A declaration of disavowal from God and His Messenger to those polytheists with whom you made treaties.

So travel freely through the land for four months, and know that you cannot escape God, and that God will disgrace the disbelievers.

And a proclamation from God and His Messenger to the people on the day of the greater pilgrimage: God is free of the polytheists, and so is His Messenger. If you repent, that is better for you, but if you turn away, then know that you cannot escape God. And give the disbelievers tidings of a painful punishment.

Except those polytheists with whom you made a treaty and who then did not fall short with you in anything and did not support anyone against you — fulfill their treaty to its full term. Truly, God loves the righteous.

When the sacred months have passed, kill the polytheists wherever you find them, seize them, besiege them, and lie in wait for them at every ambush point. But if they repent, establish prayer, and give charity, then let them go their way. Surely, God is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

If any of the polytheists seeks your protection, grant him protection so that he may hear God’s word, then escort him to his place of safety. That is because they are a people who do not know.

How can the polytheists have a treaty with God and with His Messenger? Except those with whom you made a treaty at the Sacred Mosque — so long as they are true to you, be true to them. Truly, God loves the righteous.

How? If they gain the upper hand over you, they respect neither kinship nor covenant with you. They please you with their mouths while their hearts refuse, and most of them are defiantly disobedient.

They sold God’s verses for a petty price and barred others from His path. Evil is what they used to do.

They respect neither kinship nor covenant with a believer. Those are the transgressors.

But if they repent, establish prayer, and give charity, then they are your brothers in faith. We detail the verses for people who know.

But if they break their oaths after their treaty and attack your religion, then fight the leaders of disbelief — they have no binding oaths — so that they may desist.

Will you not fight a people who broke their oaths, plotted to expel the Messenger, and were the ones who started against you first? Do you fear them? God is more deserving of your fear, if you are believers.

Fight them—God will punish them by your hands, disgrace them, grant you victory over them, and heal the chests of a believing people.

And remove the rage from their hearts. God turns in mercy to whom He wills. God is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

Or did you think you would be left alone without God has made evident those among you who strove and took no intimate ally besides God, His Messenger, and the believers? God is fully aware of what you do.

It is not for the polytheists to maintain God’s mosques while bearing witness against themselves of disbelief. Those—their deeds have come to nothing, and in the Fire they will remain forever.

Only those who believe in God and the Last Day, establish prayer, give charity, and fear none but God maintain God’s mosques. It is they who may be among the guided.

Do you equate giving water to pilgrims and maintaining the Sacred Mosque with one who believes in God and the Last Day and strives in God’s cause? They are not equal before God. God does not guide the wrongdoing people.

Those who believed, emigrated, and strove in God’s cause with their wealth and their lives hold a greater rank with God. It is they who are the triumphant.

Their Lord gives them glad tidings of mercy from Him, and approval, and gardens where lasting bliss awaits them.

They will dwell there forever. Truly, with God is a tremendous reward.

O you who believe, do not take your fathers and your brothers as allies if they prefer disbelief over faith. Whoever among you allies with them—it is they who are the wrongdoers.

Say, “If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your spouses, your clan, wealth you have acquired, trade you fear will decline, and homes you cherish are dearer to you than God, His Messenger, and striving in His cause, then wait until God brings His command.” God does not guide the corrupt people.

God has granted you victory in many battlefields, and on the day of Hunayn, when your great numbers impressed you, but they availed you nothing, and the earth, vast as it is, closed in on you, then you turned back in retreat.

Then God sent down His tranquility upon His messenger and upon the believers, and sent down forces you did not see, and punished those who disbelieved. That is the recompense of the disbelievers.

Then after that, God turns in mercy to whom He wills. And God is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

O you who believe, the polytheists are impure, so let them not approach the Sacred Mosque after this year of theirs. And if you fear poverty, God will enrich you from His bounty if He wills. Truly God is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

Fight those among the People of the Scripture who do not believe in God or the Last Day, who do not forbid what God and His messenger have forbidden, and who do not follow the religion of truth—until they pay the tribute out of hand while they are humbled.

The Jews said, “Ezra is the son of God,” and the Christians said, “The Messiah is the son of God.” That is what they say with their mouths, echoing the words of those who disbelieved before them. May God destroy them! How deluded they are!

They took their rabbis and their monks as lords besides God, and the Messiah son of Mary, though they were commanded only to worship one God. There is no god but Him. Glory be to Him, far above what they associate with Him.

They want to extinguish God’s light with their mouths, but God refuses anything except to perfect His light, even if the disbelievers despise it.

It is He who sent His messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to make it prevail over all religion, even if the polytheists despise it.

O you who believe, many of the rabbis and monks devour people’s wealth falsely and turn others from God’s path. Those who hoard gold and silver and do not spend it in God’s path—give them news of a painful punishment.

