This is the Book in which there is no doubt, a guidance for the righteous.
Those who believe in the unseen, establish prayer, and spend from what We have provided them.
And those who believe in what was sent down to you and what was sent down before you, and of the Hereafter they are certain.
Those are upon guidance from their Lord, and those are the successful.
Truly, those who disbelieved—it is the same to them whether you warned them or did not warn them—they will not believe.
God has sealed their hearts and their hearing, and over their eyes is a veil, and for them is a great punishment.
Among people are those who say, “We believe in God and the Last Day,” yet they are not believers.
They try to deceive God and those who believe, but they deceive only themselves, and they do not realize it.
In their hearts is a disease, and God has increased them in disease. For them is a painful punishment because they used to lie.
When they are told, “Do not spread corruption on earth,” they say, “We are only peacemakers.”
Surely it is they who are the corrupters, but they do not realize it.
When they are told, “Believe as the people have believed,” they say, “Should we believe as the fools have believed?” Surely it is they who are the fools, but they do not know.
When they meet those who believe, they say, “We believe.” But when they are alone with their devils, they say, “We are with you; we were only mocking.”
God mocks them and extends them in their transgression, wandering blindly.
Those are the ones who purchased misguidance for guidance, so their trade brought no profit, and they were never guided.
Their example is like one who kindled a fire, and when it lit up what was around him, God took away their light and left them in darkness, unable to see.
Deaf, mute, blind—so they will not return.
Or like a rainstorm from the sky, in which is darkness, thunder, and lightning. They press their fingers into their ears against the thunderbolts in fear of death. And God encompasses the disbelievers.
The lightning nearly snatches their sight. Whenever it flashes for them, they walk in it, and when it darkens over them, they stand still. Had God willed, He could have taken their hearing and their sight. Truly, God is Capable of all things.
O people, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, so that you may be righteous.
He who made the earth a bed for you and the sky a canopy, and sent down rain from the sky, bringing out fruits as provision for you. So do not set up rivals to God while you know.
If you are in doubt about what We sent down upon Our servant, then produce a chapter like it and call upon your witnesses besides God, if you are truthful.
But if you do not—and you never will—then fear the Fire whose fuel is people and stones, prepared for the disbelievers.
And give good news to those who believe and do good deeds: that they will have gardens beneath which rivers flow. Every time they are provided with fruit from them, they will say, “This is what we were provided before.” They will be given things alike in appearance. They will have purified spouses there, and there they will remain forever.
God is not ashamed to strike a parable of a mosquito or what is above it. As for those who believe, they know it is the truth from their Lord. As for those who disbelieve, they say, “What did God intend by this as a parable?” He leads many astray by it and guides many by it. And He leads astray by it only the defiantly disobedient.
Those who break God’s covenant after it was sealed, and sever what God has commanded to be joined, and spread corruption on earth—those are the losers.
How can you disbelieve in God when you were dead and He gave you life? Then He will cause you to die, then bring you to life, then to Him you will be returned.
It is He who created for you all that is on the earth, then turned to the sky and fashioned it into seven heavens. And He is All-Knowing of all things.
When your Lord said to the angels, “I am placing a successor on the earth,” they said, “Will You place on it one who will spread corruption there and shed blood, while we glorify You with praise and declare Your holiness?” He said, “I know what you do not know.”
He taught Adam the names, all of them, then presented them to the angels and said, “Tell Me the names of these, if you are truthful.”
They said, “Glory be to You! We have no knowledge except what You have taught us. You are the All-Knowing, the All-Wise.”
He said, “O Adam, tell them their names.” And when he told them their names, He said, “Did I not tell you that I know the unseen of the heavens and the earth, and I know what you reveal and what you have been concealing?”
When We said to the angels, “Prostrate before Adam,” they all prostrated except Iblis. He refused and was arrogant, and he was among the disbelievers.
We said, “O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in the Garden, and eat freely from it wherever you wish, but do not approach this tree, or you will be among the wrongdoers.”
But Satan caused them to slip from it and removed them from what they had been in. We said, “Go down, some of you enemies to others. And on the earth you will have a dwelling place and provision for a time.”
Then Adam received words from his Lord, and He turned to him in mercy. Truly, He is the Ever-Relenting, the Most Merciful.
We said, “Go down from it, all of you. And when guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance — no fear will be upon them, nor will they grieve.”
But those who disbelieve and deny Our signs — they are the companions of the Fire. They will abide in it forever.
O Children of Israel, remember My blessing that I bestowed upon you, and fulfill My covenant and I will fulfill your covenant, and Me alone — fear Me.
Believe in what I have sent down, confirming what is with you, and do not be the first to deny it. Do not sell My verses for a petty price, and be mindful of Me alone.
Do not mix truth with falsehood, and do not conceal the truth while you know.
Establish prayer, give charity, and bow with those who bow.
Do you command people to righteousness while forgetting yourselves, even as you recite the Scripture? Will you not reason?
Seek help through patience and prayer. It is truly a burden, except for the humble.
Those who know they will meet their Lord and that to Him they will return.
O Children of Israel, remember My blessing that I bestowed upon you, and that I favored you over all peoples.
And fear a Day when no soul will avail another in the least, no intercession will be accepted from it, no ransom will be taken from it, and they will not be helped.
And when We saved you from Pharaoh’s people, who were inflicting on you the worst torment — slaughtering your sons and sparing your women. In that was a tremendous trial from your Lord.
And when We parted the sea for you, saving you and drowning Pharaoh’s people as you looked on.
And when We appointed for Moses forty nights, then you took the calf after him, and you were wrongdoers.
Then We pardoned you after that, so that you might be grateful.
When We gave Moses the Book and the criterion, so that you might be guided.
