بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
In the name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.
تِلْكَ آيَاتُ الْكِتَابِ الْمُبِينِ
These are the verses of the clear Book.
لَعَلَّكَ بَاخِعٌ نَفْسَكَ أَلَّا يَكُونُوا مُؤْمِنِينَ
Perhaps you will destroy yourself with grief because they will not believe.
إِنْ نَشَأْ نُنَزِّلْ عَلَيْهِمْ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ آيَةً فَظَلَّتْ أَعْنَاقُهُمْ لَهَا خَاضِعِينَ
If We willed, We could send down upon them a sign from the sky, and their necks would remain bowed before it in submission.
وَمَا يَأْتِيهِمْ مِنْ ذِكْرٍ مِنَ الرَّحْمَٰنِ مُحْدَثٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا عَنْهُ مُعْرِضِينَ
No new reminder comes to them from the Most Merciful except that they turn away from it.
فَقَدْ كَذَّبُوا فَسَيَأْتِيهِمْ أَنْبَاءُ مَا كَانُوا بِهِ يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ
They have already denied, so the news of what they used to mock will come to them.
أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا إِلَى الْأَرْضِ كَمْ أَنْبَتْنَا فِيهَا مِنْ كُلِّ زَوْجٍ كَرِيمٍ
Have they not looked at the earth—how many of every noble kind We have caused to grow in it?
إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُمْ مُؤْمِنِينَ
Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them were not believers.
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الرَّحِيمُ
And your Lord—He is truly the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.
وَإِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبُّكَ مُوسَىٰ أَنِ ائْتِ الْقَوْمَ الظَّالِمِينَ
And when your Lord called Moses, “Go to the wrongdoing people.
قَوْمَ فِرْعَوْنَ ۚ أَلَا يَتَّقُونَ
The people of Pharaoh. Will they not be mindful?”
قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّي أَخَافُ أَنْ يُكَذِّبُونِ
He said, “My Lord, I fear they will deny me.
وَيَضِيقُ صَدْرِي وَلَا يَنْطَلِقُ لِسَانِي فَأَرْسِلْ إِلَىٰ هَارُونَ
My chest tightens and my tongue does not flow freely, so send for Aaron.
وَلَهُمْ عَلَيَّ ذَنْبٌ فَأَخَافُ أَنْ يَقْتُلُونِ
And they hold a charge against me, so I fear they will kill me.”
قَالَ كَلَّا ۖ فَاذْهَبَا بِآيَاتِنَا ۖ إِنَّا مَعَكُمْ مُسْتَمِعُونَ
He said, “No! Go, both of you, with Our signs. We are with you, listening.
فَأْتِيَا فِرْعَوْنَ فَقُولَا إِنَّا رَسُولُ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
Go to Pharaoh and say, ‘We are the messenger of the Lord of all worlds.
أَنْ أَرْسِلْ مَعَنَا بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ
That you send the Children of Israel with us.’”
قَالَ أَلَمْ نُرَبِّكَ فِينَا وَلِيدًا وَلَبِثْتَ فِينَا مِنْ عُمُرِكَ سِنِينَ
He said, “Did we not raise you among us as a child, and you stayed among us for years of your life?
وَفَعَلْتَ فَعْلَتَكَ الَّتِي فَعَلْتَ وَأَنْتَ مِنَ الْكَافِرِينَ
And you committed that deed of yours—and you were among the ungrateful.”
قَالَ فَعَلْتُهَا إِذًا وَأَنَا مِنَ الضَّالِّينَ
He said, “I did it then while I was among the misguided.
فَفَرَرْتُ مِنْكُمْ لَمَّا خِفْتُكُمْ فَوَهَبَ لِي رَبِّي حُكْمًا وَجَعَلَنِي مِنَ الْمُرْسَلِينَ
So I fled from you when I feared you, and my Lord granted me wisdom and made me one of the messengers.
وَتِلْكَ نِعْمَةٌ تَمُنُّهَا عَلَيَّ أَنْ عَبَّدْتَ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ
And is that a favor you remind me of—that you enslaved the Children of Israel?”
قَالَ فِرْعَوْنُ وَمَا رَبُّ الْعَالَمِينَ
Pharaoh said, “What is the Lord of the worlds?”
