1O you who believe, fulfill your contracts. The grazing livestock have been made lawful for you, except what is recited to you, while you are not to hunt game when you are in a state of pilgrimage. God decrees what He wills.
2O you who believe, do not violate God’s rites, nor the sacred month, nor the sacrificial offerings, nor the garlanded animals, nor those heading for the Sacred House seeking bounty and pleasure from their Lord. When you have left the state of pilgrimage, then hunt. And do not let the hatred of a people who once barred you from the Sacred Mosque drive you to transgress. Cooperate in righteousness and God-consciousness, and do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And be mindful of God. Truly, God is severe in punishment.
3Forbidden to you are carrion, blood, the flesh of swine, what has been dedicated to other than God, the strangled, the beaten to death, the fallen, the gored, what predators have eaten—except what you slaughter before death—and what is sacrificed on stone altars, and that you seek decisions by divining arrows. That is wickedness. Today those who disbelieve have despaired of your religion, so do not fear them, but fear Me. Today I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and chosen Islam as your religion. But whoever is compelled by severe hunger with no inclination toward sin—then God is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
4They ask you what has been made lawful for them. Say, “The good things have been made lawful for you, and what you have trained of hunting animals, training them as God has taught you. So eat of what they catch for you, and mention God’s name over it. And be mindful of God. Surely, God is swift in reckoning.”
5Today the good things have been made lawful for you. The food of those who were given the Scripture is lawful for you, and your food is lawful for them. And chaste women from among the believers and chaste women from among those who were given the Scripture before you—when you have given them their due compensation, being chaste yourselves, neither fornicating nor taking secret lovers. Whoever rejects faith, his deeds have been nullified, and in the Hereafter he will be among the losers.
6O you who believe, when you rise for prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, wipe your heads, and your feet up to the ankles. If you are in a state of major impurity, purify yourselves. If you are ill, or on a journey, or one of you has come from relieving himself, or you have touched women, and you find no water, then turn to clean earth and wipe your faces and your hands with it. God does not wish to place any hardship on you, but He wishes to purify you and to complete His blessing upon you, so that you may be grateful.
7Remember God’s blessing upon you and His covenant by which He bound you, when you said, “We hear and we obey.” Be mindful of God. Truly, God is All-Knowing of what lies within hearts.
8O you who believe, be steadfast for God, witnesses in justice. Let not the hatred of a people drive you to be unjust. Be just — that is closer to God-consciousness. Be mindful of God. Surely, God is All-Aware of what you do.
9God has promised those who believe and do righteous deeds — for them is forgiveness and a great reward.
10Those who disbelieve and deny Our signs — those are the companions of the Blaze.
11O you who believe, remember God’s blessing upon you when a people intended to stretch their hands against you, and He restrained their hands from you. Be mindful of God, and in God let the believers place their trust.
12God took the covenant of the Children of Israel, and We raised from among them twelve leaders. God said, “I am with you. If you establish the prayer, give the charity, believe in My messengers, support them, and lend God a good loan, I will surely erase your sins and admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow. Whoever among you disbelieves after that has strayed from the right path.”
13Because they broke their covenant, We cursed them and made their hearts hard. They distort words from their proper places and forgot a portion of what they were reminded of. You will never cease to discover treachery from them, except a few of them. So pardon them and overlook. Truly, God loves those who do good.
14From those who said, “We are Christians,” We took their covenant, but they forgot a portion of what they were reminded of. So We stirred among them enmity and hatred until the Day of Resurrection. God will inform them of what they used to do.
15O People of the Book, Our messenger has come to you, making clear to you much of what you used to conceal of the Book, and overlooking much. There has come to you from God a light and a clear Book.
16Through it God guides whoever pursues His pleasure to the paths of peace, and He brings them out of darkness into light by His permission, and He guides them to a straight path.
17Certainly those who said, “God is the Messiah, son of Mary,” have disbelieved. Say, “Who could prevent God in the least if He wished to destroy the Messiah, son of Mary, and his mother, and everyone on earth altogether?” To God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and everything between them. He creates what He wills. God is Capable of all things.
18The Jews and the Christians said, “We are God’s children and His beloved.” Say, “Then why does He punish you for your sins?” Rather, you are human beings among those He created. He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills. To God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and everything between them, and to Him is the final return.