When Moses said to his people, “O my people, you have wronged yourselves by taking the calf. So repent to your Maker and kill yourselves. That is better for you with your Maker.” Then He accepted your repentance. Truly, He is the Ever-Accepting, the Most Merciful.
When you said, “O Moses, we will never believe you until we see God openly.” So the thunderbolt struck you while you looked on.
Then We raised you after your death, so that you might be grateful.
We shaded you with clouds and sent down to you manna and quails. “Eat from the good things We have provided you.” They did not wrong Us, but they were wronging themselves.
When We said, “Enter this town and eat freely from it wherever you wish, and enter the gate in prostration, and say, ‘Relieve us,’ and We will forgive your sins. And We will give more to those who do good.”
But those who wronged substituted a word other than what they were told, so We sent down upon those who wronged a plague from the sky for their defiance.
When Moses sought water for his people, We said, “Strike the rock with your staff.” Twelve springs burst from it. Each group knew its drinking place. “Eat and drink from God’s provision, and do not spread corruption in the land.”
When you said, “O Moses, we cannot endure one kind of food, so call upon your Lord to bring out for us what the earth grows — its herbs, its cucumbers, its garlic, its lentils, and its onions.” He said, “Would you exchange what is better for what is lesser? Go down to any town, and you will have what you asked for.” Humiliation and poverty were stamped upon them, and they drew upon themselves wrath from God. That was because they used to reject God’s signs and kill the prophets without right. That was because they disobeyed and kept transgressing.
Surely those who believe, and those who are Jewish, and the Christians, and the Sabians — whoever believed in God and the Last Day and did good — they will have their reward with their Lord. No fear will be upon them, nor will they grieve.
When We took your covenant and raised the mountain above you: “Hold firmly to what We have given you and remember what is in it, so that you might be mindful.”
Then you turned away after that. Were it not for God’s grace upon you and His mercy, you would have been among the losers.
You certainly knew those among you who transgressed regarding the Sabbath. So We said to them, “Be despised apes!”
We made it a deterring example for those present at the time and those after it, and a lesson for the God-conscious.
And when Moses said to his people, “God commands you to slaughter a cow.” They said, “Are you mocking us?” He said, “I seek refuge in God from being among the ignorant.”
They said, “Call upon your Lord for us to make clear to us what she is.” He said, “He says she is a cow neither old nor young, but middle-aged between that. So do what you are commanded.”
They said, “Call upon your Lord for us to make clear to us what her color is.” He said, “He says she is a bright yellow cow, vivid in color, pleasing to those who see her.”
They said, “Call upon your Lord for us to make clear to us what she is. The cows all look alike to us, and if God wills, we will surely be guided.”
He said, “He says she is a cow not broken to plow the earth nor to water the fields — unblemished, with no marking on her.” They said, “Now you have brought the truth.” So they slaughtered her, though they nearly did not.
And when you killed a man and disputed over it, but God was to bring out what you were concealing.
So We said, “Strike him with a piece of her.” Thus God brings the dead to life and shows you His signs, so that you may understand.
Then your hearts hardened after that, and they became like stones or even harder. For surely among stones are those from which rivers burst. And surely among them are those that split open and water flows from them. And surely among them are those that fall down in awe of God. And God is not unaware of what you do.
Do you hope that they will believe you, when a group of them used to hear God’s words then distort them after they had understood them, knowingly?
When they meet those who believe, they say, “We believe.” But when they are alone with one another, they say, “Do you tell them what God has revealed to you, so they can argue against you with it before your Lord? Do you not understand?”
Do they not know that God knows what they conceal and what they declare?
Among them are the unlettered who know nothing of the Scripture but wishful thinking, and they do nothing but speculate.
So woe to those who write the Scripture with their own hands then say, “This is from God,” to trade it for a small price. Woe to them for what their hands have written, and woe to them for what they earn.
They say, “The Fire will not touch us except for a few days.” Say, “Have you taken a covenant with God — for God never breaks His covenant — or do you say about God what you do not know?”
Yes — whoever earns evil and is engulfed by his sin, those are the companions of the Fire; they will remain in it forever.
Those who believe and do good deeds, those are the companions of the Garden; they will remain in it forever.
When We took the covenant of the Children of Israel: “You will worship none but God, and be good to your parents, to relatives, to orphans, and to the needy. Speak kindly to people, establish prayer, and give charity.” Then you turned away, except a few of you, and you were resistant.
When We took your covenant: “You will not shed your own blood, nor expel your own people from your homes.” Then you affirmed it, and you were witnesses.
Yet here you are, killing your own people, expelling a group of you from their homes, conspiring against them in sin and aggression. And if they come to you as captives, you ransom them — though their very expulsion was forbidden to you. Do you believe in part of the Scripture and reject the rest? The recompense for those among you who do that is nothing but disgrace in this life, and on the Day of Resurrection they will be driven to the harshest punishment. God is not unaware of what you do.
Those are the ones who purchased this life at the cost of the Hereafter. Their punishment will not be lightened, nor will they be helped.
Truly We gave Moses the Scripture and followed him with messengers after him. We gave Jesus son of Mary clear proofs and strengthened him with the Holy Spirit. Is it that whenever a messenger came to you with what your souls did not desire, you grew arrogant? Some you denied, and some you killed?
They said, “Our hearts are wrapped.” No, God has cursed them for their disbelief, so little do they believe.
When a Book came to them from God, confirming what was with them — and they used to pray for victory over the disbelievers before — yet when what they recognized came to them, they disbelieved in it. So God’s curse is upon the disbelievers.