قَالَ رَبُّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا ۖ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ مُوقِنِينَ
He said, “The Lord of the heavens and the earth and everything between them, if you would be certain.”
قَالَ لِمَنْ حَوْلَهُ أَلَا تَسْتَمِعُونَ
He said to those around him, “Do you not hear?”
قَالَ رَبُّكُمْ وَرَبُّ آبَائِكُمُ الْأَوَّلِينَ
He said, “Your Lord and the Lord of your earliest forefathers.”
قَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَكُمُ الَّذِي أُرْسِلَ إِلَيْكُمْ لَمَجْنُونٌ
He said, “This messenger of yours who has been sent to you is truly mad!”
قَالَ رَبُّ الْمَشْرِقِ وَالْمَغْرِبِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا ۖ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ
He said, “The Lord of the east and the west and everything between them, if you would reason.”
قَالَ لَئِنِ اتَّخَذْتَ إِلَٰهًا غَيْرِي لَأَجْعَلَنَّكَ مِنَ الْمَسْجُونِينَ
He said, “If you take any god other than me, I will surely make you one of the imprisoned!”
قَالَ أَوَلَوْ جِئْتُكَ بِشَيْءٍ مُبِينٍ
He said, “Even if I brought you something clear?”
قَالَ فَأْتِ بِهِ إِنْ كُنْتَ مِنَ الصَّادِقِينَ
He said, “Then bring it, if you are truthful.”
فَأَلْقَىٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِيَ ثُعْبَانٌ مُبِينٌ
So he cast his staff, and suddenly it was a serpent, plain for all to see.
وَنَزَعَ يَدَهُ فَإِذَا هِيَ بَيْضَاءُ لِلنَّاظِرِينَ
And he drew out his hand, and suddenly it was white to the onlookers.
قَالَ لِلْمَلَإِ حَوْلَهُ إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَسَاحِرٌ عَلِيمٌ
He said to the chiefs around him, “This is truly a skilled sorcerer.
يُرِيدُ أَنْ يُخْرِجَكُمْ مِنْ أَرْضِكُمْ بِسِحْرِهِ فَمَاذَا تَأْمُرُونَ
He wants to drive you out of your land with his sorcery. So what do you advise?”
قَالُوا أَرْجِهْ وَأَخَاهُ وَابْعَثْ فِي الْمَدَائِنِ حَاشِرِينَ
They said, “Delay him and his brother, and send gatherers through the cities.
يَأْتُوكَ بِكُلِّ سَحَّارٍ عَلِيمٍ
To bring you every skilled sorcerer.”
فَجُمِعَ السَّحَرَةُ لِمِيقَاتِ يَوْمٍ مَعْلُومٍ
So the sorcerers were assembled at the appointed time on a designated day.
وَقِيلَ لِلنَّاسِ هَلْ أَنْتُمْ مُجْتَمِعُونَ
And the people were told, “Will you gather together.
لَعَلَّنَا نَتَّبِعُ السَّحَرَةَ إِنْ كَانُوا هُمُ الْغَالِبِينَ
So that we may follow the sorcerers if they are the victors?”
فَلَمَّا جَاءَ السَّحَرَةُ قَالُوا لِفِرْعَوْنَ أَئِنَّ لَنَا لَأَجْرًا إِنْ كُنَّا نَحْنُ الْغَالِبِينَ
When the sorcerers came, they said to Pharaoh, “Will there truly be a reward for us if we are the victors?”
قَالَ نَعَمْ وَإِنَّكُمْ إِذًا لَمِنَ الْمُقَرَّبِينَ
He said, “Yes, and you will then be among those brought near.”
قَالَ لَهُمْ مُوسَىٰ أَلْقُوا مَا أَنْتُمْ مُلْقُونَ
Moses said to them, “Cast whatever you will cast.”
فَأَلْقَوْا حِبَالَهُمْ وَعِصِيَّهُمْ وَقَالُوا بِعِزَّةِ فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّا لَنَحْنُ الْغَالِبُونَ
So they cast their ropes and their staffs and said, “By Pharaoh’s might, we will surely be the victors!”