19O People of the Book, Our messenger has come to you, making things clear to you after a gap between messengers, lest you say, “No bearer of good news or warner came to us.” Now a bearer of good news and a warner has come to you. God is Capable of all things.
20Remember when Moses said to his people, “O my people, remember God’s blessing upon you when He placed among you prophets, made you kings, and gave you what He had not given anyone in all the worlds.
21O my people, enter the holy land that God has ordained for you, and do not turn back on your heels, or you will become losers.”
22They said, “O Moses, in it is a tyrannical people, and we will never enter it until they leave. If they leave, then we will enter.”
23Two men among those who feared, whom God had blessed, said, “Enter upon them through the gate — once you have entered it, you will surely prevail. And put your trust in God, if you are believers.”
24They said, “O Moses, we will never enter it, ever, as long as they are in it. So go, you and your Lord, and fight. We are sitting right here.”
25He said, “My Lord, I have no power over anyone but myself and my brother. So separate us from the defiantly disobedient people.”
26He said, “Then it is forbidden to them for forty years — they will wander the earth. So do not grieve over the defiantly disobedient people.”
27Recite to them the story of Adam’s two sons in truth: when they both offered a sacrifice, it was accepted from one of them but not accepted from the other. He said, “I will surely kill you.” He said, “God only accepts from the righteous.
28If you stretch your hand toward me to kill me, I will not stretch my hand toward you to kill you. Truly, I fear God, Lord of the worlds.
29I want you to bear my sin and your sin, and so become one of the companions of the Fire. That is the recompense of the wrongdoers.”
30So his soul prompted him to kill his brother, and he killed him, and became one of the losers.
31Then God sent a crow scratching in the ground to show him how to conceal his brother’s corpse. He said, “Woe to me! Am I too helpless to be like this crow and conceal my brother’s corpse?” And he became one of the regretful.
32Because of that, We ordained for the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul — not in retribution for a soul or for corruption in the land — it is as if he killed all of mankind, and whoever saves one, it is as if he saved all of mankind. Certainly Our messengers came to them with clear proofs, yet many of them after that were truly excessive in the land.
33The only recompense for those who wage war against God and His Messenger and spread corruption in the land is that they be killed, or crucified, or have their hands and feet cut off on opposite sides, or be exiled from the land. That is disgrace for them in this world, and in the Hereafter they will have a tremendous punishment.
34Except those who repent before you overpower them. Know that God is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
35O you who believe, be mindful of God and seek the means of nearness to Him, and strive in His cause, so that you may succeed.
36Truly, those who disbelieved — even if they possessed everything on earth and its equal with it to ransom themselves from the punishment of the Day of Resurrection, it would not be accepted from them. For them is a painful punishment.
37They will want to escape the Fire, but they will never escape it. For them is a lasting punishment.
38As for the male thief and the female thief, cut off their hands as recompense for what they earned — a deterrent from God. God is Almighty, All-Wise.
39Whoever repents after his wrongdoing and reforms, then God will turn to him in mercy. Surely God is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
40Do you not know that to God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth? He punishes whom He wills and forgives whom He wills. God is Capable of all things.
41O Messenger, do not be grieved by those who rush into disbelief—among those who say “We believe” with their mouths while their hearts do not believe, and among those who are Jews. They are avid listeners to falsehood, avid listeners on behalf of other people who have not come to you. They distort words from their proper places, saying, “If you are given this, take it, but if you are not given it, beware.” Whoever God wills to put to trial—you will never have any power to help him against God. Those are the ones whose hearts God did not will to purify. For them in this world is disgrace, and for them in the Hereafter is a tremendous punishment.
42They are avid listeners to falsehood, devourers of unlawful gain. So if they come to you, judge between them or turn away from them. If you turn away from them, they will never harm you in the least. And if you judge, then judge between them with justice. Truly, God loves those who are just.
43But how can they make you their judge when they have the Torah, in which is God’s judgment, and then they turn away after that? Those are not believers.
44We sent down the Torah, in it guidance and light. The prophets who submitted judged by it for those who were Jewish, as did the rabbis and the scholars, according to what they were entrusted to preserve of God’s Book, and they were witnesses over it. So do not fear people — fear Me. And do not sell My verses for a small price. Whoever does not judge by what God sent down — those are the disbelievers.