On the Day it will be heated in the fire of Hell and their foreheads, sides, and backs will be branded with it: “This is what you hoarded for yourselves, so taste what you used to hoard.”

The number of months with God is twelve months in God’s decree, since the day He created the heavens and the earth. Of these, four are sacred. That is the upright religion, so do not wrong yourselves during them. And fight the polytheists collectively as they fight you collectively. And know that God is with the God-conscious.

Postponing sacred months is only an increase in disbelief. Those who disbelieve are led astray by it—they permit it one year and forbid it another year to match the number God has made sacred, thus permitting what God has forbidden. The evil of their deeds has been made appealing to them. And God does not guide the disbelieving people.

O you who believe, what is wrong with you that when you are told, “March out in God’s cause,” you cling heavily to the earth? Are you content with the life of this world over the Hereafter? The enjoyment of this worldly life compared to the Hereafter is nothing but little.

If you do not march out, He will punish you with a painful punishment and replace you with another people, and you will not harm Him in the least. God is Capable of all things.

If you do not help him, God already helped him when those who disbelieved drove him out, the second of two, when they were in the cave, when he said to his companion, “Do not grieve; surely God is with us.” So God sent down His tranquility upon him and supported him with forces you did not see, and He made the word of those who disbelieved the lowest. And God’s word is the highest. God is All-Mighty, All-Wise.

March out, light or heavy, and strive with your wealth and your lives in God’s cause. That is better for you, if only you knew.

Had it been a near gain and an easy journey, they would have followed you, but the distance was too far for them. They will swear by God, “Had we been able, we would have gone out with you.” They destroy themselves, and God knows that they are truly liars.

God has pardoned you — why did you give them permission before it became clear to you who was truthful and you knew the liars?

Those who believe in God and the Last Day do not ask your permission to strive with their wealth and their lives. God is All-Knowing of the God-conscious.

Only those who do not believe in God and the Last Day ask your permission, and whose hearts are filled with doubt, so they waver in their doubt.

Had they intended to go out, they would have prepared for it. But God detested their departure, so He held them back, and they were told, “Stay behind with those who stay behind.”

Had they gone out among you, they would have added nothing to you but confusion, and they would have rushed about in your midst seeking to sow discord among you — and among you are those who would listen to them. God is All-Knowing of the wrongdoers.

They certainly sought discord before and turned matters over against you, until the truth came and God’s command prevailed, while they were averse.

Among them is he who says, “Give me leave and do not put me to trial.” Unquestionably, into trial they have already fallen! Surely Hell surrounds the disbelievers.

If good befalls you, it grieves them, and if calamity strikes you, they say, “We took our precaution beforehand,” and they turn away rejoicing.

Say, “Nothing will befall us except what God has decreed for us. He is our Protector.” And in God let the believers put their trust.

Say, “Are you waiting for anything to befall us except one of the two best outcomes? While we are waiting for God to strike you with punishment from Him or at our hands. So wait — we are waiting with you.”

Say, “Spend willingly or unwillingly — it will never be accepted from you. You have been a defiantly disobedient people.”

Nothing prevented their contributions from being accepted except that they disbelieved in God and His Messenger, they do not come to prayer except lazily, and they do not spend except reluctantly.

So let not their wealth or their children impress you. God only intends to punish them through these in the life of this world, and that their souls depart while they are disbelievers.

They swear by God that they are truly of you, but they are not of you — they are a people who are afraid.

If they could find a refuge, or caves, or any place to enter, they would turn to it, rushing headlong.

Among them are those who criticize you regarding the charitable donations. If they are given from them, they are pleased, but if they are not given from them, they are suddenly enraged.

If only they had been content with what God and His Messenger gave them and said, “God is enough for us. God will give us from His bounty, and so will His Messenger. To God we turn in hope.”

Charitable donations are only for the poor, the needy, those who administer them, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, for freeing slaves, for debtors, in God’s cause, and for the traveler — an obligation from God. God is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

Among them are those who hurt the Prophet and say, “He is all ears.” Say, “An ear of good for you — he believes in God and trusts the believers and is a mercy to those of you who believe.” Those who hurt God’s Messenger will have a painful punishment.

They swear by God to you to please you, but God and His Messenger are more deserving that they should please Him, if they are believers.

Do they not know that whoever opposes God and His Messenger — for him is the fire of Hell, abiding in it forever? That is the supreme disgrace.

The hypocrites fear that a chapter will be sent down against them, exposing what is in their hearts. Say, “Mock on — God will bring out what you fear.”

And if you ask them, they will surely say, “We were only chatting and playing.” Say, “Was it God and His verses and His Messenger you were mocking?”

Make no excuses — you have disbelieved after your belief. If We pardon a group among you, We will punish another group because they were criminals.