فَأَلْقَىٰ مُوسَىٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِيَ تَلْقَفُ مَا يَأْفِكُونَ
Then Moses cast his staff, and suddenly it swallowed up what they had fabricated.
فَأُلْقِيَ السَّحَرَةُ سَاجِدِينَ
So the sorcerers fell down prostrating.
قَالُوا آمَنَّا بِرَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
They said, “We believe in the Lord of the worlds.
رَبِّ مُوسَىٰ وَهَارُونَ
The Lord of Moses and Aaron!”
قَالَ آمَنْتُمْ لَهُ قَبْلَ أَنْ آذَنَ لَكُمْ ۖ إِنَّهُ لَكَبِيرُكُمُ الَّذِي عَلَّمَكُمُ السِّحْرَ فَلَسَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ ۚ لَأُقَطِّعَنَّ أَيْدِيَكُمْ وَأَرْجُلَكُمْ مِنْ خِلَافٍ وَلَأُصَلِّبَنَّكُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
He said, “You believed in him before I gave you permission? He is surely your chief who taught you sorcery. Soon you will know. I will cut off your hands and feet on opposite sides, and I will crucify you all!”
قَالُوا لَا ضَيْرَ ۖ إِنَّا إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا مُنْقَلِبُونَ
They said, “No harm. To our Lord we are returning.
إِنَّا نَطْمَعُ أَنْ يَغْفِرَ لَنَا رَبُّنَا خَطَايَانَا أَنْ كُنَّا أَوَّلَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ
We hope that our Lord will forgive us our sins, since we are the first of the believers.”
وَأَوْحَيْنَا إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ أَنْ أَسْرِ بِعِبَادِي إِنَّكُمْ مُتَّبَعُونَ
We revealed to Moses, “Travel by night with My servants — you will be pursued.”
فَأَرْسَلَ فِرْعَوْنُ فِي الْمَدَائِنِ حَاشِرِينَ
So Pharaoh sent gatherers through the cities.
إِنَّ هَٰؤُلَاءِ لَشِرْذِمَةٌ قَلِيلُونَ
“These are but a small band.
وَإِنَّهُمْ لَنَا لَغَائِظُونَ
And they have enraged us.
وَإِنَّا لَجَمِيعٌ حَاذِرُونَ
And we are all on alert.”
فَأَخْرَجْنَاهُمْ مِنْ جَنَّاتٍ وَعُيُونٍ
So We drove them out of gardens and springs.
وَكُنُوزٍ وَمَقَامٍ كَرِيمٍ
And treasures and noble dwellings.
كَذَٰلِكَ وَأَوْرَثْنَاهَا بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ
So it was, and We made the Children of Israel inherit them.
فَأَتْبَعُوهُمْ مُشْرِقِينَ
So they pursued them at sunrise.
فَلَمَّا تَرَاءَى الْجَمْعَانِ قَالَ أَصْحَابُ مُوسَىٰ إِنَّا لَمُدْرَكُونَ
When the two groups saw each other, Moses’ companions said, “We are overtaken!”
قَالَ كَلَّا ۖ إِنَّ مَعِيَ رَبِّي سَيَهْدِينِ
He said, “No! My Lord is with me — He will guide me.”
فَأَوْحَيْنَا إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ أَنِ اضْرِبْ بِعَصَاكَ الْبَحْرَ ۖ فَانْفَلَقَ فَكَانَ كُلُّ فِرْقٍ كَالطَّوْدِ الْعَظِيمِ
So We revealed to Moses, “Strike the sea with your staff.” It split apart, and each part was like a towering mountain.
وَأَزْلَفْنَا ثَمَّ الْآخَرِينَ
And We brought the others near to that place.
وَأَنْجَيْنَا مُوسَىٰ وَمَنْ مَعَهُ أَجْمَعِينَ
And We saved Moses and all who were with him.
ثُمَّ أَغْرَقْنَا الْآخَرِينَ
Then We drowned the others.
إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُمْ مُؤْمِنِينَ
Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them were not believers.
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الرَّحِيمُ
And truly your Lord — He is the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.
وَاتْلُ عَلَيْهِمْ نَبَأَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ
And recite to them the story of Abraham.
