إِلَّا امْرَأَتَهُ قَدَّرْنَا ۙ إِنَّهَا لَمِنَ الْغَابِرِينَ
Except his wife — we have decreed that she will be among those who remain behind.”
فَلَمَّا جَاءَ آلَ لُوطٍ الْمُرْسَلُونَ
So when the messengers came to Lot’s family.
قَالَ إِنَّكُمْ قَوْمٌ مُنْكَرُونَ
He said, “You are people unknown to me.”
قَالُوا بَلْ جِئْنَاكَ بِمَا كَانُوا فِيهِ يَمْتَرُونَ
They said, “Rather, we have come to you with what they used to doubt.
وَأَتَيْنَاكَ بِالْحَقِّ وَإِنَّا لَصَادِقُونَ
We have come to you with the truth, and we are truthful.
فَأَسْرِ بِأَهْلِكَ بِقِطْعٍ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ وَاتَّبِعْ أَدْبَارَهُمْ وَلَا يَلْتَفِتْ مِنْكُمْ أَحَدٌ وَامْضُوا حَيْثُ تُؤْمَرُونَ
So travel with your family during a portion of the night, and follow behind them, and let none of you turn around, and go where you are commanded.”
وَقَضَيْنَا إِلَيْهِ ذَٰلِكَ الْأَمْرَ أَنَّ دَابِرَ هَٰؤُلَاءِ مَقْطُوعٌ مُصْبِحِينَ
We conveyed to him that decree: that the last remnant of those people would be cut off by morning.
وَجَاءَ أَهْلُ الْمَدِينَةِ يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ
The people of the city came rejoicing.
قَالَ إِنَّ هَٰؤُلَاءِ ضَيْفِي فَلَا تَفْضَحُونِ
He said, “These are my guests, so do not disgrace me.
وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَلَا تُخْزُونِ
Be mindful of God and do not humiliate me.”
قَالُوا أَوَلَمْ نَنْهَكَ عَنِ الْعَالَمِينَ
They said, “Did we not forbid you from all people?”
قَالَ هَٰؤُلَاءِ بَنَاتِي إِنْ كُنْتُمْ فَاعِلِينَ
He said, “Here are my daughters, if you must act.”
لَعَمْرُكَ إِنَّهُمْ لَفِي سَكْرَتِهِمْ يَعْمَهُونَ
By your life, they were wandering blindly in their intoxication.
فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ الصَّيْحَةُ مُشْرِقِينَ
So the blast seized them at sunrise.
فَجَعَلْنَا عَالِيَهَا سَافِلَهَا وَأَمْطَرْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ حِجَارَةً مِنْ سِجِّيلٍ
We turned it upside down and rained upon them stones of baked clay.
إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ لِلْمُتَوَسِّمِينَ
Surely in that are signs for those who read the signs.
وَإِنَّهَا لَبِسَبِيلٍ مُقِيمٍ
It lies along an established road.
إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
Surely in that is a sign for the believers.
وَإِنْ كَانَ أَصْحَابُ الْأَيْكَةِ لَظَالِمِينَ
The people of the Thicket were truly wrongdoers.
فَانْتَقَمْنَا مِنْهُمْ وَإِنَّهُمَا لَبِإِمَامٍ مُبِينٍ
So We took vengeance on them, and both are along a clear highway.
وَلَقَدْ كَذَّبَ أَصْحَابُ الْحِجْرِ الْمُرْسَلِينَ
Certainly the people of the Stone Valley denied the messengers.
وَآتَيْنَاهُمْ آيَاتِنَا فَكَانُوا عَنْهَا مُعْرِضِينَ
We gave them Our signs, but they turned away from them.
وَكَانُوا يَنْحِتُونَ مِنَ الْجِبَالِ بُيُوتًا آمِنِينَ
They used to carve houses from the mountains, feeling secure.
فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ الصَّيْحَةُ مُصْبِحِينَ
So the blast seized them at morning.
فَمَا أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُمْ مَا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ
Nothing they had earned availed them.
وَمَا خَلَقْنَا السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ ۗ وَإِنَّ السَّاعَةَ لَآتِيَةٌ ۖ فَاصْفَحِ الصَّفْحَ الْجَمِيلَ
We did not create the heavens and the earth and what is between them except in truth. The Hour is surely coming, so forgive with a gracious forgiveness.
إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ الْخَلَّاقُ الْعَلِيمُ
Your Lord is the Supreme Creator, the All-Knowing.
وَلَقَدْ آتَيْنَاكَ سَبْعًا مِنَ الْمَثَانِي وَالْقُرْآنَ الْعَظِيمَ
We have given you seven of the oft-repeated verses and the great Quran.
لَا تَمُدَّنَّ عَيْنَيْكَ إِلَىٰ مَا مَتَّعْنَا بِهِ أَزْوَاجًا مِنْهُمْ وَلَا تَحْزَنْ عَلَيْهِمْ وَاخْفِضْ جَنَاحَكَ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
Do not extend your eyes toward what We have given some pairs among them to enjoy, and do not grieve over them, and lower your wing to the believers.
وَقُلْ إِنِّي أَنَا النَّذِيرُ الْمُبِينُ
Say, “I am the clear warner.”
كَمَا أَنْزَلْنَا عَلَى الْمُقْتَسِمِينَ
Just as We sent down upon the dividers.
الَّذِينَ جَعَلُوا الْقُرْآنَ عِضِينَ
Those who made the Quran into fragments.
فَوَرَبِّكَ لَنَسْأَلَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
By your Lord, We will question them all.
عَمَّا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ
About what they used to do.
فَاصْدَعْ بِمَا تُؤْمَرُ وَأَعْرِضْ عَنِ الْمُشْرِكِينَ
So proclaim what you are commanded and turn away from the polytheists.
إِنَّا كَفَيْنَاكَ الْمُسْتَهْزِئِينَ
We are enough for you against the mockers.
الَّذِينَ يَجْعَلُونَ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَٰهًا آخَرَ ۚ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ
Those who set up another god alongside God — they will come to know.
وَلَقَدْ نَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ يَضِيقُ صَدْرُكَ بِمَا يَقُولُونَ
We certainly know that your chest tightens at what they say.
فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ وَكُنْ مِنَ السَّاجِدِينَ
So glorify your Lord with praise and be among those who prostrate.
وَاعْبُدْ رَبَّكَ حَتَّىٰ يَأْتِيَكَ الْيَقِينُ
Worship your Lord until the certainty comes to you.
