1They ask you about the spoils of war. Say, “The spoils belong to God and the Messenger. So be mindful of God, mend what is between you, and obey God and His Messenger, if you are believers.”
2The believers are only those whose hearts tremble when God is mentioned, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith, and they put their trust in their Lord.
3Those who establish prayer and spend from what We have provided them.
4Those are the true believers. For them are ranks with their Lord, and forgiveness, and a generous provision.
5Just as your Lord brought you out of your home in truth, while a group of the believers were averse.
6They argued with you about the truth after it had become clear, as though they were being driven to death while they looked on.
7And when God promised you one of the two groups would be yours, you wished that the unarmed one would be yours. But God intended to establish the truth by His words and to cut off the last remnant of the disbelievers.
8So that He would establish the truth and nullify falsehood, even if the criminals despised it.
9When you cried out to your Lord for help, He answered you, “I will reinforce you with a thousand angels, following one another.”
10God made it only as good news and so that your hearts would be reassured by it. Victory comes only from God. Truly, God is All-Mighty, All-Wise.
11When He covered you with drowsiness as a security from Him, and sent down upon you water from the sky to purify you with it, to remove from you the filth of Satan, to strengthen your hearts, and to steady your feet.
12When your Lord revealed to the angels, “I am with you, so strengthen those who believe. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve, so strike above the necks and strike every fingertip of theirs.”
13That is because they opposed God and His Messenger. And whoever opposes God and His Messenger — then surely God is severe in punishment.
14That is yours, so taste it, and for the disbelievers is the punishment of the Fire.
15O you who believe, when you meet those who disbelieve advancing in ranks, do not turn your backs to them.
16Whoever turns his back to them on that day — unless maneuvering for battle or joining another group — has drawn upon himself wrath from God, and his refuge is Hell. What a wretched destination!
17You did not kill them, but God killed them. You did not throw when you threw, but God threw — so that He might grant the believers a fine trial from Him. Truly, God is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
18That is so, and God weakens the scheming of the disbelievers.
19If you sought a verdict, the verdict has come to you. If you desist, it is better for you. If you return, We will return, and your forces will avail you nothing, however numerous they may be — and God is with the believers.
20O you who believe, obey God and His Messenger, and do not turn away from him while you hear.
21Do not be like those who said, “We hear,” while they do not hear.
22Surely the worst of creatures in God’s sight are the deaf and mute who do not reason.
23Had God known any good in them, He would have made them hear. And even if He made them hear, they would have turned away in aversion.
24O you who believe, respond to God and to the Messenger when he calls you to what gives you life. Know that God comes between a man and his heart, and that to Him you will be gathered.
25Be mindful of a trial that will not strike only those among you who have wronged, and know that God is severe in punishment.
26Remember when you were few and oppressed in the land, fearing that people would snatch you away. Then He sheltered you, strengthened you with His support, and provided you with good things, so that you might be grateful.
27O you who believe, do not betray God and the Messenger, nor betray your trusts while you know.
28Know that your wealth and your children are but a trial, and that with God is a tremendous reward.
29O you who believe, if you are mindful of God, He will grant you a criterion, remove your misdeeds from you, and forgive you. God is the possessor of immense grace.
30When the disbelievers plotted against you to imprison you, kill you, or expel you — they plotted and God plotted, and God is the best of plotters.
31When Our verses are recited to them, they say, “We have heard. If we wished, we could say the like of this. This is nothing but tales of the ancients.”
32When they said, “O God, if this is the truth from You, then rain down upon us stones from the sky or bring us a painful punishment.”
33But God would not punish them while you were among them, and God would not punish them while they sought forgiveness.
34Yet why should God not punish them when they bar others from the Sacred Mosque, and they were never its rightful guardians? Its rightful guardians are none but the God-conscious, but most of them do not know.
35Their prayer at the House was nothing but whistling and clapping. So taste the punishment for your disbelief.
36Those who disbelieve spend their wealth to bar others from God’s path. They will spend it, then it will become a source of anguish for them, then they will be defeated. And those who disbelieve will be gathered into Hell.
37So that God may separate the wicked from the good, and heap the wicked one upon another, piling them all together, and cast them into Hell. Those are the losers.
38Say to those who disbelieve, “If they cease, what has already passed will be forgiven them. But if they return, then the precedent of the ancients has already gone before.”
39Fight them until there is no more persecution and religion belongs entirely to God. But if they cease, then surely God is All-Seeing of what they do.
40But if they turn away, then know that God is your Protector. What an excellent Protector and what an excellent Helper.
41Know that whatever you gain as spoils, a fifth of it belongs to God, the Messenger, the near relatives, the orphans, the needy, and the traveler — if you believe in God and what We sent down upon Our servant on the Day of Distinction, the day the two forces met. God is Capable of all things.