إِذْ قَالَ لِأَبِيهِ وَقَوْمِهِ مَا تَعْبُدُونَ
When he said to his father and his people, “What do you worship?”
قَالُوا نَعْبُدُ أَصْنَامًا فَنَظَلُّ لَهَا عَاكِفِينَ
They said, “We worship idols, and we remain devoted to them.”
قَالَ هَلْ يَسْمَعُونَكُمْ إِذْ تَدْعُونَ
He said, “Do they hear you when you call?
أَوْ يَنْفَعُونَكُمْ أَوْ يَضُرُّونَ
Or do they benefit you, or harm you?”
قَالُوا بَلْ وَجَدْنَا آبَاءَنَا كَذَٰلِكَ يَفْعَلُونَ
They said, “Rather, we found our fathers doing the same.”
قَالَ أَفَرَأَيْتُمْ مَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْبُدُونَ
He said, “Have you considered what you have been worshiping.
أَنْتُمْ وَآبَاؤُكُمُ الْأَقْدَمُونَ
You and your ancient forefathers?
فَإِنَّهُمْ عَدُوٌّ لِي إِلَّا رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ
They are all enemies to me, except the Lord of all worlds.
الَّذِي خَلَقَنِي فَهُوَ يَهْدِينِ
He who created me, and He guides me.
وَالَّذِي هُوَ يُطْعِمُنِي وَيَسْقِينِ
And He who feeds me and gives me drink.
وَإِذَا مَرِضْتُ فَهُوَ يَشْفِينِ
And when I fall ill, He heals me.
وَالَّذِي يُمِيتُنِي ثُمَّ يُحْيِينِ
And He who will cause me to die, then bring me back to life.
وَالَّذِي أَطْمَعُ أَنْ يَغْفِرَ لِي خَطِيئَتِي يَوْمَ الدِّينِ
And He whom I hope will forgive my sin on the Day of Judgment.
رَبِّ هَبْ لِي حُكْمًا وَأَلْحِقْنِي بِالصَّالِحِينَ
My Lord, grant me wisdom and join me with the righteous.
وَاجْعَلْ لِي لِسَانَ صِدْقٍ فِي الْآخِرِينَ
And grant me a reputation of truth among later generations.
وَاجْعَلْنِي مِنْ وَرَثَةِ جَنَّةِ النَّعِيمِ
And make me among the inheritors of the Garden of Bliss.
وَاغْفِرْ لِأَبِي إِنَّهُ كَانَ مِنَ الضَّالِّينَ
And forgive my father — he was truly among the misguided.
وَلَا تُخْزِنِي يَوْمَ يُبْعَثُونَ
And do not disgrace me on the Day they are resurrected.
يَوْمَ لَا يَنْفَعُ مَالٌ وَلَا بَنُونَ
The Day when neither wealth nor children will be of any use.
إِلَّا مَنْ أَتَى اللَّهَ بِقَلْبٍ سَلِيمٍ
Except for whoever comes to God with a sound heart.”
وَأُزْلِفَتِ الْجَنَّةُ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ
And Paradise was brought near for the righteous.
وَبُرِّزَتِ الْجَحِيمُ لِلْغَاوِينَ
And Hellfire was laid bare for the deviants.
وَقِيلَ لَهُمْ أَيْنَ مَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْبُدُونَ
And they were told, “Where is what you used to worship.
مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ هَلْ يَنْصُرُونَكُمْ أَوْ يَنْتَصِرُونَ
Besides God? Can they help you, or help themselves?”
فَكُبْكِبُوا فِيهَا هُمْ وَالْغَاوُونَ
So they were hurled into it — they and the deviants.
وَجُنُودُ إِبْلِيسَ أَجْمَعُونَ
And the soldiers of Iblis, all together.
قَالُوا وَهُمْ فِيهَا يَخْتَصِمُونَ
They said, quarreling within it.
تَاللَّهِ إِنْ كُنَّا لَفِي ضَلَالٍ مُبِينٍ
“By God, we were clearly in error.
إِذْ نُسَوِّيكُمْ بِرَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
When we made you equal to the Lord of all worlds.
وَمَا أَضَلَّنَا إِلَّا الْمُجْرِمُونَ
And none led us astray but the criminals.