The hypocrite men and hypocrite women are all the same. They enjoin what is wrong and forbid what is right and clench their fists tight. They forgot God, so He forgot them. Truly, the hypocrites are the defiantly disobedient.

God has promised the hypocrite men and hypocrite women and the disbelievers the Fire of Hell, dwelling in it forever. It is enough for them. God has cursed them, and for them is a lasting punishment.

Like those before you — they were mightier than you in strength and more abundant in wealth and children. They enjoyed their share, and you have enjoyed your share just as those before you enjoyed theirs, and you indulged as they indulged. Those — their deeds have come to nothing in this world and the Hereafter, and those are the losers.

Has the news not reached them of those before them — the people of Noah, Ad, Thamud, the people of Abraham, the inhabitants of Midian, and the overturned cities? Their messengers came to them with clear proofs. God would never wrong them, but they wronged themselves.

The believing men and believing women are allies of one another. They enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, establish prayer, give charity, and obey God and His Messenger. Those — God will have mercy on them. Surely God is All-Mighty, All-Wise.

God has promised the believing men and believing women gardens beneath which rivers flow, dwelling in them forever, and fine dwellings in the Gardens of Eden. But pleasure from God is greater. That is the supreme triumph.

O Prophet, strive against the disbelievers and the hypocrites and be harsh with them. Their refuge is Hell — what a wretched destination!

They swear by God they said nothing, yet they certainly uttered the word of disbelief and disbelieved after their submission, and they plotted what they could not attain. They resented nothing except that God and His Messenger had enriched them from His bounty. If they repent, it will be better for them, but if they turn away, God will punish them with a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter, and they will have no ally or helper on earth.

Among them are those who made a covenant with God: “If He gives us from His bounty, we will surely give in charity and we will surely be among the righteous.”

But when He gave them from His bounty, they hoarded it and turned away in aversion.

So He made hypocrisy settle in their hearts until the Day they meet Him, because they broke their promise to God and because they used to lie.

Did they not know that God knows their secrets and their private conversations, and that God is the All-Knower of the unseen?

Those who mock the believers who give freely in charity and those who find nothing to give but their meager effort — they ridicule them. God ridicules them, and for them is a painful punishment.

Ask forgiveness for them or do not ask forgiveness for them — even if you ask forgiveness for them seventy times, God will never forgive them. That is because they disbelieved in God and His Messenger. God does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.

Those left behind rejoiced at staying back behind God’s Messenger, and they hated to strive with their wealth and their lives in God’s cause. They said, “Do not march out in the heat.” Say, “The fire of Hell is far more intense in heat.” If only they could understand.

Let them laugh a little and weep much — a recompense for what they used to earn.

If God returns you to a group of them and they ask your permission to go out, say, “You will never go out with me, and you will never fight an enemy alongside me. You were content to sit back the first time, so sit with those who stay behind.”

Never pray over any of them who dies, and never stand at his grave. They disbelieved in God and His Messenger and died as defiantly disobedient.

Let not their wealth and their children impress you. God only intends to punish them through these in this world, and that their souls depart while they are disbelievers.

When a chapter is sent down saying, “Believe in God and strive alongside His Messenger,” the affluent among them ask your leave and say, “Let us stay with those who sit behind.”

They were content to be with those who stay behind, and their hearts were sealed, so they do not understand.

But the Messenger and those who believed with him strove with their wealth and their lives. For them are all good things, and it is they who are the successful.

God has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow, dwelling therein forever. That is the supreme triumph.

The excuse-makers among the desert Arabs came seeking permission to stay behind, and those who lied to God and His Messenger sat idle. A painful punishment will strike those among them who disbelieved.

No blame falls on the weak, the sick, or those who find nothing to spend, so long as they are sincere to God and His Messenger. There are no grounds against those who do good. God is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Nor on those who, when they came to you so you might provide them mounts, you said, “I have nothing to carry you on,” and they turned away with their eyes overflowing with tears out of grief that they could find nothing to spend.

The grounds are only against those who ask your permission while they are wealthy. They were content to be with those who stay behind, and God has sealed their hearts, so they do not know.

They will make excuses to you when you return to them. Say, “Do not make excuses. We will never believe you. God has already informed us about your affairs.” God will see your deeds, and so will His Messenger. Then you will be returned to the Knower of the unseen and the seen, and He will inform you of what you used to do.

They will swear by God to you when you return to them, so that you may turn away from them. So turn away from them — they are filth, and their refuge is Hell, a recompense for what they used to earn.

They swear to you so that you may be pleased with them. But even if you are pleased with them, God is never pleased with the defiantly disobedient people.