42When you were on the near side of the valley and they were on the far side, and the caravan was below you. Had you made an appointment to meet, you would have disagreed over the timing. But it was so that God might carry out a matter already destined — so that whoever perished would perish upon clear proof, and whoever lived would live upon clear proof. Truly God is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
43When God showed them to you in your dream as few — had He shown them to you as many, you would have lost heart and disputed over the matter. But God kept you safe. He is All-Knowing of what lies within the hearts.
44When He made them appear few in your eyes as you met, and made you appear few in their eyes — so that God might carry out a matter already destined. To God all matters return.
45O you who believe, when you meet a force, stand firm and remember God often, so that you may succeed.
46Obey God and His Messenger, and do not dispute with one another lest you lose heart and your strength departs. Be patient — surely God is with the patient.
47Do not be like those who left their homes boastfully, showing off before people, and barring others from God’s path. God encompasses all that they do.
48When Satan made their deeds appealing to them and said, “No one among people can overcome you today, and I am your protector.” But when the two forces came within sight of each other, he turned on his heels and said, “I disown you. I see what you do not see. I fear God.” God is severe in punishment.
49When the hypocrites and those with disease in their hearts said, “Their religion has deluded these people.” But whoever puts his trust in God — surely God is All-Mighty, All-Wise.
50If you could see when the angels take the souls of those who disbelieved, striking their faces and their backs: “Taste the punishment of the Blaze!”
51That is for what your hands sent ahead, and God is never unjust to His servants.
52Like the way of Pharaoh’s people and those before them — they denied God’s signs, so God seized them for their sins. Surely God is All-Strong, severe in punishment.
53That is because God would never change a blessing He had bestowed upon a people until they change what is within themselves, and because God is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
54Like the way of Pharaoh’s people and those before them — they rejected the signs of their Lord, so We destroyed them for their sins and drowned Pharaoh’s people. All of them were wrongdoers.
55Truly, the worst of creatures in God’s sight are those who disbelieve — they will not believe.
56Those of them with whom you made a treaty, then they break their pledge every time, and they are not righteous.
57So if you encounter them in war, make a harsh example of them for those behind them, so that they may take heed.
58And if you fear treachery from a people, cast their treaty back to them on equal terms. Truly, God does not love the treacherous.
59Let not those who disbelieve think they have escaped. They cannot escape.
60And prepare against them whatever force you can and cavalry at the ready, to strike terror into God’s enemy and your enemy, and others beyond them you do not know — God knows them. Whatever you spend in God’s cause will be repaid to you in full, and you will not be wronged.
61And if they incline toward peace, then incline toward it, and put your trust in God. He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
62And if they intend to deceive you, then God is enough for you. It is He who strengthened you with His support and with the believers.
63And He united their hearts. Had you spent all that is on earth, you could not have united their hearts, but God united them. He is All-Mighty, All-Wise.
64O Prophet, God is sufficient for you and for whoever follows you among the believers.
65O Prophet, urge the believers to fight. If there are twenty steadfast among you, they will overcome two hundred. And if there are a hundred of you, they will overcome a thousand of those who disbelieve, because they are a people who do not understand.
66Now God has lightened your burden, for He knows there is weakness among you. So if there are a hundred steadfast among you, they will overcome two hundred. And if there are a thousand of you, they will overcome two thousand, by God’s permission. God is with the steadfast.
67It is not for a prophet to have captives until he has thoroughly subdued in the land. You desire the gains of this world, but God desires the Hereafter. God is All-Mighty, All-Wise.
68Were it not for a decree from God that had already gone before, a tremendous punishment would have touched you for what you took.
69So eat of what you have gained, lawful and good, and be mindful of God. Truly, God is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
70O Prophet, say to the captives in your hands, “If God finds any good in your hearts, He will give you something better than what was taken from you and will forgive you. God is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”
71But if they intend to betray you, they already betrayed God before, and He gave power over them. God is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
72Those who believed, emigrated, and strove with their wealth and their lives in God’s cause, and those who gave shelter and support — they are allies of one another. As for those who believed but did not emigrate, you owe them no allegiance whatsoever until they emigrate. Yet if they seek your help in religion, you must help them, except against a people with whom you have a treaty. God is All-Seeing of what you do.
73Those who disbelieve are allies of one another. Unless you do this, there will be strife in the land and great corruption.
74Those who believed, emigrated, and strove in God’s cause, and those who gave shelter and support — they are the true believers. For them is forgiveness and a generous provision.
75And those who believed afterward, emigrated, and strove alongside you — they are of you. But blood relatives are closer to one another in God’s Book. Truly, God is All-Knowing of all things.