فَمَا لَنَا مِنْ شَافِعِينَ
So we have no intercessors.
وَلَا صَدِيقٍ حَمِيمٍ
Nor any close friend.
فَلَوْ أَنَّ لَنَا كَرَّةً فَنَكُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ
If only we could have another chance, so we could be among the believers.”
إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُمْ مُؤْمِنِينَ
Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them were not believers.
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الرَّحِيمُ
And truly your Lord — He is the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.
كَذَّبَتْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍ الْمُرْسَلِينَ
The people of Noah denied the messengers.
إِذْ قَالَ لَهُمْ أَخُوهُمْ نُوحٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ
When their brother Noah said to them, “Will you not be righteous?
إِنِّي لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌ
I am a trustworthy messenger to you.
فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ
So be mindful of God and obey me.
وَمَا أَسْأَلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَجْرٍ ۖ إِنْ أَجْرِيَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
I ask you no payment for it. My payment is only from the Lord of all worlds.
فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ
So be mindful of God and obey me.”
قَالُوا أَنُؤْمِنُ لَكَ وَاتَّبَعَكَ الْأَرْذَلُونَ
They said, “Should we believe in you when the lowest of people have followed you?”
قَالَ وَمَا عِلْمِي بِمَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ
He said, “What knowledge do I have of what they used to do?
إِنْ حِسَابُهُمْ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّي ۖ لَوْ تَشْعُرُونَ
Their account is only with my Lord, if you could perceive.
وَمَا أَنَا بِطَارِدِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ
I will not drive away the believers.
إِنْ أَنَا إِلَّا نَذِيرٌ مُبِينٌ
I am only a clear warner.”
قَالُوا لَئِنْ لَمْ تَنْتَهِ يَا نُوحُ لَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْمَرْجُومِينَ
They said, “If you do not stop, O Noah, you will surely be among those stoned.”
قَالَ رَبِّ إِنَّ قَوْمِي كَذَّبُونِ
He said, “My Lord, my people have denied me.
فَافْتَحْ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَهُمْ فَتْحًا وَنَجِّنِي وَمَنْ مَعِيَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ
So judge between me and them decisively, and save me and those with me of the believers.”
فَأَنْجَيْنَاهُ وَمَنْ مَعَهُ فِي الْفُلْكِ الْمَشْحُونِ
So We saved him and those with him in the laden ship.
ثُمَّ أَغْرَقْنَا بَعْدُ الْبَاقِينَ
Then We drowned the rest.
إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُمْ مُؤْمِنِينَ
Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them were not believers.
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الرَّحِيمُ
And your Lord is truly the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.
كَذَّبَتْ عَادٌ الْمُرْسَلِينَ
Ad denied the messengers.
إِذْ قَالَ لَهُمْ أَخُوهُمْ هُودٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ
When their brother Hud said to them, “Will you not be righteous?
إِنِّي لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌ
I am a trustworthy messenger to you.
فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ
So be mindful of God and obey me.
وَمَا أَسْأَلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَجْرٍ ۖ إِنْ أَجْرِيَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
I ask you no payment for it. My payment is only from the Lord of all worlds.
أَتَبْنُونَ بِكُلِّ رِيعٍ آيَةً تَعْبَثُونَ
Do you build a monument on every hilltop to amuse yourselves?
وَتَتَّخِذُونَ مَصَانِعَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَخْلُدُونَ
And take up fortresses as though you will live forever?
وَإِذَا بَطَشْتُمْ بَطَشْتُمْ جَبَّارِينَ
And when you strike, you strike as tyrants?
فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ
So be mindful of God and obey me.
وَاتَّقُوا الَّذِي أَمَدَّكُمْ بِمَا تَعْلَمُونَ
Be mindful of the One who provided you with what you know.
أَمَدَّكُمْ بِأَنْعَامٍ وَبَنِينَ
Provided you with livestock and sons.
وَجَنَّاتٍ وَعُيُونٍ
And gardens and springs.
إِنِّي أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ
I fear for you the punishment of a tremendous Day.”
