The Criterion · al-Furqan · سورة الفرقان · 77 ayahs

In the name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.

Blessed is He who sent down the Criterion upon His servant, that he may be a warner to all peoples.

He to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, who has not taken a child, who has no partner in dominion, who created everything and measured it precisely.

Yet they have taken gods besides Him that create nothing and are themselves created, that have no power over harm or benefit for themselves, and have no power over death, life, or resurrection.

Those who disbelieve say, “This is nothing but a lie he fabricated, and other people helped him with it.” They have committed injustice and falsehood.

They say, “Legends of the ancients that he had written down, dictated to him morning and evening.”

Say, “It was sent down by Him who knows every secret in the heavens and the earth. Truly, He is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”

They say, “What is with this messenger? He eats food and walks through the markets! Why was an angel not sent down to him to be a warner alongside him?

Or a treasure cast down to him, or a garden given to him from which he eats?” The wrongdoers say, “You follow nothing but a bewitched man.”

Look how they coin comparisons for you—they have gone astray and cannot find a way.

Blessed is He who, if He willed, could give you better than that—gardens beneath which rivers flow—and give you palaces.

But they deny the Hour, and We have prepared a Blaze for whoever denies the Hour.

When it sees them from a distant place, they hear its raging and roaring.

When they are thrown into a tight space within it, shackled together, they cry out for destruction.

Do not cry for one destruction today—cry for many destructions!

Say, “Is that better, or the Garden of Eternity promised to the righteous?” It is their reward and destination.

In it they have whatever they wish, dwelling forever. It is a promise binding upon your Lord.

On the Day He gathers them and what they worship besides God, He will say, “Was it you who led these servants of Mine astray, or did they stray from the path on their own?”

They will say, “Glory be to You! It was not for us to take any protectors besides You, but You gave them and their fathers comfort until they forgot the Reminder and became a ruined people.”

So they have denied you in what you say, and you can neither avert nor help yourselves. Whoever among you does wrong, We will make him taste a terrible punishment.

We never sent any messengers before you except that they ate food and walked through the markets. We have made some of you a trial for others—will you be patient? Your Lord is All-Seeing.

Those who do not expect to meet Us said, “Why are angels not sent down to us, or why do we not see our Lord?” They have grown arrogant within themselves and exceeded in great insolence.

The Day they see the angels — no good news that Day for the criminals — and they will say, “Forbidden, utterly forbidden!”

We will turn to whatever deeds they did and make them scattered dust.

The people of Paradise that Day will have the best abode and the finest resting place.

The Day the sky splits open with clouds and the angels are sent down in successive descent.

True sovereignty that Day belongs to the Most Merciful. And it will be a Day grievous for the disbelievers.

The Day the wrongdoer bites his hands, saying, “If only I had taken a path with the Messenger!

O woe to me! If only I had not taken so-and-so as a close friend!

He truly led me astray from the Reminder after it had come to me.” And Satan has always been a foresaker of man.

The Messenger said, “O my Lord, truly my people have abandoned this Quran.”

And so We made for every prophet an enemy from among the criminals. But your Lord is sufficient as a Guide and a Helper.

Those who disbelieved said, “Why was the Quran not sent down to him all at once?” It was so, that We might strengthen your heart with it, and We revealed it in stages.

They never bring you an argument except that We bring you the truth and a better explanation.

Those who will be dragged on their faces to Hell — they are worst in position and most astray in path.

We gave Moses the Scripture and appointed his brother Aaron with him as a minister.

We said, “Go, both of you, to the people who denied Our signs.” Then We destroyed them utterly.

And the people of Noah — when they denied the messengers, We drowned them and made them a sign for mankind. And We have prepared for the wrongdoers a painful punishment.

And Ad and Thamud and the people of the Well and many generations in between.

To each We set examples, and each We destroyed completely.

They have surely passed by the town that was rained upon with a rain of evil. Did they not see it? No — they did not expect resurrection.

When they see you, they only take you in mockery: “Is this the one God sent as a messenger?

He nearly would have led us astray from our gods, had we not held firmly to them.” They will know, when they see the punishment, who is most astray in path.

Have you seen the one who takes his own desire as his god? Will you then be a guardian over him?

Or do you think that most of them hear or understand? They are nothing but like cattle — rather, they are more astray in path.

Have you not seen how your Lord extended the shade? Had He willed, He could have made it still. Then We made the sun a guide over it.

Then We drew it back to Us gradually.

He is the One who made the night a garment for you, and sleep a rest, and made the day a resurrection.

He is the One who sent the winds as glad tidings before His mercy. And We sent down from the sky purifying water.

To revive with it a dead land and to give drink to what We created — livestock and many people.

Certainly We have distributed it among them so they might reflect, yet most people refuse anything but ingratitude.

Had We willed, We could have sent a warner to every town.

So do not obey the disbelievers, and strive against them with it a great striving.

He is the One who released the two seas — this one sweet and fresh, that one salty and bitter — and placed between them a barrier and an impassable boundary.

He is the One who created from water a human being, then made him of lineage and marriage. Your Lord is All-Powerful.

Yet they worship besides God what neither benefits them nor harms them. The disbeliever is ever a supporter against his Lord.

We have not sent you except as a bearer of good news and a warner.

Say, “I ask you no payment for this — only that whoever wills may take a path to his Lord.”

Put your trust in the Ever-Living who never dies, and glorify Him with praise. He is sufficient as All-Aware of His servants’ sins.

He who created the heavens and the earth and everything between them in six days, then rose over the Throne — the Most Merciful. So ask about Him one who is well-informed.

When they are told, “Prostrate to the Most Merciful,” they say, “And what is the Most Merciful? Should we prostrate to whatever you command us?” And it only increases their aversion.

Blessed is He who placed constellations in the sky and placed in it a lamp and a luminous moon.

He is the One who made the night and the day follow each other, for whoever wishes to reflect or wishes to be grateful.

The servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth humbly, and when the ignorant address them, they say, “Peace.”

And those who spend the night before their Lord, prostrating and standing.

And those who say, “Our Lord, turn away from us the punishment of Hell — truly its punishment is relentless.

It is terrible as a resting place and a residence.”

And those who, when they spend, are neither extravagant nor stingy, but keep a balance between the two.

And those who do not invoke another god alongside God, and do not kill the soul that God has forbidden except by right, and do not commit adultery. Whoever does that will meet a penalty.

The punishment will be multiplied for him on the Day of Resurrection, and he will remain in it, humiliated.

Except whoever repents, believes, and does righteous deeds — for those, God will replace their evil deeds with good ones. And God is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

And whoever repents and does righteous deeds truly turns to God in sincere repentance.

And those who do not bear false witness, and when they pass by idle talk, they pass with dignity.

And those who, when reminded of their Lord’s verses, do not fall upon them deaf and blind.

And those who say, “Our Lord, grant us from our spouses and offspring the delight of our eyes, and make us a model for the righteous.”

Those will be rewarded with the highest chambers for their patience, and will be met there with greetings and peace.

Abiding there forever — how excellent a resting place and a residence.

Say, “My Lord would not care about you were it not for your supplication. But you have denied, so it will be inescapable.”
