١ن ۚ وَالْقَلَمِ وَمَا يَسْطُرُونَ

1Nun. By the pen and what they inscribe.

٢مَا أَنْتَ بِنِعْمَةِ رَبِّكَ بِمَجْنُونٍ

2You are not, by your Lord’s grace, a madman.

٣وَإِنَّ لَكَ لَأَجْرًا غَيْرَ مَمْنُونٍ

3Truly, for you is a reward unending.

٤وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ

4And you are certainly of a magnificent character.

٥فَسَتُبْصِرُ وَيُبْصِرُونَ

5So you will see, and they will see.

٦بِأَيْيِكُمُ الْمَفْتُونُ

6Which of you is the afflicted one.

٧إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنْ ضَلَّ عَنْ سَبِيلِهِ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِالْمُهْتَدِينَ

7Your Lord knows best who has strayed from His path, and He knows best the guided.

٨فَلَا تُطِعِ الْمُكَذِّبِينَ

8So do not obey the deniers.

٩وَدُّوا لَوْ تُدْهِنُ فَيُدْهِنُونَ

9They wish you would compromise, so they could compromise.

١٠وَلَا تُطِعْ كُلَّ حَلَّافٍ مَهِينٍ

10And do not obey every habitual swearer, contemptible.

١١هَمَّازٍ مَشَّاءٍ بِنَمِيمٍ

11Slanderer, going about with gossip.

١٢مَنَّاعٍ لِلْخَيْرِ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ

12Withholder of good, transgressor, sinful.

١٣عُتُلٍّ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ زَنِيمٍ

13Brutal, and on top of all that, illegitimate.

١٤أَنْ كَانَ ذَا مَالٍ وَبَنِينَ

14Just because he has wealth and sons.

١٥إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ آيَاتُنَا قَالَ أَسَاطِيرُ الْأَوَّلِينَ

15When Our verses are recited to him, he says, “Legends of the ancients!”

١٦سَنَسِمُهُ عَلَى الْخُرْطُومِ

16We will brand him on the snout.

١٧إِنَّا بَلَوْنَاهُمْ كَمَا بَلَوْنَا أَصْحَابَ الْجَنَّةِ إِذْ أَقْسَمُوا لَيَصْرِمُنَّهَا مُصْبِحِينَ

17We have tested them as We tested the owners of the garden, when they swore they would harvest it at dawn.

١٨وَلَا يَسْتَثْنُونَ

18Making no exception.

١٩فَطَافَ عَلَيْهَا طَائِفٌ مِنْ رَبِّكَ وَهُمْ نَائِمُونَ

19So a calamity from your Lord swept over it while they slept.

٢٠فَأَصْبَحَتْ كَالصَّرِيمِ

20And by morning it was as if stripped bare.

٢١فَتَنَادَوْا مُصْبِحِينَ

21They called out to one another at dawn.

٢٢أَنِ اغْدُوا عَلَىٰ حَرْثِكُمْ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَارِمِينَ

22“Go early to your crop if you would harvest it.”

٢٣فَانْطَلَقُوا وَهُمْ يَتَخَافَتُونَ

23So they set off, whispering to one another.

٢٤أَنْ لَا يَدْخُلَنَّهَا الْيَوْمَ عَلَيْكُمْ مِسْكِينٌ

24“No poor person must enter it today against you.”

٢٥وَغَدَوْا عَلَىٰ حَرْدٍ قَادِرِينَ

25And they went early, determined and able.

٢٦فَلَمَّا رَأَوْهَا قَالُوا إِنَّا لَضَالُّونَ

26But when they saw it, they said, “We are surely lost!

٢٧بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ

27No—we are deprived!”

٢٨قَالَ أَوْسَطُهُمْ أَلَمْ أَقُلْ لَكُمْ لَوْلَا تُسَبِّحُونَ

28The most moderate among them said, “Did I not tell you, why do you not glorify God?”

٢٩قَالُوا سُبْحَانَ رَبِّنَا إِنَّا كُنَّا ظَالِمِينَ

29They said, “Glory be to our Lord! We were truly wrongdoers.”

٣٠فَأَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ يَتَلَاوَمُونَ

30Then they turned on one another, blaming each other.

٣١قَالُوا يَا وَيْلَنَا إِنَّا كُنَّا طَاغِينَ

31They said, “Woe to us! We were truly transgressors.