قَالُوا سَوَاءٌ عَلَيْنَا أَوَعَظْتَ أَمْ لَمْ تَكُنْ مِنَ الْوَاعِظِينَ
They said, “It is the same to us whether you preach or are not among the preachers.
إِنْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا خُلُقُ الْأَوَّلِينَ
This is nothing but the custom of the ancients.
وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُعَذَّبِينَ
And we will not be punished.”
فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَهْلَكْنَاهُمْ ۗ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُمْ مُؤْمِنِينَ
So they denied him, and We destroyed them. Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them were not believers.
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الرَّحِيمُ
And your Lord is truly the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.
كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ الْمُرْسَلِينَ
Thamud denied the messengers.
إِذْ قَالَ لَهُمْ أَخُوهُمْ صَالِحٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ
When their brother Salih said to them, “Will you not be righteous?
إِنِّي لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌ
I am a trustworthy messenger to you.
فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ
So be mindful of God and obey me.
وَمَا أَسْأَلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَجْرٍ ۖ إِنْ أَجْرِيَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
I ask you no payment for it. My payment rests only with the Lord of all worlds.
أَتُتْرَكُونَ فِي مَا هَاهُنَا آمِنِينَ
Do you think you will be left secure in what is here?
فِي جَنَّاتٍ وَعُيُونٍ
In gardens and springs.
وَزُرُوعٍ وَنَخْلٍ طَلْعُهَا هَضِيمٌ
And crops and palm trees with tender fruit-sheaths.
وَتَنْحِتُونَ مِنَ الْجِبَالِ بُيُوتًا فَارِهِينَ
And you carve homes from the mountains with great skill?
فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ
So be mindful of God and obey me.
وَلَا تُطِيعُوا أَمْرَ الْمُسْرِفِينَ
And do not obey the command of the excessive.
الَّذِينَ يُفْسِدُونَ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا يُصْلِحُونَ
Who spread corruption in the land and do not reform.”
قَالُوا إِنَّمَا أَنْتَ مِنَ الْمُسَحَّرِينَ
They said, “You are nothing but one of the bewitched.
مَا أَنْتَ إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِثْلُنَا فَأْتِ بِآيَةٍ إِنْ كُنْتَ مِنَ الصَّادِقِينَ
You are only a human like us. So bring a sign, if you are truthful.”
قَالَ هَٰذِهِ نَاقَةٌ لَهَا شِرْبٌ وَلَكُمْ شِرْبُ يَوْمٍ مَعْلُومٍ
He said, “This is a she-camel. She has her turn to drink, and you have your turn to drink on an appointed day.
وَلَا تَمَسُّوهَا بِسُوءٍ فَيَأْخُذَكُمْ عَذَابُ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ
Do not touch her with harm, or the punishment of a terrible day will seize you.”
فَعَقَرُوهَا فَأَصْبَحُوا نَادِمِينَ
But they hamstrung her, and by morning they were full of regret.
فَأَخَذَهُمُ الْعَذَابُ ۗ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُمْ مُؤْمِنِينَ
So the punishment seized them. Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them were not believers.
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الرَّحِيمُ
And truly your Lord is the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.
كَذَّبَتْ قَوْمُ لُوطٍ الْمُرْسَلِينَ
The people of Lot denied the messengers.
إِذْ قَالَ لَهُمْ أَخُوهُمْ لُوطٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ
When their brother Lot said to them, “Will you not be righteous?
إِنِّي لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌ
I am a trustworthy messenger to you.
فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ
So be mindful of God and obey me.
وَمَا أَسْأَلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَجْرٍ ۖ إِنْ أَجْرِيَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
I ask you no payment for it. My payment rests only with the Lord of all worlds.
أَتَأْتُونَ الذُّكْرَانَ مِنَ الْعَالَمِينَ
Do you approach males from among all beings?
وَتَذَرُونَ مَا خَلَقَ لَكُمْ رَبُّكُمْ مِنْ أَزْوَاجِكُمْ ۚ بَلْ أَنْتُمْ قَوْمٌ عَادُونَ
And leave what your Lord created for you of your wives? No, you are a transgressing people.”
قَالُوا لَئِنْ لَمْ تَنْتَهِ يَا لُوطُ لَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْمُخْرَجِينَ
They said, “If you do not stop, O Lot, you will surely be among those expelled.”