45We prescribed for them in it: a life for a life, an eye for an eye, a nose for a nose, an ear for an ear, a tooth for a tooth, and for wounds equal retaliation. But whoever forgoes it as charity, it will be an expiation for him. Whoever does not judge by what God sent down — those are the wrongdoers.
46We sent Jesus son of Mary following in their footsteps, confirming what was before him of the Torah. And We gave him the Gospel, in it guidance and light, confirming what was before him of the Torah, and as guidance and admonition for the God-conscious.
47Let the people of the Gospel judge by what God sent down in it. Whoever does not judge by what God sent down — those are the defiantly disobedient.
48We sent down to you the Book in truth, confirming what was before it of the Scripture and as a guardian over it. So judge between them by what God sent down, and do not follow their desires away from the truth that has come to you. For each of you We appointed a law and a path. Had God willed, He would have made you one community, but He tests you through what He has given you. So race toward good deeds. To God is your return, all of you, and He will inform you of what you used to differ over.
49Judge between them by what God sent down, and do not follow their desires, and beware of them lest they tempt you away from some of what God sent down to you. If they turn away, then know that God only intends to afflict them for some of their sins. Truly, many of the people are defiantly disobedient.
50Is it the judgment of ignorance they seek? Who is better than God in judgment for a people who are certain?
51O you who believe, do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies. They are allies of one another. Whoever among you allies with them is one of them. Truly, God does not guide the wrongdoing people.
52You see those in whose hearts is a disease rushing toward them, saying, “We fear that a turn of fortune may strike us.” But perhaps God will bring victory or a command from Him, and they will come to regret what they concealed within themselves.
53And those who believe will say, “Are these the ones who swore by God their most solemn oaths that they were with you?” Their deeds have come to nothing, and they have become losers.
54O you who believe, whoever among you turns back from his religion, God will bring a people He loves and who love Him — humble toward the believers, mighty against the disbelievers, striving in God’s way, never fearing the blame of any critic. That is God’s grace; He gives it to whom He wills. God is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing.
55Your ally is only God, His Messenger, and those who believe — those who establish prayer and give charity while they bow.
56Whoever allies with God, His Messenger, and those who believe — then surely God’s party are the victors.
57O you who believe, do not take as allies those who made your religion a mockery and a game — from among those given the Scripture before you and the disbelievers. Be mindful of God, if you are believers.
58When you call to prayer, they take it as a mockery and a game. That is because they are a people who do not reason.
59Say, “O People of the Scripture, do you resent us for anything other than that we believed in God and what was sent down to us and what was sent down before, and that most of you are defiantly disobedient?”
60Say, “Shall I tell you of something worse than that in recompense with God? Those whom God cursed and with whom He was wrathful, and He made from among them apes and pigs and worshippers of false gods — those are worse in standing and further astray from the right path.”
61When they come to you they say, “We believe,” yet they entered with disbelief and they left with it. God knows best what they were concealing.
62You see many of them rushing into sin, aggression, and consuming what is unlawful. How wretched is what they were doing!
63Why do the rabbis and scholars not forbid them from speaking sinfully and consuming what is unlawful? How wretched is what they were producing!
64The Jews said, “God’s hand is chained.” Their hands are chained, and they are cursed for what they said. Rather, His hands are wide open — He spends however He wills. What has been sent down to you from your Lord will surely increase many of them in tyranny and disbelief. We have cast enmity and hatred among them until the Day of Resurrection. Every time they kindle a fire for war, God extinguishes it. They strive to spread corruption in the land, and God does not love the corrupters.
65If the People of the Book had believed and been righteous, We would have erased their sins and admitted them into Gardens of Bliss.
66Had they upheld the Torah and the Gospel and what was sent down to them from their Lord, they would have eaten from above them and from beneath their feet. Among them is a moderate community, but many of them — how evil is what they do.
67O Messenger, convey what has been sent down to you from your Lord. If you do not, then you have not delivered His message. God will protect you from the people. Truly, God does not guide the disbelieving people.
68Say, “O People of the Book, you stand on nothing until you uphold the Torah and the Gospel and what has been sent down to you from your Lord.” What has been sent down to you from your Lord will surely increase many of them in tyranny and disbelief. So do not grieve over the disbelieving people.
