إِذَا وَقَعَتِ الْوَاقِعَةُ
When the Inevitable Event occurs.
The Inevitable · al-Waqi'ah · سورة الواقعة · 96 ayahs
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
In the name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.
لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ
None can deny its occurrence.
خَافِضَةٌ رَافِعَةٌ
Bringing low, raising high.
إِذَا رُجَّتِ الْأَرْضُ رَجًّا
When the earth is shaken violently.
وَبُسَّتِ الْجِبَالُ بَسًّا
And the mountains are crushed to pieces.
فَكَانَتْ هَبَاءً مُنْبَثًّا
And become scattered dust.
وَكُنْتُمْ أَزْوَاجًا ثَلَاثَةً
And you are sorted into three groups.
فَأَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ
The People of the Right—what are the People of the Right?
وَأَصْحَابُ الْمَشْأَمَةِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الْمَشْأَمَةِ
The People of the Left—what are the People of the Left?
وَالسَّابِقُونَ السَّابِقُونَ
And the forerunners, the forerunners.
أُولَٰئِكَ الْمُقَرَّبُونَ
Those are the ones brought near.
فِي جَنَّاتِ النَّعِيمِ
In Gardens of Bliss.
ثُلَّةٌ مِنَ الْأَوَّلِينَ
A multitude from the earlier generations.
وَقَلِيلٌ مِنَ الْآخِرِينَ
And a few from the later ones.
عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مَوْضُونَةٍ
On woven couches.
مُتَّكِئِينَ عَلَيْهَا مُتَقَابِلِينَ
Reclining on them, facing one another.
يَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ وِلْدَانٌ مُخَلَّدُونَ
Eternal youths circulate among them.
بِأَكْوَابٍ وَأَبَارِيقَ وَكَأْسٍ مِنْ مَعِينٍ
With cups, pitchers, and a goblet of flowing wine.
لَا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنْهَا وَلَا يُنْزِفُونَ
No headache from it, nor are they intoxicated.
وَفَاكِهَةٍ مِمَّا يَتَخَيَّرُونَ
And fruit of their choosing.
وَلَحْمِ طَيْرٍ مِمَّا يَشْتَهُونَ
And bird meat of whatever they desire.
وَحُورٌ عِينٌ
And fair women with large eyes.
كَأَمْثَالِ اللُّؤْلُؤِ الْمَكْنُونِ
Like hidden pearls.
جَزَاءً بِمَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ
As recompense for what they used to do.
لَا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلَا تَأْثِيمًا
They hear no idle talk therein, nor any sinful speech.
إِلَّا قِيلًا سَلَامًا سَلَامًا
Only the saying, “Peace, peace.”
وَأَصْحَابُ الْيَمِينِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الْيَمِينِ
And the People of the Right—what are the People of the Right?
فِي سِدْرٍ مَخْضُودٍ
Among thornless lote trees.
وَطَلْحٍ مَنْضُودٍ
And clustered acacias.
وَظِلٍّ مَمْدُودٍ
And extended shade.
وَمَاءٍ مَسْكُوبٍ
And flowing water.
وَفَاكِهَةٍ كَثِيرَةٍ
And abundant fruit.
لَا مَقْطُوعَةٍ وَلَا مَمْنُوعَةٍ
Neither cut off nor forbidden.
وَفُرُشٍ مَرْفُوعَةٍ
And raised couches.
إِنَّا أَنْشَأْنَاهُنَّ إِنْشَاءً
Truly We created them anew.
فَجَعَلْنَاهُنَّ أَبْكَارًا
And made them virgins.
عُرُبًا أَتْرَابًا
Loving, of equal age.
لِأَصْحَابِ الْيَمِينِ
For the People of the Right.
ثُلَّةٌ مِنَ الْأَوَّلِينَ
A multitude from the earlier generations.
وَثُلَّةٌ مِنَ الْآخِرِينَ
And a multitude from the later ones.
وَأَصْحَابُ الشِّمَالِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الشِّمَالِ
And the People of the Left—what are the People of the Left?
فِي سَمُومٍ وَحَمِيمٍ
In scorching wind and scalding water.
وَظِلٍّ مِنْ يَحْمُومٍ
And shade of black smoke.
لَا بَارِدٍ وَلَا كَرِيمٍ
Neither cool nor refreshing.
إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ
They had been, before that, living in luxury.
وَكَانُوا يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى الْحِنْثِ الْعَظِيمِ
And they persisted in the great sin.
وَكَانُوا يَقُولُونَ أَئِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَامًا أَإِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ
And they used to say, “When we have died and become dust and bones, will we really be resurrected?
أَوَآبَاؤُنَا الْأَوَّلُونَ
And our ancient forefathers too?”
قُلْ إِنَّ الْأَوَّلِينَ وَالْآخِرِينَ
Say, “Surely the earlier and the later generations.
لَمَجْمُوعُونَ إِلَىٰ مِيقَاتِ يَوْمٍ مَعْلُومٍ
Will all be gathered for the appointment of a known Day.”
ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ أَيُّهَا الضَّالُّونَ الْمُكَذِّبُونَ
Then you, O misguided deniers.
لَآكِلُونَ مِنْ شَجَرٍ مِنْ زَقُّومٍ
Will eat from the tree of Zaqqum.
فَمَالِئُونَ مِنْهَا الْبُطُونَ
Filling your bellies with it.
فَشَارِبُونَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الْحَمِيمِ
Then drinking scalding water on top of it.
فَشَارِبُونَ شُرْبَ الْهِيمِ
Drinking like thirst-crazed camels.
هَٰذَا نُزُلُهُمْ يَوْمَ الدِّينِ
This is their welcome on the Day of Judgment.
نَحْنُ خَلَقْنَاكُمْ فَلَوْلَا تُصَدِّقُونَ
We created you, so why do you not believe?
أَفَرَأَيْتُمْ مَا تُمْنُونَ
Have you considered what you ejaculate?
أَأَنْتُمْ تَخْلُقُونَهُ أَمْ نَحْنُ الْخَالِقُونَ
Is it you who create it, or are We the Creators?
نَحْنُ قَدَّرْنَا بَيْنَكُمُ الْمَوْتَ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ
We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outrun.
عَلَىٰ أَنْ نُبَدِّلَ أَمْثَالَكُمْ وَنُنْشِئَكُمْ فِي مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ
From replacing you with your likes and producing you in what you do not know.
وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ النَّشْأَةَ الْأُولَىٰ فَلَوْلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ
You already know the first creation, so why do you not remember?
أَفَرَأَيْتُمْ مَا تَحْرُثُونَ
Have you considered what you sow?
أَأَنْتُمْ تَزْرَعُونَهُ أَمْ نَحْنُ الزَّارِعُونَ
Is it you who make it grow, or are We the Growers?
لَوْ نَشَاءُ لَجَعَلْنَاهُ حُطَامًا فَظَلْتُمْ تَفَكَّهُونَ
If We willed, We could turn it into debris, and you would be left lamenting.
إِنَّا لَمُغْرَمُونَ
“Surely we are ruined!
بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ
No, we are deprived!”
أَفَرَأَيْتُمُ الْمَاءَ الَّذِي تَشْرَبُونَ
Have you considered the water you drink?
أَأَنْتُمْ أَنْزَلْتُمُوهُ مِنَ الْمُزْنِ أَمْ نَحْنُ الْمُنْزِلُونَ
Is it you who sent it down from the clouds, or are We the Senders?
لَوْ نَشَاءُ جَعَلْنَاهُ أُجَاجًا فَلَوْلَا تَشْكُرُونَ
If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful?
أَفَرَأَيْتُمُ النَّارَ الَّتِي تُورُونَ
Have you considered the fire you kindle?
أَأَنْتُمْ أَنْشَأْتُمْ شَجَرَتَهَا أَمْ نَحْنُ الْمُنْشِئُونَ
Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the Producers?
نَحْنُ جَعَلْنَاهَا تَذْكِرَةً وَمَتَاعًا لِلْمُقْوِينَ
We made it a reminder and a provision for the travelers.
فَسَبِّحْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الْعَظِيمِ
So glorify the name of your Lord, the Magnificent.
فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِمَوَاقِعِ النُّجُومِ
I swear by the positions of the stars.
وَإِنَّهُ لَقَسَمٌ لَوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ
And truly it is a mighty oath, if only you knew.
إِنَّهُ لَقُرْآنٌ كَرِيمٌ
It is surely a noble Quran.
فِي كِتَابٍ مَكْنُونٍ
In a protected Book.
لَا يَمَسُّهُ إِلَّا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ
None touch it but the purified.
تَنْزِيلٌ مِنْ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
A revelation from the Lord of all worlds.
أَفَبِهَٰذَا الْحَدِيثِ أَنْتُمْ مُدْهِنُونَ
Is it this discourse you take lightly?
وَتَجْعَلُونَ رِزْقَكُمْ أَنَّكُمْ تُكَذِّبُونَ
And you make your provision denial?
فَلَوْلَا إِذَا بَلَغَتِ الْحُلْقُومَ
So why, when the soul reaches the throat.
وَأَنْتُمْ حِينَئِذٍ تَنْظُرُونَ
And you are at that moment looking on.
وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنْكُمْ وَلَٰكِنْ لَا تُبْصِرُونَ
And We are nearer to him than you, but you do not see.
فَلَوْلَا إِنْ كُنْتُمْ غَيْرَ مَدِينِينَ
So why, if you are not subject to judgment.
تَرْجِعُونَهَا إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ
Do you not bring it back, if you are truthful?
فَأَمَّا إِنْ كَانَ مِنَ الْمُقَرَّبِينَ
As for him, if he is among those brought near.
فَرَوْحٌ وَرَيْحَانٌ وَجَنَّتُ نَعِيمٍ
Then comfort, fragrance, and a Garden of Bliss.
وَأَمَّا إِنْ كَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ الْيَمِينِ
And if he is among the people of the right.
فَسَلَامٌ لَكَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ الْيَمِينِ
Then peace to you, from the people of the right.
وَأَمَّا إِنْ كَانَ مِنَ الْمُكَذِّبِينَ الضَّالِّينَ
But if he is among the deniers, the astray.
فَنُزُلٌ مِنْ حَمِيمٍ
Then a welcome of scalding water.
وَتَصْلِيَةُ جَحِيمٍ
And burning in Hellfire.
إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ الْيَقِينِ
Truly this is the certain truth.
فَسَبِّحْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الْعَظِيمِ
So glorify the name of your Lord, the Magnificent.