قَالَ إِنِّي لِعَمَلِكُمْ مِنَ الْقَالِينَ
He said, “I am truly one who detests your deed.
رَبِّ نَجِّنِي وَأَهْلِي مِمَّا يَعْمَلُونَ
My Lord, save me and my family from what they do.”
فَنَجَّيْنَاهُ وَأَهْلَهُ أَجْمَعِينَ
So We saved him and his family, all of them.
إِلَّا عَجُوزًا فِي الْغَابِرِينَ
Except an old woman among those who stayed behind.
ثُمَّ دَمَّرْنَا الْآخَرِينَ
Then We destroyed the others.
وَأَمْطَرْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ مَطَرًا ۖ فَسَاءَ مَطَرُ الْمُنْذَرِينَ
And We rained upon them a rain — how wretched was the rain of those who had been warned.
إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُمْ مُؤْمِنِينَ
Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them were not believers.
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الرَّحِيمُ
And truly your Lord is the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.
كَذَّبَ أَصْحَابُ الْأَيْكَةِ الْمُرْسَلِينَ
The companions of the woodland denied the messengers.
إِذْ قَالَ لَهُمْ شُعَيْبٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ
When Shuayb said to them, “Will you not be righteous?
إِنِّي لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌ
I am a trustworthy messenger to you.
فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ
So be mindful of God and obey me.
وَمَا أَسْأَلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَجْرٍ ۖ إِنْ أَجْرِيَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
I ask you no payment for it. My payment rests only with the Lord of all worlds.
أَوْفُوا الْكَيْلَ وَلَا تَكُونُوا مِنَ الْمُخْسِرِينَ
Give full measure and do not be among those who cause loss.
وَزِنُوا بِالْقِسْطَاسِ الْمُسْتَقِيمِ
And weigh with an even balance.
وَلَا تَبْخَسُوا النَّاسَ أَشْيَاءَهُمْ وَلَا تَعْثَوْا فِي الْأَرْضِ مُفْسِدِينَ
And do not cheat people of their things, and do not go about spreading corruption in the land.
وَاتَّقُوا الَّذِي خَلَقَكُمْ وَالْجِبِلَّةَ الْأَوَّلِينَ
And be mindful of Him who created you and the earlier generations.”
قَالُوا إِنَّمَا أَنْتَ مِنَ الْمُسَحَّرِينَ
They said, “You are nothing but one of the bewitched.
وَمَا أَنْتَ إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِثْلُنَا وَإِنْ نَظُنُّكَ لَمِنَ الْكَاذِبِينَ
You are only a human like us, and we think you are among the liars.
فَأَسْقِطْ عَلَيْنَا كِسَفًا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ إِنْ كُنْتَ مِنَ الصَّادِقِينَ
So bring down upon us fragments of the sky, if you are truthful.”
قَالَ رَبِّي أَعْلَمُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ
He said, “My Lord knows best what you do.”
فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَخَذَهُمْ عَذَابُ يَوْمِ الظُّلَّةِ ۚ إِنَّهُ كَانَ عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ
So they denied him, and the punishment of the day of the shadow seized them. It was truly the punishment of a terrible day.
إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُمْ مُؤْمِنِينَ
Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them were not believers.
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الرَّحِيمُ
And truly your Lord is the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.
وَإِنَّهُ لَتَنْزِيلُ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
Truly, it is a revelation from the Lord of all worlds.
نَزَلَ بِهِ الرُّوحُ الْأَمِينُ
The Trustworthy Spirit brought it down.
عَلَىٰ قَلْبِكَ لِتَكُونَ مِنَ الْمُنْذِرِينَ
Upon your heart, so that you may be among the warners.
بِلِسَانٍ عَرَبِيٍّ مُبِينٍ
In a clear Arabic tongue.
وَإِنَّهُ لَفِي زُبُرِ الْأَوَّلِينَ
And it is in the scriptures of the ancients.
أَوَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُمْ آيَةً أَنْ يَعْلَمَهُ عُلَمَاءُ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ
Is it not a sign for them that the scholars of the Children of Israel recognize it?