Wretched is what they sold their souls for — disbelieving in what God sent down, out of envy that God would send down His grace upon whomever He wills of His servants. So they brought upon themselves wrath upon wrath. And for the disbelievers is a humiliating punishment.
When they are told, “Believe in what God has sent down,” they say, “We believe in what was sent down to us,” and they disbelieve in what came after it, though it is the truth confirming what is with them. Say, “Then why did you kill God’s prophets before, if you were believers?”
Certainly Moses came to you with clear proofs, then you took the calf after him, and you were wrongdoers.
And when We took your covenant and raised the mountain above you: “Hold firmly to what We have given you and listen.” They said, “We hear and we disobey.” And the calf was made to soak into their hearts because of their disbelief. Say, “Wretched is what your faith commands you, if you are believers.”
Say, “If the Home of the Hereafter with God is yours alone, excluding all other people, then wish for death, if you are truthful.”
But they will never wish for it, because of what their hands have sent ahead. And God is All-Knowing of the wrongdoers.
You will surely find them the most greedy of all people for life — even more than the polytheists. Each one of them wishes he could live a thousand years, yet being granted long life would not remove him from the punishment. And God is All-Seeing of what they do.
Say, “Whoever is an enemy of Gabriel — it is he who brought it down upon your heart by God’s permission, confirming what came before it, and as guidance and glad tidings for the believers.”
Whoever is an enemy of God, His angels, His messengers, Gabriel, and Michael — then truly God is an enemy of the disbelievers.
We have sent down to you clear verses, and none disbelieve in them except the defiantly disobedient.
Is it not that every time they made a covenant, a group among them cast it aside? Rather, most of them do not believe.
When a messenger from God came to them confirming what they had, a group of those who were given the Scripture threw God’s Book behind their backs as though they did not know.
They followed what the devils recited over Solomon’s kingdom. Solomon did not disbelieve, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people sorcery and what was sent down to the two angels in Babylon, Harut and Marut. Yet those two would not teach anyone without saying, “We are only a trial, so do not disbelieve.” Still, they learned from them what separates a man from his wife. But they could not harm anyone with it except by God’s permission. They learned what harmed them and did not benefit them. They certainly knew that whoever purchased it would have no share in the Hereafter. How wretched is what they sold their souls for—if only they knew.
Had they believed and been mindful, a reward from God would have been far better—if only they knew.
O you who believe, do not say “Attend to us” but say “Look upon us,” and listen. For the disbelievers there is a painful punishment.
Neither the disbelievers among the People of the Scripture nor the polytheists wish that any good be sent down to you from your Lord. But God singles out with His mercy whom He wills, and God is the Possessor of immense grace.
Whatever verse We abrogate or cause to be forgotten, We bring one better than it or equal to it. Do you not know that God is Capable of all things?
Do you not know that to God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and that you have no protector or helper besides God?
Or do you wish to question your Messenger as Moses was questioned before? Whoever exchanges faith for disbelief has truly strayed from the right path.
Many of the People of the Scripture wish they could turn you back to disbelief after your faith, out of envy from within themselves, even after the truth has become clear to them. So pardon and overlook until God brings His command. Truly, God is Capable of all things.
Establish the prayer and give the charity. Whatever good you send ahead for yourselves, you will find it with God. Surely God is All-Seeing of what you do.
They said, “No one will enter Paradise except those who are Jews or Christians.” Those are their wishful thoughts. Say, “Produce your proof, if you are truthful.”
Rather, whoever submits his face to God while being a doer of good will have his reward with his Lord. No fear will be upon them, nor will they grieve.
The Jews said, “The Christians stand on nothing,” and the Christians said, “The Jews stand on nothing,” yet they both recite the Scripture. So too, those who have no knowledge said the same as their words. God will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection regarding what they used to differ over.
Who is more unjust than one who prevents God’s houses of worship from having His name remembered in them and strives for their ruin? Those should not have entered them except in fear. For them in this world is disgrace, and for them in the Hereafter is a tremendous punishment.
To God belong the East and the West. Wherever you turn, there is God’s face. Truly, God is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing.
They said, “God has taken a son.” Glory be to Him! Rather, to Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth. All are devoutly obedient to Him.
Originator of the heavens and the earth — when He decrees a matter, He only says to it, “Be,” and it is.
Those who have no knowledge said, “Why does God not speak to us, or a sign come to us?” So too, those before them said the same as their words. Their hearts are alike. We have made the signs clear for a people who are certain.
We have sent you with the truth, as a bearer of good news and a warner, and you will not be asked about the companions of the Blaze.
The Jews will never be pleased with you, nor the Christians, until you follow their creed. Say, “God’s guidance is the true guidance.” If you were to follow their desires after the knowledge that has come to you, you would have no protector or helper against God.
Those to whom We gave the Scripture recite it as it should be recited — those truly believe in it. And whoever disbelieves in it — those are the losers.
O Children of Israel, remember My favor that I bestowed upon you, and that I preferred you over all peoples.
Fear a Day when no soul will avail another in the least, nor will any ransom be accepted from it, nor will any intercession benefit it, nor will they be helped.
When his Lord tested Abraham with certain words and he fulfilled them, He said, “I am making you a leader for mankind.” He said, “And from my descendants?” He said, “My covenant does not extend to the wrongdoers.”
When We made the House a place of return for mankind and a sanctuary — take the station of Abraham as a place of prayer — and We charged Abraham and Ishmael: “Purify My House for those who circle it, those who devote themselves there, and those who bow and prostrate.”
When Abraham said, “My Lord, make this a secure land and provide its people with fruits — those of them who believe in God and the Last Day.” He said, “And whoever disbelieves, I will grant him enjoyment for a little while, then I will drive him to the punishment of the Fire — and what a wretched destination!”