٣٢عَسَىٰ رَبُّنَا أَنْ يُبْدِلَنَا خَيْرًا مِنْهَا إِنَّا إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا رَاغِبُونَ

32Perhaps our Lord will give us something better in its place. To our Lord we turn in hope.”

٣٣كَذَٰلِكَ الْعَذَابُ ۖ وَلَعَذَابُ الْآخِرَةِ أَكْبَرُ ۚ لَوْ كَانُوا يَعْلَمُونَ

33Such is the punishment. And the punishment of the Hereafter is far greater, if only they knew.

٣٤إِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِمْ جَنَّاتِ النَّعِيمِ

34Surely for the reverent, with their Lord, are Gardens of Bliss.

٣٥أَفَنَجْعَلُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ كَالْمُجْرِمِينَ

35Should We then treat those who submit like the criminals?

٣٦مَا لَكُمْ كَيْفَ تَحْكُمُونَ

36What is wrong with you? How do you judge?

٣٧أَمْ لَكُمْ كِتَابٌ فِيهِ تَدْرُسُونَ

37Or do you have a scripture in which you study.

٣٨إِنَّ لَكُمْ فِيهِ لَمَا تَخَيَّرُونَ

38That you will have in it whatever you choose?

٣٩أَمْ لَكُمْ أَيْمَانٌ عَلَيْنَا بَالِغَةٌ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ ۙ إِنَّ لَكُمْ لَمَا تَحْكُمُونَ

39Or do you have oaths binding upon Us, lasting until the Day of Resurrection, that you will have whatever you decree?

٤٠سَلْهُمْ أَيُّهُمْ بِذَٰلِكَ زَعِيمٌ

40Ask them which of them will vouch for that.

٤١أَمْ لَهُمْ شُرَكَاءُ فَلْيَأْتُوا بِشُرَكَائِهِمْ إِنْ كَانُوا صَادِقِينَ

41Or do they have partners? Then let them bring their partners, if they are truthful.

٤٢يَوْمَ يُكْشَفُ عَنْ سَاقٍ وَيُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى السُّجُودِ فَلَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ

42On the Day when the shin is bared and they are called to prostrate, but they will not be able.

٤٣خَاشِعَةً أَبْصَارُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌ ۖ وَقَدْ كَانُوا يُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى السُّجُودِ وَهُمْ سَالِمُونَ

43Their eyes humbled, humiliation covering them. They used to be called to prostrate when they were sound.

٤٤فَذَرْنِي وَمَنْ يُكَذِّبُ بِهَٰذَا الْحَدِيثِ ۖ سَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُمْ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ

44So leave Me with whoever denies this message. We will lead them step by step from where they do not know.

٤٥وَأُمْلِي لَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ كَيْدِي مَتِينٌ

45And I will give them time. Surely My plan is firm.

٤٦أَمْ تَسْأَلُهُمْ أَجْرًا فَهُمْ مِنْ مَغْرَمٍ مُثْقَلُونَ

46Or do you ask them for a payment, so they are burdened with debt?

٤٧أَمْ عِنْدَهُمُ الْغَيْبُ فَهُمْ يَكْتُبُونَ

47Or do they have the unseen, so they write it down?

٤٨فَاصْبِرْ لِحُكْمِ رَبِّكَ وَلَا تَكُنْ كَصَاحِبِ الْحُوتِ إِذْ نَادَىٰ وَهُوَ مَكْظُومٌ

48So be patient for your Lord’s judgment, and do not be like the companion of the whale, when he called out in anguish.

٤٩لَوْلَا أَنْ تَدَارَكَهُ نِعْمَةٌ مِنْ رَبِّهِ لَنُبِذَ بِالْعَرَاءِ وَهُوَ مَذْمُومٌ

49Had a blessing from his Lord not reached him, he would have been cast onto the barren shore, disgraced.

٥٠فَاجْتَبَاهُ رَبُّهُ فَجَعَلَهُ مِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ

50But his Lord chose him and made him one of the righteous.

٥١وَإِنْ يَكَادُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لَيُزْلِقُونَكَ بِأَبْصَارِهِمْ لَمَّا سَمِعُوا الذِّكْرَ وَيَقُولُونَ إِنَّهُ لَمَجْنُونٌ

51The disbelievers nearly strike you down with their glares when they hear the Reminder, and they say, “He is surely a madman.”

٥٢وَمَا هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِلْعَالَمِينَ

52But it is nothing other than a reminder to all the worlds.
