The Spreaders · adh-Dhariyat · سورة الذاريات · 60 ayahs

In the name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.

By the scattering winds, scattering.

Then the burden-bearers, bearing loads.

Then the gliders, gliding with ease.

Then the distributors of the matter.

Truly what you are promised is sure.

And the Judgment will certainly come to pass.

By the sky full of pathways.

You are in conflicting speech.

Turned away from it is whoever was turned away.

Destroyed be the speculators.

Those who are drowning in heedlessness.

They ask, “When is the Day of Judgment?”

The Day they are tormented over the Fire.

“Taste your torment. This is what you used to hasten.”

The reverent are in gardens and springs.

Receiving what their Lord has given them. They were, before that, doers of good.

Little of the night did they sleep.

And in the hours before dawn they would seek forgiveness.

And in their wealth was a rightful share for the beggar and the deprived.

And in the earth are signs for those of certainty.

And in yourselves. Do you not see?

And in the sky is your provision and what you are promised.

So by the Lord of the sky and the earth, it is as true as the fact that you speak.

Has the story of Abraham’s honored guests reached you?

When they entered upon him and said, “Peace.” He said, “Peace — unfamiliar people.”

Then he slipped away to his family and came back with a fattened calf.

He set it before them and said, “Will you not eat?”

Then he felt a fear of them. They said, “Do not be afraid,” and they gave him glad tidings of a knowledgeable son.

Then his wife came forward with a cry, struck her face, and said, “A barren old woman!”

They said, “So has your Lord spoken. He is the All-Wise, the All-Knowing.”

He said, “What is your mission, O messengers?”

They said, “We have been sent to a criminal people.

To rain upon them stones of clay.

Marked by your Lord for the transgressors.”

So We brought out whoever was in it of the believers.

But We found in it only one household of those who had submitted.

And We left in it a sign for those who fear the painful punishment.

And in Moses, when We sent him to Pharaoh with clear authority.

But he turned away with his might and said, “A sorcerer or a madman!”

So We seized him and his soldiers and cast them into the sea, and he was blameworthy.

And in Aad, when We sent against them the barren wind.

It left nothing it came upon without turning it to dust.

And in Thamud, when they were told, “Enjoy yourselves for a while.”

But they defied their Lord’s command, so the thunderbolt seized them while they looked on.

They could not stand, nor could they defend themselves.

And the people of Noah before them — truly they were a defiantly disobedient people.

And the sky — We built it with might, and We are surely expanding it.

And the earth — We spread it out, and how excellent a spreader We are.

And of everything We created two kinds, so that you might reflect.

So flee to God. I am a clear warner to you from Him.

And do not set up another god alongside God. I am a clear warner to you from Him.

Likewise, no messenger came to those before them without them saying, “A sorcerer or a madman!”

Did they pass this down to one another? No, they are a transgressing people.

So turn away from them, for you are not to blame.

But remind, for truly the reminder benefits the believers.

I did not create the jinn and humankind except to worship Me.

I do not want any provision from them, nor do I want them to feed Me.

Truly God — He is the All-Providing, the Possessor of Strength, the Unshakable.

So those who have wronged will have a share of punishment like the share of their companions, so let them not rush Me.

Woe to those who disbelieved, on that Day of theirs which they are promised!
