Sad. By the Quran, full of remembrance.
In the name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.
Sad. By the Quran, full of remembrance.
But those who disbelieve are steeped in arrogance and opposition.
How many a generation We destroyed before them! They cried out, but it was too late to escape.
They were astonished that a warner came to them from among themselves, and the disbelievers said, “This is a sorcerer, a liar.
Has he made the gods into one God? Truly, this is an astonishing thing!”
The chiefs among them went off saying, “Walk away and hold firm to your gods. This is certainly something intended.
We never heard of this in the last religion. This is nothing but a fabrication.
Was the reminder sent down to him alone out of all of us?” Rather, they are in doubt about My reminder. Rather, they have not yet tasted My punishment.
Or do they possess the treasuries of your Lord’s mercy, the Almighty, the Ever-Giving?
Or do they have the dominion of the heavens and the earth and everything between them? Then let them climb the pathways.
A defeated host they are there, among the factions.
Before them, the people of Noah denied, and Aad, and Pharaoh of the stakes.
And Thamud, and the people of Lot, and the companions of the Thicket. Those were the factions.
Every one of them denied the messengers, so My punishment was justified.
These await nothing but a single blast with no pause.
They said, “Our Lord, hasten for us our share before the Day of Reckoning.”
Be patient over what they say, and remember Our servant David, the one of strength. Truly, he was ever turning back.
We subjected the mountains to glorify with him at evening and sunrise.
And the birds, gathered — all turning back to him.
We strengthened his kingdom and gave him wisdom and decisive speech.
Has the account of the disputants reached you, when they scaled the sanctuary?
When they entered upon David and he was alarmed by them, they said, “Do not fear. We are two disputants — one of us has wronged the other. So judge between us in truth and do not be unjust, and guide us to the right path.”
“This is my brother. He has ninety-nine ewes, and I have one ewe. He said, ‘Entrust her to me,’ and he overpowered me in argument.”
He said, “He has certainly wronged you by asking for your ewe to add to his ewes. Surely many partners wrong one another — except those who believe and do righteous deeds, and how few they are.” And David realized that We had tested him, so he asked his Lord for forgiveness and fell down bowing and turned back in repentance.
So We forgave him that. Certainly, he has nearness to Us and a beautiful return.
O David, We have made you a successor on the earth, so judge between people in truth and do not follow desire, lest it lead you astray from God’s path. Those who stray from God’s path — for them is a severe punishment because they forgot the Day of Reckoning.
We did not create the heaven and the earth and what is between them in vain. That is the assumption of those who disbelieve. So woe to those who disbelieve from the Fire.
Or should We treat those who believe and do righteous deeds like the corrupters on earth? Or should We treat the God-conscious like the wicked?
A blessed Book We have sent down to you, so that they may reflect upon its verses and so that people of understanding may be reminded.
We granted David Solomon. What an excellent servant — he was ever turning back to God.
When the fine, standing steeds were paraded before him in the evening.
He said, “I have loved the love of good things over the remembrance of my Lord, until it disappeared behind the veil.
Bring them back to me.” Then he began stroking their legs and necks.
Certainly We tested Solomon and cast upon his throne a lifeless body, then he turned back.
He said, “My Lord, forgive me and grant me a kingdom that will not belong to anyone after me. Truly, You are the Bestower.”
So We subjected the wind to him, blowing gently by his command wherever he directed.
And the devils — every builder and diver.
And others bound together in chains.
“This is Our gift, so give freely or withhold, without account.”
Truly, he has nearness to Us and a beautiful return.
And remember Our servant Job, when he called out to his Lord, “Satan has afflicted me with hardship and suffering.”
“Strike the ground with your foot — here is a cool wash and a drink.”
We restored his family to him, and the like of them with them, as a mercy from Us and a reminder for people of understanding.
“Take in your hand a bundle of grass and strike with it, and do not break your oath.” We found him patient. What an excellent servant — he was ever turning back to God.
And remember Our servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob — possessors of strength and vision.
We purified them with a pure quality: remembrance of the Hereafter.
They are, in Our sight, truly among the chosen, the finest.
And remember Ishmael, Elisha, and Dhul-Kifl — each was among the finest.
This is a reminder. And surely the reverent will have a beautiful return.
Gardens of eternity, their gates flung open to them.
Reclining therein, calling for abundant fruit and drink.
And beside them, companions of modest gaze, all of equal age.
This is what you are promised for the Day of Reckoning.
Surely this is Our provision, never to be exhausted.
So it is. But the transgressors will have the worst return.
Hell, where they will burn. What a wretched resting place!
This — let them taste it: scalding water and foul discharge.
And other torments of its kind, in pairs.
“Here is a crowd plunging in with you. No welcome for them — they will burn in the Fire.”
They said, “No, it is you who deserve no welcome. You brought this upon us. What a wretched abode!”
They said, “Our Lord, whoever brought this upon us — double his punishment in the Fire.”
And they said, “Why do we not see men we used to count among the wicked?
Did we take them in mockery, or have our eyes missed them?”
Surely that is true — the quarreling of the people of the Fire.
Say, “I am only a warner, and there is no god but God, the One, the Vanquisher.
Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, the All-Mighty, the Ever-Forgiving.”
Say, “It is a mighty tiding.
From which you turn away.
I had no knowledge of the highest assembly when they disputed.
It is only revealed to me that I am a clear warner.”
When your Lord said to the angels, “I am creating a human being from clay.
So when I have shaped him and breathed into him of My spirit, fall down before him in prostration.”
So the angels prostrated, all of them together.
Except Iblis. He was arrogant and was among the disbelievers.
He said, “O Iblis, what prevented you from prostrating to what I created with My own hands? Were you arrogant, or are you among the exalted?”
He said, “I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay.”
He said, “Then get out of it, for you are accursed.
And upon you is My curse until the Day of Judgment.”
He said, “My Lord, then grant me respite until the Day they are resurrected.”
He said, “You are among those granted respite.
Until the Day of the appointed time.”
He said, “Then by Your might, I will surely lead them all astray.
Except Your servants among them, the sincere ones.”
He said, “The truth it is, and the truth I speak.
I will surely fill Hell with you and with whoever follows you among them, all together.”
Say, “I ask you no payment for it, and I am not one of the pretenders.
It is nothing but a reminder to all the worlds.
And you will surely know its tiding after a time.”