As Abraham was raising the foundations of the House, along with Ishmael: “Our Lord, accept this from us. You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
Our Lord, make us both submissive to You, and from our descendants a community submissive to You. Show us our rites and turn to us in mercy. You are the Ever-Relenting, the Most Merciful.
Our Lord, send among them a messenger from themselves who will recite to them Your verses, teach them the Book and wisdom, and purify them. You are the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.”
Who would turn away from the creed of Abraham except one who debases himself? We chose him in this world, and in the Hereafter he is surely among the righteous.
When his Lord said to him, “Submit,” he said, “I have submitted to the Lord of all worlds.”
Abraham charged his sons with this, as did Jacob: “O my sons, God has chosen this religion for you, so do not die except as those who have submitted.”
Were you witnesses when death came to Jacob, when he said to his sons, “What will you worship after me?” They said, “We will worship your God and the God of your fathers — Abraham, Ishmael, and Isaac — one God, and to Him we submit.”
That was a community that has passed away. To them is what they earned, and to you is what you have earned, and you will not be asked about what they used to do.
They said, “Be Jews or Christians, and you will be guided.” Say, “Rather, the creed of Abraham, a monotheist, and he was not of those who associate others with God.”
Say, “We believe in God and what was sent down to us, and what was sent down to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the tribes, and what Moses and Jesus were given, and what the prophets were given from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and to Him we submit.”
So if they believe in the like of what you believe in, they are guided. But if they turn away, they are only in opposition. God will suffice you against them. He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
The coloring of God! And who is better than God in coloring? And we are worshippers of Him.
Say, “Do you argue with us about God, when He is our Lord and your Lord? To us are our deeds and to you are your deeds, and we are devoted to Him alone.”
Or do you say that Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the tribes were Jews or Christians? Say, “Are you more knowing, or is God?” And who is more unjust than one who conceals a testimony he has from God? God is not unaware of what you do.
That was a community that has passed away. To it belongs what it earned, and to you belongs what you earned. You will not be asked about what they used to do.
The foolish among people will say, “What turned them away from the direction they used to face?” Say, “To God belong the east and the west. He guides whom He wills to a straight path.”
And so We made you a middle community, that you may be witnesses over humanity, and the Messenger may be a witness over you. We did not appoint the direction you used to face except to distinguish those who follow the Messenger from those who turn back on their heels. It was indeed a great trial, except for those whom God guided. God would never let your faith go to waste. Truly, God is Compassionate and Merciful toward people.
We see the turning of your face toward the sky. So We will turn you toward a direction that pleases you. Turn your face toward the Sacred Mosque. Wherever you are, turn your faces toward it. Those who were given the Scripture certainly know that it is the truth from their Lord. God is not unaware of what they do.
Even if you brought those who were given the Scripture every verse, they would not follow your direction. You are not a follower of their direction, nor are they followers of one another’s direction. If you were to follow their desires after the knowledge that has come to you, then you would surely be among the wrongdoers.
Those to whom We gave the Scripture recognize him as they recognize their own sons. Yet a group of them knowingly conceal the truth.
The truth is from your Lord, so never be among the doubters.
Each has a direction to which he turns. So race toward good deeds. Wherever you may be, God will bring you all together. Truly, God is Capable of all things.
From wherever you set out, turn your face toward the Sacred Mosque. It is certainly the truth from your Lord. And God is not unaware of what you do.
From wherever you set out, turn your face toward the Sacred Mosque. And wherever you may be, turn your faces toward it, so that people will have no argument against you — except those among them who do wrong — so do not fear them, but fear Me, and so that I may complete My favor upon you, and that you may be guided.
Just as We sent among you a messenger from among you, reciting Our verses to you, purifying you, teaching you the Scripture and wisdom, and teaching you what you did not know.
So remember Me, and I will remember you. Be grateful to Me and do not deny Me.
O you who believe, seek help through patience and prayer. Surely, God is with the patient.
Do not say of those who are killed in God’s cause that they are dead. Rather, they are alive, but you do not perceive it.
We will surely test you with something of fear, hunger, and loss of wealth, lives, and crops. So give good news to the patient.
Those who, when calamity strikes them, say, “Truly, we belong to God, and to Him we return.”
Upon them are blessings from their Lord, and mercy. Those are the rightly guided.
Truly, Safa and Marwa are among God’s rites. So whoever makes pilgrimage to the House or performs the lesser visit, there is no blame on him in walking between them. And whoever volunteers good, God is Appreciative, All-Knowing.
Those who conceal what We sent down of clear proofs and guidance after We made it clear to people in the Book—God curses them, and the cursers curse them.
Except those who repented, reformed, and made clear—those I will accept in repentance. I am the Ever-Accepting, the Most Merciful.
Those who disbelieved and died as disbelievers—upon them is the curse of God, the angels, and all of mankind.
Abiding in it forever. The punishment will not be lightened for them, nor will they be reprieved.
Your God is one God. There is no god but Him, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.
Truly, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, the alternation of night and day, the ships that sail the sea with what benefits people, the water God sent down from the sky—reviving the earth after its death and spreading in it every kind of creature—the shifting of the winds, and the clouds pressed into service between the sky and the earth, are signs for people who reason.
Yet among people are those who take rivals besides God, loving them as they love God. But those who believe are stronger in their love for God. If only the wrongdoers could see—when they see the punishment—that all power belongs to God, and that God is severe in punishment.
When those who were followed disowned those who followed them, and they saw the punishment, and all ties between them were severed.
Those who followed said, “If only we could have another turn, so we could disown them as they disowned us.” Thus God shows them their deeds as anguish upon them, and they will never leave the Fire.
O people, eat from what is on the earth, lawful and good, and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. He is truly a clear enemy to you.