The desert Arabs are more severe in disbelief and hypocrisy, and more likely not to know the limits of what God has sent down to His Messenger. God is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

Among the desert Arabs are those who regard what they spend as a penalty and await misfortune to befall you. Upon them is the turn of misfortune. God is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

Among the desert Arabs are those who believe in God and the Last Day and regard what they spend as means of nearness to God and the Messenger’s prayers. It is truly a means of nearness for them. God will admit them into His mercy. Truly, God is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

The forerunners, the first among the emigrants and the helpers, and those who followed them in goodness — God is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him. He has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow, dwelling therein forever. That is the supreme triumph.

Among the desert Arabs around you are hypocrites, and among the people of Medina — they have persisted in hypocrisy. You do not know them; We know them. We will punish them twice, then they will be returned to a tremendous punishment.

Others have confessed their sins — they mixed righteous deeds with bad ones. Perhaps God will turn to them in mercy. Truly, God is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Take from their wealth a charity to purify them and cleanse them with it, and pray for them — your prayer is a comfort to them. God is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

Do they not know that it is God who accepts repentance from His servants and receives charities, and that God is the Ever-Accepting of repentance, the Most Merciful?

Say, “Work, and God will see your work, and His Messenger, and the believers. You will be returned to the Knower of the unseen and the seen, and He will inform you of what you used to do.”

Others are deferred to God’s command — either He will punish them or He will turn to them in mercy. God is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

Those who built a mosque to cause harm, disbelief, and division among the believers, and as an outpost for whoever waged war against God and His Messenger before — they will surely swear, “We intended nothing but good.” God bears witness that they are liars.

Never stand in it. A mosque founded on righteousness from the first day is more worthy for you to stand in. In it are men who love to purify themselves. God loves those who purify themselves.

Is one who founded his structure on mindfulness of God and His pleasure better, or one who founded his structure on the edge of a crumbling cliff, so it collapsed with him into the fire of Hell? God does not guide the wrongdoing people.

The structure they built will never cease to be a source of doubt in their hearts, unless their hearts are cut to pieces. God is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

God has purchased from the believers their lives and their wealth in exchange for Paradise. They fight in God’s cause — they kill and are killed. A true promise binding upon Him in the Torah, the Gospel, and the Quran. And who fulfills his covenant better than God? So rejoice in the bargain you have made. That is the supreme triumph.

The repentant, the worshippers, the praisers, the journeyers, the bowing, the prostrating, the enjoiners of good and the forbidders of evil, and the keepers of God’s limits — give glad tidings to the believers.

It was not for the Prophet and those who believed to seek forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they were relatives, after it became clear to them that they are companions of the Blaze.

Abraham’s seeking forgiveness for his father was only because of a promise he had made to him. But when it became clear to him that he was an enemy of God, he disowned him. Truly, Abraham was tender-hearted, forbearing.

God would never lead a people astray after He had guided them until He makes clear to them what they should be mindful of. Surely God is All-Knowing of all things.

Truly, to God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. He gives life and causes death. You have no protector or helper besides God.

God has turned in mercy to the Prophet, the Emigrants, and the Helpers who followed him in the hour of hardship, after the hearts of a group of them had nearly swerved. Then He turned to them in mercy. He is truly Compassionate, Merciful to them.

And to the three who were left behind — until the earth, vast as it is, closed in on them, and their own souls closed in on them, and they realized there was no refuge from God except in Him — then He turned to them in mercy so they might repent. Truly, God is the Ever-Relenting, the Most Merciful.

O you who believe, be mindful of God and be with the truthful.

It was not for the people of Medina and the surrounding Bedouins to stay behind from God’s Messenger, nor to prefer their own lives over his. That is because no thirst, no fatigue, no hunger strikes them in God’s cause, and they tread no ground that enrages the disbelievers, and they inflict no blow upon an enemy, except that a righteous deed is recorded for them thereby. Surely God does not waste the reward of those who do good.

They spend no expenditure, small or large, and they cross no valley, except that it is recorded for them, so that God may repay them the best of what they used to do.

It was not for the believers to march out all together. Why not have a group from every division among them go to gain deep understanding of the religion and warn their people when they return to them, so that they may be on guard?

O you who believe, fight those of the disbelievers nearest to you, and let them find harshness in you. Know that God is with the reverent.

Whenever a chapter is sent down, some of them say, “Which of you did this increase in faith?” As for those who believe, it increased them in faith, and they rejoice.

But as for those in whose hearts is a disease, it added filth to their filth, and they died as disbelievers.

Do they not see that they are tested every year once or twice, yet they do not repent, nor do they take heed?

Whenever a chapter is sent down, they glance at one another: “Does anyone see you?” Then they slip away. God has turned their hearts away, because they are a people who do not understand.

Truly a messenger has come to you from among yourselves. What you suffer grieves him. He is deeply concerned for you, and to the believers he is compassionate, merciful.

So if they turn away, say, “God is enough for me. There is no god but Him. In Him I place my trust, and He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne.”