وَلَوْ نَزَّلْنَاهُ عَلَىٰ بَعْضِ الْأَعْجَمِينَ
Had We sent it down upon some non-Arab.
فَقَرَأَهُ عَلَيْهِمْ مَا كَانُوا بِهِ مُؤْمِنِينَ
And he had recited it to them, they would not have believed in it.
كَذَٰلِكَ سَلَكْنَاهُ فِي قُلُوبِ الْمُجْرِمِينَ
Thus We have driven it into the hearts of the criminals.
لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِ حَتَّىٰ يَرَوُا الْعَذَابَ الْأَلِيمَ
They will not believe in it until they see the painful punishment.
فَيَأْتِيَهُمْ بَغْتَةً وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ
It will come upon them suddenly while they are unaware.
فَيَقُولُوا هَلْ نَحْنُ مُنْظَرُونَ
Then they will say, “Will we be given respite?”
أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا يَسْتَعْجِلُونَ
Do they seek to hasten Our punishment?
أَفَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ مَتَّعْنَاهُمْ سِنِينَ
Have you considered: if We let them enjoy themselves for years.
ثُمَّ جَاءَهُمْ مَا كَانُوا يُوعَدُونَ
Then what they were promised came to them.
مَا أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُمْ مَا كَانُوا يُمَتَّعُونَ
What good would their years of enjoyment do them?
وَمَا أَهْلَكْنَا مِنْ قَرْيَةٍ إِلَّا لَهَا مُنْذِرُونَ
We never destroyed a town without it having warners.
ذِكْرَىٰ وَمَا كُنَّا ظَالِمِينَ
As a reminder. And We were never unjust.
وَمَا تَنَزَّلَتْ بِهِ الشَّيَاطِينُ
The devils did not bring it down.
وَمَا يَنْبَغِي لَهُمْ وَمَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ
It does not befit them, nor could they.
إِنَّهُمْ عَنِ السَّمْعِ لَمَعْزُولُونَ
They are barred from even hearing it.
فَلَا تَدْعُ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَٰهًا آخَرَ فَتَكُونَ مِنَ الْمُعَذَّبِينَ
So do not invoke another god alongside God, lest you be among those punished.
وَأَنْذِرْ عَشِيرَتَكَ الْأَقْرَبِينَ
And warn your closest kin.
وَاخْفِضْ جَنَاحَكَ لِمَنِ اتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ
And lower your wing to those who follow you among the believers.
فَإِنْ عَصَوْكَ فَقُلْ إِنِّي بَرِيءٌ مِمَّا تَعْمَلُونَ
If they disobey you, say, “I am innocent of what you do.”
وَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى الْعَزِيزِ الرَّحِيمِ
And put your trust in the Almighty, the Most Merciful.
الَّذِي يَرَاكَ حِينَ تَقُومُ
Who sees you when you stand.
وَتَقَلُّبَكَ فِي السَّاجِدِينَ
And your movements among those who prostrate.
إِنَّهُ هُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ
He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
هَلْ أُنَبِّئُكُمْ عَلَىٰ مَنْ تَنَزَّلُ الشَّيَاطِينُ
Shall I tell you upon whom the devils descend?
تَنَزَّلُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ أَفَّاكٍ أَثِيمٍ
They descend upon every sinful liar.
يُلْقُونَ السَّمْعَ وَأَكْثَرُهُمْ كَاذِبُونَ
They lend an ear, and most of them are liars.
وَالشُّعَرَاءُ يَتَّبِعُهُمُ الْغَاوُونَ
As for the poets—the misguided follow them.
أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّهُمْ فِي كُلِّ وَادٍ يَهِيمُونَ
Do you not see that they wander in every valley.
وَأَنَّهُمْ يَقُولُونَ مَا لَا يَفْعَلُونَ
And that they say what they do not do?
إِلَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ وَذَكَرُوا اللَّهَ كَثِيرًا وَانْتَصَرُوا مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا ظُلِمُوا ۗ وَسَيَعْلَمُ الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا أَيَّ مُنْقَلَبٍ يَنْقَلِبُونَ
Except those who believe, do righteous deeds, remember God often, and defend themselves after they have been wronged. And those who have done wrong will come to know what fate they will be turned to.