He only commands you to evil and indecency, and to say about God what you do not know.
When they are told, “Follow what God has sent down,” they say, “No, we follow what we found our fathers upon.” Even if their fathers understood nothing and were not guided?
The example of those who disbelieve is like one who calls out to what hears nothing but cries and shouts. Deaf, mute, blind — they do not understand.
O you who believe, eat from the good things We have provided you and give thanks to God, if it is Him you worship.
He has only forbidden you carrion, blood, the flesh of swine, and what has been offered to other than God. But whoever is compelled, neither craving nor transgressing, no sin falls upon him. Truly, God is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
Those who conceal what God has sent down of the Book and sell it for a small price — they fill their bellies with nothing but Fire. God will not speak to them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them, and for them is a painful punishment.
Those are the ones who purchased misguidance in exchange for guidance, and punishment in exchange for forgiveness. How patient they are for the Fire!
That is because God sent down the Book with the truth. And those who differ over the Book are in extreme discord.
Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but righteous is he who believes in God, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets; and gives wealth despite his love for it to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask, and for freeing slaves; and establishes prayer and gives charity; and those who fulfill their covenant when they make one; and the patient in hardship, adversity, and in the heat of battle. Those are the ones who are truthful, and those are the righteous.
O you who believe, retribution is prescribed for you in cases of killing: the free for the free, the slave for the slave, the female for the female. But whoever is pardoned anything by his brother, let there be adherence to what is fair and payment to him with good grace. That is a relief from your Lord and a mercy. Whoever transgresses after that — for him is a painful punishment.
In retribution there is life for you, O people of understanding, so that you may be mindful.
Prescribed for you, when death approaches any of you and he leaves wealth behind, is the bequest to parents and close relatives in a fair manner — a duty upon the righteous.
Whoever alters it after hearing it, the sin falls only upon those who alter it. Surely, God is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
But whoever fears bias or sin from a testator and reconciles between them, no sin falls upon him. Truly, God is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
O you who believe, fasting has been prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may become God-conscious.
For a counted number of days. Whoever among you is ill or on a journey, then an equal number of other days. And for those who can barely endure it, a compensation: the feeding of a needy person. Whoever volunteers more good, it is better for him. And that you fast is better for you, if only you knew.
The month of Ramadan in which the Quran was sent down as guidance for people and as clear proofs of guidance and the criterion. So whoever among you witnesses the month, let him fast it. And whoever is ill or on a journey, then an equal number of other days. God intends ease for you and does not intend hardship for you, and so that you may complete the number and glorify God for having guided you, and so that you may be grateful.
When My servants ask you about Me, I am near. I answer the call of the caller when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me and believe in Me, that they may be rightly guided.
Permitted for you on the night of the fast is intimacy with your wives. They are a garment for you and you are a garment for them. God knew that you were betraying yourselves, so He turned to you and pardoned you. So now lie with them and seek what God has written for you. And eat and drink until the white thread becomes distinct to you from the black thread of dawn. Then complete the fast until nightfall. And do not lie with them while you are in retreat in the mosques. These are God’s limits, so do not go near them. Thus does God make His verses clear to people, so that they may become God-conscious.
Do not consume one another’s wealth unjustly, nor offer it to judges so that you may consume a portion of people’s wealth through sin while you know.
They ask you about the crescents. Say, “They are time-markers for people and for the pilgrimage.” Righteousness is not that you enter houses from their backs, but righteousness is in whoever is God-conscious. Enter houses from their doors, and be mindful of God so that you may succeed.
Fight in God’s cause those who fight you, but do not transgress. Truly, God does not love the transgressors.
Kill them wherever you find them and drive them out from where they drove you out. Persecution is worse than killing. Do not fight them at the Sacred Mosque unless they fight you there. But if they fight you, then kill them. Such is the recompense of the disbelievers.
But if they cease, then God is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
Fight them until there is no more persecution and religion belongs to God. But if they cease, then there is no hostility except against the wrongdoers.
The sacred month for the sacred month, and all sanctities are subject to retaliation. Whoever transgresses against you, transgress against him in the same measure. Be mindful of God, and know that God is with the God-conscious.
Spend in God’s cause and do not throw yourselves with your own hands into destruction. Do good, for God loves those who do good.
Complete the pilgrimage and the lesser pilgrimage for God. But if you are prevented, then whatever offering is easy to obtain. And do not shave your heads until the offering reaches its place of sacrifice. Whoever among you is ill or has an ailment of the head, then a ransom of fasting, charity, or ritual sacrifice. When you are secure, whoever enjoys the lesser pilgrimage leading up to the pilgrimage, then whatever offering is easy to obtain. Whoever cannot find one, then a fast of three days during the pilgrimage and seven when you return — that is ten in full. That is for those whose families are not present at the Sacred Mosque. Be mindful of God, and know that God is severe in punishment.
The pilgrimage is in appointed months. Whoever undertakes the pilgrimage in them — then no sexual talk, no wickedness, and no quarreling during the pilgrimage. Whatever good you do, God knows it. And take provision, for surely the best provision is righteousness. So be mindful of Me, O people of understanding.
There is no blame on you for seeking bounty from your Lord. When you pour down from Arafat, remember God at the Sacred Monument. Remember Him as He guided you, though before that you were among the astray.
Then pour down from where the people pour down, and seek God’s forgiveness. Truly, God is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
When you have completed your rites, remember God as you remember your fathers — or with even greater remembrance. Among the people are those who say, “Our Lord, give us in this world,” and they have no share in the Hereafter.
And among them are those who say, “Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.”
Those will have a share of what they earned. And God is swift in reckoning.