69Surely those who believe, those who are Jewish, the Sabians, and the Christians — whoever believes in God and the Last Day and does good — no fear will be upon them, nor will they grieve.
70We took the covenant of the Children of Israel and sent messengers to them. Every time a messenger came to them with what their souls did not desire, some they denied and some they killed.
71They assumed there would be no trial, so they became blind and deaf. Then God turned to them in mercy, then many of them again became blind and deaf. God is All-Seeing of what they do.
72Truly, those who said, “God is the Christ, son of Mary,” have disbelieved. Yet the Christ said, “O Children of Israel, worship God, my Lord and your Lord. Whoever associates partners with God, God has forbidden him Paradise, and his refuge is the Fire.” For the wrongdoers there are no helpers.
73Truly, those who said, “God is the third of three,” have disbelieved. There is no god but One God. If they do not stop what they are saying, a painful punishment will surely strike those among them who disbelieved.
74Will they not repent to God and seek His forgiveness? God is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
75The Christ, son of Mary, was only a messenger — messengers had passed before him — and his mother was a woman of truth. They both used to eat food. Look how We make the verses clear to them, then look how they are deluded.
76Say, “Do you worship besides God what has no power to harm or benefit you?” God — He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
77Say, “O People of the Book, do not exceed the bounds in your religion beyond the truth, and do not follow the desires of a people who went astray before and led many astray and strayed from the right path.”
78Those among the Children of Israel who disbelieved were cursed by the tongue of David and Jesus, son of Mary. That was because they disobeyed and used to transgress.
79They would not forbid one another from the evil they committed. How wretched was what they used to do!
80You see many of them allying with those who disbelieved. How wretched is what their souls sent ahead for them — that God’s wrath fell upon them, and in the punishment they will remain forever.
81Had they believed in God and the Prophet and what was sent down to him, they would not have taken them as allies, but many of them are defiantly disobedient.
82You will surely find the most hostile of people toward the believers to be the Jews and the polytheists. And you will surely find the nearest of them in affection toward the believers to be those who say, “We are Christians.” That is because among them are priests and monks, and because they are not arrogant.
83When they hear what has been sent down to the Messenger, you see their eyes overflowing with tears because of the truth they recognize. They say, “Our Lord, we believe, so record us among the witnesses.
84Why should we not believe in God and what has come to us of the truth, when we hope that our Lord will admit us among the righteous people?”
85So God rewarded them for what they said with gardens beneath which rivers flow, dwelling therein forever. That is the recompense of those who do good.
86But those who disbelieved and denied Our signs — those are the companions of the Blazing Fire.
87O you who believe, do not forbid the good things God has made lawful for you, and do not transgress. Truly, God does not love the transgressors.
88Eat of what God has provided you, lawful and good. And be mindful of God, in whom you believe.
89God does not hold you accountable for idle talk in your oaths, but He holds you accountable for oaths you have bound yourselves to. Its expiation is feeding ten needy people from the average of what you feed your families, or clothing them, or freeing a slave. Whoever cannot find the means, then fasting for three days. That is the expiation for your oaths when you have sworn. Guard your oaths. Thus God makes His signs clear to you, so that you may be grateful.
90O you who believe, intoxicants, gambling, stone altars, and divining arrows are nothing but filth from the work of Satan, so avoid them, that you may prosper.
91Satan only wants to sow enmity and hatred among you through intoxicants and gambling, and to turn you away from the remembrance of God and from prayer. So will you stop?
92Obey God and obey the Messenger, and beware. But if you turn away, then know that Our Messenger’s only duty is clear delivery.
93There is no blame on those who believe and do good deeds for what they consumed, so long as they were mindful and believed and did good deeds, then were righteous and believed, then were God-conscious and did good. God loves those who do good.
94O you who believe, God will surely test you with something of game within reach of your hands and your spears, so that God may know who fears Him in the unseen. Whoever transgresses after that — for him is a painful punishment.
95O you who believe, do not kill game while you are in a state of consecration. Whoever among you kills it deliberately, the recompense is the equivalent of what he killed from livestock, as judged by two just men among you, an offering delivered to the Kaaba — or an expiation of feeding the needy, or its equivalent in fasting — so that he may taste the consequence of his deed. God has pardoned what is past, but whoever repeats it, God will take vengeance on him. God is Almighty, Possessor of Vengeance.
