These are the verses of the clear Book.
We recite to you from the account of Moses and Pharaoh in truth, for a people who believe.
Truly, Pharaoh exalted himself in the land and divided its people into factions, oppressing a group among them—slaughtering their sons and sparing their women. He was among the corrupters.
And We wished to favor those who were oppressed in the land, and to make them leaders, and to make them the inheritors.
And to establish them in the land, and to show Pharaoh and Haman and their soldiers through them the very thing they feared.
We inspired Moses’s mother: “Nurse him, and when you fear for him, cast him into the river. Do not be afraid and do not grieve. We will return him to you and make him one of the messengers.”
So Pharaoh’s household picked him up, only for him to become an enemy and a source of grief to them. Surely Pharaoh and Haman and their soldiers were sinners.
Pharaoh’s wife said, “A delight to my eye and yours—do not kill him. Perhaps he will benefit us, or we may adopt him as a son.” And they did not perceive.
And the heart of Moses’s mother became empty. She nearly disclosed him, had We not strengthened her heart so that she would be among the believers.
She said to his sister, “Follow him.” So she watched him from a distance while they did not perceive.
And We had forbidden wet-nurses for him before, so she said, “Shall I direct you to a household who will care for him for you and be sincere to him?”
So We returned him to his mother, that her eye might be cooled and she would not grieve, and that she would know that God’s promise is true—but most of them do not know.
When he reached his full strength and maturity, We gave him judgment and knowledge. Thus do We recompense those who do good.
He entered the city at a time when its people were unaware, and he found in it two men fighting — one from his own faction and the other from his enemy. The one from his faction called on him for help against the one from his enemy, so Moses struck him and killed him. He said, “This is the work of Satan. He is truly a misleading, open enemy.”
He said, “My Lord, I have wronged myself, so forgive me.” So He forgave him. He is the All-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.
He said, “My Lord, for the favor You have bestowed on me, I will never be a supporter of the guilty.”
So he became in the city, fearful and watchful, when suddenly the one who had sought his help the day before was crying out to him again. Moses said to him, “You are clearly a troublemaker.”
But when he was about to seize the one who was an enemy to them both, the man said, “O Moses, do you want to kill me as you killed a man yesterday? You only want to be a tyrant in the land, and you do not want to be among those who set things right.”
A man came running from the farthest end of the city. He said, “O Moses, the chiefs are conspiring against you to kill you, so leave! I am truly one who advises you sincerely.”
So he left it, fearful and watchful. He said, “My Lord, save me from the wrongdoing people.”
When he set out toward Midian, he said, “Perhaps my Lord will guide me to the right path.”
When he arrived at the waters of Midian, he found a crowd of people watering their flocks, and he found apart from them two women holding back their flock. He said, “What is the matter with you two?” They said, “We cannot water until the shepherds move away, and our father is a very old man.”
So he watered their flock for them, then withdrew to the shade and said, “My Lord, I am truly in need of whatever good You send down to me.”
Then one of the two women came to him, walking shyly. She said, “My father invites you so he may reward you for watering our flock for us.” When he came to him and told him his story, he said, “Do not be afraid. You have escaped from the wrongdoing people.”
One of the two women said, “O my father, hire him. The best man you can hire is the strong and trustworthy.”
He said, “I wish to marry one of these two daughters of mine to you, on the condition that you serve me for eight years. If you complete ten, that is from you, and I do not wish to make it hard for you. You will find me, God willing, among the righteous.”
He said, “That is settled between me and you. Whichever of the two terms I fulfill, there will be no grievance against me. And God is trustee over what we say.”
When Moses had fulfilled the term and set out with his family, he spotted a fire on the side of the mountain. He said to his family, “Stay here. I have spotted a fire. Perhaps I can bring you back some news from it, or a burning brand, so that you may warm yourselves.”
When he came to it, he was called from the right bank of the valley, in the blessed spot, from the tree, “O Moses, truly I am God, Lord of all worlds.”
“Cast down your staff.” But when he saw it writhing as if it were a serpent, he turned fleeing and did not look back. “O Moses, come forward and do not be afraid. You are among the safe.”
“Slip your hand into your garment—it will come out white, without blemish. And draw your arm close to yourself against fear. These two are proofs from your Lord to Pharaoh and his chiefs. They were a defiantly sinful people.”
He said, “My Lord, I killed a man among them, and I fear they will kill me.
And my brother Aaron is more eloquent than me in speech, so send him with me as a supporter to confirm me. I fear they will deny me.”
He said, “We will strengthen your arm through your brother and grant you both authority, so they will not reach you. Through Our signs, you and whoever follows you will be the victors.”
But when Moses came to them with Our clear miracles, they said, “This is nothing but fabricated sorcery. We never heard of this among our forefathers.”
Moses said, “My Lord knows best who has brought guidance from Him and who will have the ultimate home. Surely the wrongdoers will not succeed.”
Pharaoh said, “O chiefs, I know of no god for you other than myself. So kindle for me, O Haman, upon the clay, and build me a tower, that I may look upon Moses’s god. I certainly think he is one of the liars.”
He and his soldiers grew arrogant in the land without right, and they thought they would never be returned to Us.
So We seized him and his soldiers and hurled them into the sea. See how the wrongdoers met their end!
We made them leaders calling to the Fire, and on the Day of Resurrection they will not be helped.
We made a curse follow them in this world, and on the Day of Resurrection they will be among the despised.
Truly We gave Moses the Book after We had destroyed the earlier generations—insights for people, and guidance, and mercy, so that they might remember.