Remember God during the appointed days. Whoever hurries in two days, there is no sin on him, and whoever stays longer, there is no sin on him — for the one who is mindful. Be mindful of God, and know that to Him you will be gathered.
Among the people is one whose speech impresses you in the life of this world, and he calls God to witness what is in his heart, yet he is the fiercest of opponents.
When he turns away, he strives through the land to spread corruption in it and destroy crops and livestock. And God does not love corruption.
When he is told, “Fear God,” pride in sin seizes him. Hell is enough for him — and what a wretched resting place!
And among the people is one who sells his own self seeking God’s pleasure. And God is Compassionate to His servants.
O you who believe, enter into peace wholly, and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. He is a clear enemy to you.
If you slip after the clear proofs have come to you, then know that God is All-Mighty, All-Wise.
Are they waiting for nothing but that God should come to them in canopies of cloud, and the angels, and the matter is settled? To God all matters are returned.
Ask the Children of Israel how many clear signs We gave them. Whoever alters God’s blessing after it has come to him — truly God is severe in punishment.
The life of this world has been made alluring to those who disbelieve, and they mock those who believe. But the God-conscious will be above them on the Day of Resurrection. God provides for whoever He wills without measure.
Humanity was one community, so God sent the prophets as bearers of good news and as warners, and He sent down with them the Book in truth to judge between people in what they disagreed over. Yet none disagreed over it except those who were given it, after the clear proofs had come to them, out of rivalry among themselves. So God guided those who believed to the truth of what they had disagreed over, by His permission. God guides whoever He wills to a straight path.
Do you think you will enter Paradise without having faced what those before you faced? They were struck by hardship and adversity and were shaken until the messenger and those who believed with him said, “When will God’s help come?” Truly, God’s help is near.
They ask you what they should spend. Say, “Whatever good you spend should be for parents, relatives, orphans, the needy, and the traveler.” Whatever good you do, God is All-Knowing of it.
Fighting is prescribed for you, though you dislike it. Yet you may dislike something that is good for you, and you may love something that is bad for you. God knows, and you do not know.
They ask you about the sacred month—fighting in it. Say, “Fighting in it is grave, but blocking the way to God, denying Him, barring access to the Sacred Mosque, and driving its people out are graver in God’s sight. Persecution is graver than killing.” They will not stop fighting you until they turn you back from your religion, if they can. Whoever among you turns back from his religion and dies as a disbeliever—those are the ones whose deeds are nullified in this world and the Hereafter. Those are the companions of the Fire; they will remain in it forever.
Surely those who believed, and those who emigrated and strove in God’s cause—those hope for God’s mercy. God is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
They ask you about wine and gambling. Say, “In both there is great sin and some benefit for people, but their sin is greater than their benefit.” They ask you what they should spend. Say, “The surplus.” This is how God makes the verses clear to you, so that you may reflect.
On this world and the Hereafter. They ask you about orphans. Say, “Setting their affairs right is best. And if you mix your affairs with theirs, they are your brothers.” God knows the corrupter from the reformer. Had God willed, He could have made things difficult for you. Truly, God is All-Mighty, All-Wise.
Do not marry polytheist women until they believe. A believing slave woman is better than a polytheist woman, even if she pleases you. And do not give your women in marriage to polytheist men until they believe. A believing slave man is better than a polytheist man, even if he pleases you. Those invite to the Fire, while God invites to Paradise and forgiveness by His permission. He makes His verses clear to people so that they may remember.
They ask you about menstruation. Say, “It is a harm, so keep away from women during menstruation and do not approach them until they are clean. Then when they have purified themselves, come to them from where God has commanded you. Truly, God loves those who repent and loves those who purify themselves.”
Your women are a tillage for you, so come to your tillage however you wish. Send ahead for yourselves, be mindful of God, and know that you will meet Him. Give glad tidings to the believers.
Do not make God an excuse in your oaths against doing good, being mindful, and making peace between people. God is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
God does not hold you accountable for idle talk in your oaths, but He holds you accountable for what your hearts have earned. God is All-Forgiving, All-Forbearing.
For those who swear to abstain from their wives, there is a waiting period of four months. If they return, then God is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
But if they resolve on divorce, then God is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
Divorced women wait by themselves for three cycles. It is not lawful for them to conceal what God has created in their wombs, if they believe in God and the Last Day. Their husbands have more right to take them back during that period, if they desire reconciliation. They have rights similar to what is expected of them, according to what is fair. Yet men have a degree over them. God is All-Mighty, All-Wise.
Divorce is twice — then either retention with fairness or release with kindness. It is not lawful for you to take back anything of what you have given them, unless both fear that they cannot maintain God’s limits. If you fear that they cannot maintain God’s limits, there is no blame on either of them for what she gives back. These are God’s limits, so do not transgress them. Whoever transgresses God’s limits — those are the wrongdoers.
If he divorces her, she is not lawful to him after that until she marries another husband. If he then divorces her, there is no blame on either of them for returning to each other, provided they believe they can uphold God’s limits. These are God’s limits, which He makes clear to a people who know.
When you divorce women and they reach the end of their waiting period, either retain them in kindness or release them in kindness. Do not retain them to cause harm and transgress. Whoever does that has wronged himself. Do not take God’s verses in mockery. Remember God’s blessing upon you and what He sent down to you of the Book and wisdom, admonishing you through it. Be mindful of God, and know that God is All-Knowing of everything.
When you divorce women and they reach the end of their waiting period, do not prevent them from marrying their husbands if they agree among themselves in kindness. This is an admonition for whoever among you believes in God and the Last Day. That is more wholesome for you and more pure. God knows, and you do not know.
