In the name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.

طه

Ta Ha.

We did not send down the Quran upon you to make you suffer.

Only as a reminder for whoever fears.

A revelation from Him who created the earth and the high heavens.

The Most Merciful, established over the Throne.

To Him belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth and what is between them and what is beneath the soil.

If you speak aloud, He knows the secret and what is even more hidden.

God — there is no god but Him. To Him belong the most beautiful names.

Has the story of Moses reached you?

When he saw a fire, he said to his family, “Stay here. I have spotted a fire. Perhaps I can bring you a torch from it, or find guidance at the fire.”

When he came to it, he was called, “O Moses!

It is I — I am your Lord. So remove your sandals; you are in the sacred valley of Tuwa.

And I have chosen you, so listen to what is revealed.

It is I — I am God. There is no god but Me. So worship Me and establish the prayer for My remembrance.

The Hour is coming — I nearly conceal it — so that every soul may be repaid for what it strives for.

So let not whoever disbelieves in it and follows his desire divert you from it, lest you perish.

And what is that in your right hand, O Moses?”

He said, “It is my staff. I lean on it, and I beat down leaves with it for my sheep, and I have other uses for it.”

He said, “Throw it down, O Moses.”

So he threw it down, and suddenly it was a serpent, slithering.

He said, “Pick it up and do not fear. We will return it to its former state.

And press your hand to your side — it will come out white, without blemish — another sign.

That We may show you some of Our greatest signs.

Go to Pharaoh; he has truly transgressed.”

He said, “My Lord, expand my chest for me.

And ease my task for me.

And untie the knot from my tongue.

So they may understand my speech.

And appoint for me a minister from my family.

Aaron, my brother.

Strengthen my back through him.

And let him share in my task.

So that we may glorify You abundantly.

And remember You abundantly.

Truly, You have always been Seeing of us.”

He said, “You have been granted your request, O Moses.

And We had already favored you another time.

When We inspired your mother with what was inspired.

‘Place him in the chest and cast it into the river, and the river will deliver him to the shore. An enemy of Mine and an enemy of his will take him.’ And I cast upon you love from Me, and so that you would be reared under My eye.

When your sister walked along and said, ‘Shall I direct you to someone who will nurse him?’ So We returned you to your mother, that her eyes might be cooled and she would not grieve. And you killed a soul, but We saved you from distress and tried you with trials. Then you stayed years among the people of Midian, and then you came at the appointed time, O Moses.

And I fashioned you for Myself.

Go, you and your brother, with My signs, and do not slacken in My remembrance.

Go, both of you, to Pharaoh—he has truly transgressed.

Speak to him gently, so that perhaps he may be reminded or fear.”

They said, “Our Lord, we fear that he may act rashly against us or that he may transgress.”

He said, “Do not fear. I am with you both, Hearing and Seeing.

So go to him and say, ‘We are the messengers of your Lord, so send the Children of Israel with us and do not torment them. We have come to you with a sign from your Lord, and peace be upon whoever follows the guidance.

It has been revealed to us that the punishment is upon whoever denies and turns away.’”

He said, “Then who is your Lord, O Moses?”

He said, “Our Lord is the One who gave everything its creation, then guided it.”

He said, “Then what about the former generations?”

He said, “Knowledge of them is with my Lord in a record. My Lord neither errs nor forgets.”

He who made the earth a cradle for you and traced pathways through it for you and sent down water from the sky—and with it We brought out diverse pairs of plants.

Eat and graze your livestock. Surely in that are signs for those of understanding.

From it We created you, to it We will return you, and from it We will bring you out once more.

Certainly We showed him Our signs, all of them, but he denied and refused.

He said, “Have you come to drive us out of our land with your sorcery, O Moses?

We will surely bring you sorcery like it. So set between us and you an appointment that neither we nor you will fail to keep, at a fair place.”

He said, “Your appointment is the Day of Adornment, and let the people be gathered mid-morning.”

So Pharaoh turned away, gathered his schemes, then came.

Moses said to them, “Woe to you! Do not fabricate lies against God, lest He destroy you with a punishment. Whoever fabricates has already failed.”

They disputed their affair among themselves and conferred in secret.

They said, “These two are surely sorcerers who want to drive you out of your land with their sorcery and do away with your exemplary way of life.

So muster your schemes, then come in a row. Whoever prevails today has truly succeeded.”

They said, “O Moses, either you throw or we will be the first to throw.”

He said, “Rather, you throw.” And suddenly their ropes and staffs appeared to him, by their sorcery, to be slithering.

So Moses felt a fear within himself.

We said, “Do not be afraid. You are the one who will prevail.

Throw what is in your right hand — it will swallow what they have crafted. What they have crafted is only a sorcerer’s trick, and the sorcerer never succeeds wherever he goes.”

So the sorcerers fell down in prostration. They said, “We believe in the Lord of Aaron and Moses.”

He said, “You believed in him before I gave you permission? He is surely your chief who taught you sorcery. I will cut off your hands and feet on opposite sides, and I will crucify you on the trunks of palm trees, and you will surely know which of us is more severe in punishment and more lasting.”

They said, “We will never prefer you over the clear proofs that have come to us, nor over Him who created us. So decree whatever you will decree — you only decree for this worldly life.

We have believed in our Lord so that He may forgive us our sins and the sorcery you compelled us to practice. God is better and more lasting.”

Whoever comes to his Lord as a criminal — for him is Hell, where he neither dies nor lives.

But whoever comes to Him as a believer, having done righteous deeds — for those are the highest ranks.

Gardens of Eternity beneath which rivers flow, dwelling therein forever. That is the recompense of whoever purifies himself.

Certainly We revealed to Moses, “Travel by night with My servants and strike for them a dry path through the sea — fearing no pursuit and having no dread.”