96The catch of the sea and its food are made lawful for you, as provision for you and for travelers, but the game of the land is forbidden to you as long as you are in a state of consecration. Be mindful of God, to whom you will be gathered.
97God has made the Kaaba, the Sacred House, a means of support for people, and the sacred month, and the offerings, and the garlanded animals. That is so you may know that God knows what is in the heavens and what is in the earth, and that God is All-Knowing of everything.
98Know that God is severe in punishment and that God is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
99The Messenger’s only duty is to convey. God knows what you reveal and what you conceal.
100Say, “The foul and the good are not equal, even if the abundance of the foul impresses you. So be mindful of God, O people of understanding, that you may succeed.”
101O you who believe, do not ask about things that, if made clear to you, would distress you. But if you ask about them while the Quran is being sent down, they will be made clear to you. God has pardoned them. God is All-Forgiving, All-Forbearing.
102A people before you asked such questions, then became disbelievers because of them.
103God did not institute a bahirah, nor a sa’ibah, nor a wasilah, nor a ham. But those who disbelieve fabricate lies against God, and most of them do not reason.
104When they are told, “Come to what God has sent down and to the Messenger,” they say, “Enough for us is what we found our fathers upon.” Even though their fathers knew nothing and were not guided?
105O you who believe, guard yourselves. Those who stray cannot harm you if you are guided. To God is your return, all of you, and He will inform you of what you used to do.
106O you who believe, when death approaches one of you, at the time of making a bequest, let testimony among you be by two just persons from among you, or two others from outside you if you are traveling through the land and the calamity of death strikes you. Detain them after the prayer, and if you have doubt, let them swear by God, “We will not sell it for any price, even if it concerns a relative, and we will not conceal God’s testimony — surely then we would be among the sinners.”
107If it is discovered that those two deserved the charge of sin, then let two others stand in their place from among those whose rights were violated — the two nearest — and let them swear by God, “Our testimony is truer than their testimony, and we have not transgressed — surely then we would be among the wrongdoers.”
108That makes it more likely that they will give testimony in its true form, or fear that oaths will be overturned after their oaths. Be mindful of God and listen. God does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.
109The Day God gathers the messengers and says, “What response were you given?” They say, “We have no knowledge. Truly, You are the Knower of all that is unseen.”
110When God said, “O Jesus, son of Mary, remember My favor upon you and upon your mother: when I strengthened you with the Holy Spirit, you spoke to people in the cradle and in maturity; when I taught you the Scripture, wisdom, the Torah, and the Gospel; when you fashioned from clay the shape of a bird by My leave, then breathed into it and it became a bird by My leave; and you healed the blind and the leper by My leave; and when you raised the dead by My leave; and when I restrained the Children of Israel from you when you came to them with clear proofs, and those among them who disbelieved said, ‘This is nothing but plain sorcery.’”
111When I inspired the disciples, “Believe in Me and in My messenger,” they said, “We believe, and bear witness that we submit.”
112When the disciples said, “O Jesus, son of Mary, can your Lord send down to us a table from the sky?” He said, “Be mindful of God, if you are believers.”
113They said, “We wish to eat from it, and let our hearts be at ease, and know that you have told us the truth, and be among its witnesses.”
114Jesus, son of Mary, said, “O God, our Lord, send down to us a table from the sky — it will be a feast for us, for the first of us and the last of us, and a miracle from You. Provide for us, and You are the best of providers.”
115God said, “I will send it down to you. But whoever among you disbelieves after that, I will punish him with a punishment I have not punished anyone in all the worlds.”
116When God said, “O Jesus, son of Mary, did you tell people, ‘Take me and my mother as two gods besides God’?” He said, “Glory be to You! It is not for me to say what I have no right to. If I had said it, You would have known it. You know what is within me, but I do not know what is within You. Truly, You are the Knower of all that is unseen.”
117I said nothing to them except what You commanded me: “Worship God, my Lord and your Lord.” I was a witness over them as long as I was among them, but when You took me, You were the Watcher over them. You are Witness over all things.
118If You punish them, they are Your servants. And if You forgive them, You are the Almighty, the All-Wise.
119God said, “This is the Day when the truthful will benefit from their truthfulness.” For them are gardens beneath which rivers flow, dwelling therein forever. God is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him. That is the supreme triumph.
120To God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and all that is within them. He is Capable of all things.