Mothers nurse their children for two full years, for those who wish to complete the nursing. The father is responsible for their provision and clothing in kindness. No soul is burdened beyond its capacity. No mother is harmed on account of her child, nor is a father on account of his child. The same obligation falls on the heir. If both parents wish to wean by mutual consent and consultation, there is no blame on them. And if you wish to have your children nursed by others, there is no blame on you provided you hand over what you have given in kindness. Be mindful of God, and know that God is All-Seeing of what you do.
Those among you who die and leave wives behind — their wives wait by themselves for four months and ten days. When they reach the end of their waiting period, there is no blame on you for what they do with themselves in kindness. God is All-Aware of what you do.
There is no blame on you for what you hint at in proposing to women, or for what you conceal in your hearts. God knows that you will think of them, but do not make secret promises to them except to speak in kindness. Do not resolve on the marriage tie until the prescribed period reaches its end. Know that God knows what is in your hearts, so beware of Him. And know that God is All-Forgiving, All-Forbearing.
There is no blame on you if you divorce women before you have touched them or set a dowry for them. But provide for them — the wealthy according to his means and the poor according to his means — a fair provision. This is a duty upon the good-doers.
If you divorce them before you have touched them but after you have set a dowry for them, then half of what you set is due — unless they waive it or the one in whose hand is the marriage tie waives it. That you waive is closer to righteousness. And do not forget generosity between you. Truly God is All-Seeing of what you do.
Guard your prayers, especially the middle prayer, and stand before God in devout obedience.
If you are in fear, then on foot or riding. But when you are secure, remember God as He taught you what you did not know.
Those of you who die and leave wives behind — a bequest for their wives: provision for a year without being expelled. But if they leave of their own accord, there is no blame on you for what they do with themselves in a fair manner. God is All-Mighty, All-Wise.
Divorced women are entitled to fair provision — a duty upon the righteous.
Thus God makes His verses clear to you, so that you may understand.
Have you not seen those who fled their homes in their thousands, fearing death? God said to them, “Die!” Then He brought them back to life. Surely God is full of grace toward people, but most people are not grateful.
Fight in God’s cause, and know that God is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
Who will lend God a good loan, that He may multiply it for him many times over? God withholds and extends, and to Him you will be returned.
Have you not seen the chiefs of the Children of Israel after Moses, when they said to a prophet of theirs, “Appoint a king for us so we may fight in God’s cause”? He said, “Is it possible that, if fighting is prescribed for you, you will not fight?” They said, “Why would we not fight in God’s cause when we have been driven from our homes and our children?” Yet when fighting was prescribed for them, they turned away — all but a few of them. God is All-Knowing of the wrongdoers.
Their prophet said to them, “God has appointed Saul as king over you.” They said, “How can he have kingship over us when we have more right to kingship than him, and he has not been given abundance of wealth?” He said, “God has chosen him over you and increased him abundantly in knowledge and stature. God grants His kingship to whom He wills. God is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing.”
Their prophet said to them, “The sign of his kingship is that the Ark will come to you, in which is tranquility from your Lord and relics of what the family of Moses and the family of Aaron left behind, borne by the angels. Surely in that is a sign for you, if you are believers.”
When Saul set out with the troops, he said, “God will test you with a river. Whoever drinks from it is not of me, and whoever does not taste it is of me — except one who scoops a handful with his hand.” They drank from it, all but a few of them. And when he and those who believed with him crossed it, they said, “We have no strength today against Goliath and his troops.” Those who were certain they would meet God said, “How many a small force has defeated a large force by God’s permission! And God is with the steadfast.”
When they faced Goliath and his troops, they said, “Our Lord, pour patience upon us, steady our feet, and grant us victory over the disbelieving people.”
So they defeated them by God’s permission, and David killed Goliath. God gave him kingship and wisdom and taught him what He willed. Were it not for God driving people back, some by means of others, the earth would have been corrupted. But God is full of grace to all the worlds.
These are God’s verses. We recite them to you in truth, and you are truly among the messengers.
Those messengers — We favored some of them over others. Among them were those to whom God spoke, and He raised some of them in degrees. We gave Jesus son of Mary the clear proofs and supported him with the Holy Spirit. Had God willed, those who came after them would not have fought one another after the clear proofs had come to them. But they differed — some of them believed and some of them disbelieved. Had God willed, they would not have fought one another, but God does what He wills.
O you who believe, spend from what We have provided you before a Day comes in which there is no bargaining, no friendship, and no intercession. And the disbelievers — they are the wrongdoers.
God—there is no god but He, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth. Who can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they encompass nothing of His knowledge except what He wills. His Throne extends over the heavens and the earth, and preserving them does not burden Him. He is the Most High, the Most Great.
There is no compulsion in religion. Right guidance has become clear from error. So whoever rejects false gods and believes in God has grasped the firmest handhold, one that never breaks. God is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
God is the Protector of those who believe—He brings them out of darkness into light. And those who disbelieve, their protectors are false gods—they bring them out of light into darkness. Those are the companions of the Fire; they will remain in it forever.
Have you not seen the one who argued with Abraham about his Lord because God had given him kingship? When Abraham said, “My Lord is the One who gives life and causes death,” he said, “I give life and cause death.” Abraham said, “God brings the sun from the east—bring it from the west.” So the disbeliever was dumbfounded. God does not guide the wrongdoing people.
Or the one who passed by a town that had collapsed upon its roofs. He said, “How will God bring this back to life after its death?” So God caused him to die for a hundred years, then raised him. He said, “How long have you remained?” He said, “I remained a day, or part of a day.” He said, “No, you have remained a hundred years. Look at your food and drink—they have not spoiled. And look at your donkey. And We will make you a sign for people. And look at the bones, how We raise them then clothe them with flesh.” When it became clear to him, he said, “I know that God has power over all things.”