Pharaoh pursued them with his armies, and the sea overwhelmed them with what overwhelmed them.

Pharaoh led his people astray and did not guide them.

“O Children of Israel, We saved you from your enemy, appointed for you the right side of the Mount, and sent down upon you manna and quails.

Eat from the good things We have provided you, and do not transgress in it lest My wrath descend upon you — and whoever My wrath descends upon has truly fallen.

Truly I am ever-Forgiving to whoever repents, believes, does good, and then stays guided.”

“What made you hasten ahead of your people, O Moses?”

He said, “They are close behind me, and I hastened to You, my Lord, that You might be pleased.”

He said, “We have tested your people after you left, and the Samaritan has led them astray.”

So Moses returned to his people, angry and grieved. He said, “O my people, did your Lord not make you a good promise? Was the time too long for you, or did you want wrath from your Lord to descend upon you, so you broke your promise to me?”

They said, “We did not break our promise to you of our own will, but we were made to carry loads of the people’s ornaments, and we threw them in — and so did the Samaritan.”

Then he produced for them a calf — a body that lowed — and they said, “This is your god and the god of Moses, but he forgot.”

Do they not see that it returns no word to them and possesses for them neither harm nor benefit?

Aaron had told them before, “O my people, you are only being tested by it. Your Lord is the Most Merciful, so follow me and obey my command.”

They said, “We will not stop devoting ourselves to it until Moses returns to us.”

He said, “O Aaron, what prevented you, when you saw them go astray.

From following me? Have you disobeyed my command?”

He said, “O son of my mother, do not seize me by my beard or by my head. I feared you would say, ‘You divided the Children of Israel and did not heed my word.’”

He said, “What is your case, O Samaritan?”

He said, “I saw what they did not see. I seized a handful from the messenger’s trace and cast it in. Thus my soul enticed me.”

He said, “Go! In this life it is yours to say, ‘No contact!’ And you have an appointment you will not escape. Now look at your god to which you remained devoted — we will surely burn it, then scatter it completely into the sea.”

Your only god is God, there is no god but Him. He encompasses all things in knowledge.

Thus We relate to you from the tidings of what has already passed, and We have given you from Us a reminder.

Whoever turns away from it will carry on the Day of Resurrection a heavy burden.

Abiding in it — and wretched for them is the burden on the Day of Resurrection.

The Day the horn is blown, and We gather the criminals that Day, blue-eyed.

They whisper among themselves, “You stayed no more than ten.”

We know best what they say, when the most upright of them in way says, “You stayed no more than a day.”

They ask you about the mountains. Say, “My Lord will scatter them utterly.

He will leave them a flat, barren plain.

You will see in it no crookedness and no curve.”

That Day they will follow the caller with no deviation from him. Voices will be hushed before the Most Merciful, and you will hear nothing but a faint murmur.

That Day intercession will not avail except for one whom the Most Merciful has permitted and whose word He has approved.

He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they cannot encompass Him in knowledge.

Faces will be humbled before the Living, the Self-Sustaining, and whoever carried wrongdoing will have utterly failed.

But whoever does righteous deeds while he is a believer will fear neither injustice nor deprivation.

Thus We sent it down as an Arabic Quran and varied within it warnings, so that they might become righteous or it might bring about remembrance in them.

Exalted is God, the True King. Do not hasten with the Quran before its revelation to you is completed, and say, “My Lord, increase me in knowledge.”

We made a covenant with Adam before, but he forgot, and We found in him no firm resolve.

When We said to the angels, “Prostrate to Adam,” they prostrated, except Iblis — he refused.

So We said, “O Adam, this is an enemy to you and to your wife. Do not let him drive you both out of the Garden, lest you suffer.

You are guaranteed not to go hungry in it, nor to be naked.

And you will not go thirsty in it, nor be scorched by the sun.”

But Satan whispered to him. He said, “O Adam, shall I lead you to the Tree of Eternity and a kingdom that never decays?”

So they both ate from it, and their nakedness became exposed to them, and they began covering themselves with leaves from the Garden. Adam disobeyed his Lord and went astray.

Then his Lord chose him, turned to him in mercy, and guided him.

He said, “Descend from it, both of you, altogether — some of you enemies to others. But whenever guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance will neither go astray nor suffer.

And whoever turns away from My remembrance will have a miserable life, and We will raise him blind on the Day of Resurrection.”

He will say, “My Lord, why have You raised me blind when I used to see?”

He will say, “Just so — Our verses came to you and you forgot them, and just so today you are forgotten.”

And that is how We recompense whoever was excessive and did not believe in the verses of his Lord. And the punishment of the Hereafter is more severe and more lasting.

Has it not become clear to them how many generations We destroyed before them, in whose dwellings they now walk? Surely in that are signs for people of reason.

Were it not for a word that had already gone out from your Lord — and an appointed term — it would have been inescapable.

So be patient with what they say, and glorify your Lord with praise before sunrise and before sunset, and during the hours of the night glorify Him, and at the edges of the day, so that you may be content.

Do not extend your eyes toward what We have given some pairs among them to enjoy — the splendor of this worldly life — by which We test them. Your Lord’s provision is better and more lasting.

Command your family to pray and be steadfast in it. We do not ask you for provision — We provide for you. And the best outcome belongs to righteousness.

They say, “Why does he not bring us a sign from his Lord?” Has the clear proof of what is in the former scriptures not come to them?

Had We destroyed them with a punishment before him, they would have said, “Our Lord, if only You had sent us a messenger so we could have followed Your signs before we were humiliated and disgraced.”

Say, “Everyone is waiting, so wait. You will come to know who the people of the straight path are, and who is guided.”