You were not on the western side when We decreed the matter to Moses, nor were you among the witnesses.
But We raised generations, and long ages passed over them. You were not dwelling among the people of Midian, reciting Our verses to them, but it is We who were sending messengers.
You were not at the side of the Mount when We called out, but it is a mercy from your Lord so that you may warn a people to whom no warner came before you, so that they might remember.
Were it not that a disaster might strike them for what their hands have sent ahead, and they would say, “Our Lord, if only You had sent us a messenger so we could follow Your verses and be among the believers.”
Yet when the truth came to them from Us, they said, “Why was he not given the like of what Moses was given?” Did they not reject what Moses was given before? They said, “Two works of sorcery supporting each other,” and they said, “We reject them all.”
Say, “Then bring a book from God that is better in guidance than these two, and I will follow it—if you are truthful.”
If they do not respond to you, then know that they only follow their desires. And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from God? Truly God does not guide the wrongdoing people.
Certainly We have conveyed the Word to them in succession, so that they might remember.
Those to whom We gave the Book before it—they believe in it.
When it is recited to them, they say, “We believe in it. It is the truth from our Lord. Even before it, we were submitters.”
Those will be given their reward twice for their patience, and they repel evil with good, and they spend from what We have provided them.
When they hear idle talk, they turn away from it and say, “To us our deeds, and to you your deeds. Peace be upon you. We do not seek the ignorant.”
You do not guide whom you love, but God guides whom He wills. He knows best the rightly guided.
They said, “If we follow the guidance with you, we will be snatched from our land.” Have We not established for them a secure sanctuary to which the fruits of all things are brought as provision from Us? But most of them do not know.
How many a town We destroyed that was insolent in its livelihood! There are their dwellings, barely inhabited after them. It is We who were the inheritors.
Your Lord would never destroy the towns until He had sent to their capital a messenger reciting Our verses to them. And We would never destroy the towns unless their people were wrongdoers.
Whatever you have been given is only the enjoyment of worldly life and its adornment. What is with God is better and more lasting. Will you not reason?
Is the one We promised a good promise, which he will meet, like the one We gave the enjoyment of this worldly life, then on the Day of Resurrection he will be among those brought forward?
On the Day He calls to them and says, “Where are My partners that you used to claim?”
Those against whom the word has come due will say, “Our Lord, these are the ones we led astray. We led them astray as we ourselves went astray. We disown them before You. It was not us they worshipped.”
They will be told, “Call upon your partners.” So they will call upon them, but they will not answer them, and they will see the punishment. If only they had been guided.
On the Day He calls to them and says, “What did you answer the messengers?”
All answers will be obscured from them that Day, and they will not question one another.
But as for the one who repented, believed, and did good, he may well be among the successful.
Your Lord creates what He wills and chooses. They have no choice. Glory be to God, and exalted is He above what they associate with Him.
Your Lord knows what their hearts conceal and what they reveal.
He is God—there is no god but Him. To Him belongs all praise in the first life and the last. His is the judgment, and to Him you will be returned.
Say, “Have you considered: if God made the night perpetual over you until the Day of Resurrection, what god other than God could bring you light? Will you not listen?”
Say, “Have you considered: if God made the day perpetual over you until the Day of Resurrection, what god other than God could bring you a night in which to rest? Will you not see?”
Out of His mercy He made for you the night and the day, so that you may rest in it and seek of His bounty, and so that you may be grateful.
On the Day He calls to them and says, “Where are My partners that you used to claim?”
We will draw from every nation a witness and say, “Produce your proof.” Then they will know that the truth belongs to God, and all they used to fabricate will vanish from them.
Korah was from Moses’s people, but he oppressed them. We gave him such treasures that their very keys would weigh down a band of strong men. When his people said to him, “Do not gloat. Surely God does not love those who gloat.
Seek, through what God has given you, the Home of the Hereafter, and do not forget your share of this world. Do good as God has done good to you, and do not seek corruption in the land. Truly God does not love the corrupters.”
He said, “I was only given this because of knowledge I possess.” Did he not know that God had destroyed before him generations who were mightier than him in strength and greater in accumulation? The guilty are not even asked about their sins.
So he came out before his people in his splendor. Those who desired the life of this world said, “If only we had the like of what Korah has been given! He truly is a man of great fortune.”
But those who had been given knowledge said, “Woe to you! God’s reward is better for whoever believes and does good, and none receive it except the patient.”
So We caused the earth to swallow him and his home. He had no group to help him against God, nor could he help himself.
Those who had wished for his position the day before began saying, “Ah! God extends provision to whomever He wills among His servants and restricts it. Had God not been gracious to us, He would have caused the earth to swallow us. Ah! The disbelievers never succeed.”
That Home of the Hereafter — We assign it to those who desire neither dominance in the land nor corruption. The outcome belongs to the righteous.
Whoever brings a good deed will have something better than it, and whoever brings an evil deed — those who did evil will only be repaid for what they used to do.
Certainly He who ordained the Quran upon you will return you to a place of return. Say, “My Lord knows best who has brought guidance and who is in clear error.”
You never expected the Book to be cast upon you — it was only a mercy from your Lord. So never be a supporter of the disbelievers.
Let them not turn you away from God’s verses after they have been sent down to you. Call to your Lord, and never be among those who associate partners with God.
Do not call upon another god alongside God. There is no god but Him. Everything will perish except His face. His is the judgment, and to Him you will be returned.