When Abraham said, “My Lord, show me how You give life to the dead,” He said, “Have you not believed?” He said, “Yes, but so that my heart may be at rest.” He said, “Then take four birds and draw them to you, then place a part of them on each mountain, then call them—they will come to you in haste. And know that God is All-Mighty, All-Wise.”
The example of those who spend their wealth in God’s way is like a grain that sprouts seven ears, in each ear a hundred grains. God multiplies for whoever He wills. God is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing.
Those who spend their wealth in God’s way and then do not follow what they spent with reminders or harm — their reward is with their Lord. No fear will be upon them, nor will they grieve.
A kind word and forgiveness are better than charity followed by harm. God is Self-Sufficient, All-Forbearing.
O you who believe, do not nullify your charity with reminders and harm, like one who spends his wealth to be seen by people and does not believe in God and the Last Day. His example is like a smooth stone covered with soil — a downpour strikes it and leaves it bare. They gain nothing from what they earned. God does not guide the disbelieving people.
The example of those who spend their wealth seeking God’s pleasure and to strengthen their own souls is like a garden on a hilltop — a downpour strikes it and it yields double its fruit. And if no downpour strikes it, then a drizzle suffices. God is All-Seeing of what you do.
Would any of you wish to have a garden of palms and grapevines, rivers flowing beneath it, with every kind of fruit in it for him, then old age strikes him while he has feeble children, and a fiery whirlwind strikes it and it burns up? Thus God makes the signs clear to you, so that you may reflect.
O you who believe, spend from the good things you have earned and from what We have brought out for you from the earth. Do not aim for the worthless of it to spend, when you yourselves would not take it unless you closed your eyes to it. And know that God is Self-Sufficient, All-Praiseworthy.
Satan promises you poverty and commands you to indecency, but God promises you forgiveness from Him and bounty. God is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing.
He grants wisdom to whoever He wills, and whoever is granted wisdom has been given abundant good. Yet none take heed except people of understanding.
Whatever you spend in charity or vow as a vow, God knows it. And the wrongdoers have no helpers.
If you disclose your charitable gifts, that is good. But if you conceal them and give them to the poor, that is better for you, and He will remove some of your misdeeds from you. God is All-Aware of what you do.
Their guidance is not upon you, but God guides whoever He wills. Whatever good you spend is for your own souls, and you do not spend except seeking God’s face. Whatever good you spend will be repaid to you in full, and you will not be wronged.
For the poor who are confined in God’s cause, unable to travel in the land — the ignorant would think them wealthy because of their restraint. You recognize them by their mark: they do not beg people persistently. Whatever good you spend, God is truly Knowing of it.
Those who spend their wealth by night and by day, secretly and openly — they have their reward with their Lord. No fear will be upon them, nor will they grieve.
Those who consume usury will not stand except as one stands whom Satan has struck with madness. That is because they said, “Trade is just like usury.” But God has permitted trade and forbidden usury. Whoever receives a warning from his Lord and stops, he may keep what is past, and his affair rests with God. But whoever returns — those are the companions of the Fire, dwelling in it forever.
God destroys usury and nourishes charity. God does not love any ungrateful sinner.
Truly, those who believed, did righteous deeds, established prayer, and gave charity — their reward awaits them with their Lord. No fear will come upon them, nor will they grieve.
O you who believe, be mindful of God and give up whatever remains of usury, if you are believers.
If you do not, then be warned of war from God and His Messenger. But if you repent, you may have your principal — you do no wrong and are not wronged.
If the debtor is in hardship, then grant respite until a time of ease. And to give it as charity is better for you, if only you knew.
And be mindful of a Day when you will be returned to God. Then every soul will be paid in full what it earned, and they will not be wronged.
O you who believe, when you contract a debt with one another for a stated term, write it down. Let a scribe write between you with justice. No scribe should refuse to write as God has taught him. So let him write, and let the one upon whom the obligation falls dictate, and let him be mindful of God, his Lord, and not diminish anything from it. If the one upon whom the obligation falls is feeble-minded, or weak, or unable to dictate himself, then let his guardian dictate with justice. Call two witnesses from among your men. If there are not two men, then one man and two women from those you approve as witnesses — so that if one of them errs, the other may remind her. Witnesses must not refuse when they are called. Do not grow weary of writing it down, whether small or large, along with its term. That is more just in God’s sight, more reliable for testimony, and more likely to prevent your doubt — unless it is an immediate transaction you conduct among yourselves, in which case there is no blame on you if you do not write it down. Have witnesses when you trade with one another. No scribe or witness should be harmed. If you do so, it is truly wickedness on your part. Be mindful of God, and God teaches you. God is All-Knowing of all things.
If you are on a journey and cannot find a scribe, then a pledge held in hand. But if you trust one another, then let the one who is trusted fulfill his trust, and let him be mindful of God, his Lord. Do not conceal testimony. Whoever conceals it — truly his heart is sinful. God is All-Knowing of what you do.
To God belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth. Whether you reveal what is in yourselves or conceal it, God will hold you to account for it. He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills. God is Capable of all things.
The Messenger believed in what was sent down to him from his Lord, and so did the believers. Each believed in God, His angels, His books, and His messengers. “We make no distinction between any of His messengers.” They said, “We hear and we obey. Your forgiveness, our Lord. To You is the return.”
God does not burden a soul beyond its capacity. It receives what it has earned, and upon it is what it has earned. Our Lord, do not hold us accountable if we forget or err. Our Lord, do not lay upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, do not burden us with what we have no strength to bear. Pardon us, forgive us, and have mercy on us. You are our Protector, so grant us victory over the disbelieving people.
