1All praise belongs to God, who created the heavens and the earth and made darknesses and light. Yet those who disbelieve equate others with their Lord.
2He is the One who created you from clay, then decreed a term — and a named term is with Him — yet still you doubt.
3He is God in the heavens and on the earth. He knows your secret and your open speech, and He knows what you earn.
4Not a sign comes to them from their Lord’s signs except that they turn away from it.
5They denied the truth when it came to them, so the news of what they used to mock will come to them.
6Have they not seen how many generations We destroyed before them? We had established them on the earth as We never established you, and We sent the sky upon them pouring rain, and We made rivers flow beneath them — then We destroyed them for their sins and raised after them another generation.
7Even if We had sent down to you a book on parchment and they touched it with their own hands, those who disbelieve would have said, “This is nothing but clear sorcery.”
8They said, “Why has no angel been sent down to him?” Had We sent down an angel, the matter would have been settled, and then they would not be given respite.
9Had We made him an angel, We would have made him a man, and We would have confused for them what they already confuse.
10Messengers before you were mocked, but what they mocked closed in on those who ridiculed them.
11Say, “Travel through the earth, then see what became of the deniers.”
12Say, “To whom belongs everything in the heavens and the earth?” Say, “To God. He has prescribed mercy upon Himself. He will surely gather you to the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt.” Those who have lost their own souls — they do not believe.
13To Him belongs whatever dwells in the night and the day. He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
14Say, “Should I take a protector other than God, the Originator of the heavens and the earth, when He feeds and is not fed?” Say, “I have been commanded to be the first to submit,” and do not be among those who associate partners with God.
15Say, “I fear, if I disobey my Lord, the punishment of a tremendous Day.”
16Whoever is spared it on that Day — He has shown him mercy. That is the clear triumph.
17If God touches you with harm, none can remove it but Him. And if He touches you with good, He is Capable of all things.
18He is the Vanquisher over His servants. He is the All-Wise, the All-Aware.
19Say, “What is greatest in testimony?” Say, “God is witness between me and you. This Quran has been revealed to me so that I may warn you with it, and whoever it reaches. Do you truly testify that there are other gods besides God?” Say, “I do not testify to that.” Say, “He is only one God, and I am innocent of what you associate with Him.”
20Those to whom We gave the Scripture recognize him as they recognize their own sons. Those who have lost their own souls — they do not believe.
21Who is more unjust than one who fabricates a lie against God or denies His verses? Surely the unjust will never succeed.
22On the Day We gather them all together, then We will say to those who associated partners with God, “Where are your partners that you used to claim?”
23Then their only excuse will be to say, “By God, our Lord, we were never those who associated partners.”
24Look how they lied against themselves, and what they used to fabricate has deserted them.
25Among them are those who listen to you, but We have placed coverings over their hearts so they cannot understand it, and deafness in their ears. Even if they see every sign, they will not believe in it. Until, when they come to you arguing with you, those who disbelieve say, “This is nothing but tales of the ancients.”
26They forbid others from it and distance themselves from it, yet they destroy none but themselves, and they do not realize.
27If only you could see when they are made to stand before the Fire and say, “If only we could be sent back! We would not deny the verses of our Lord, and we would be among the believers.”
28Rather, what they used to conceal before has become apparent to them. And even if they were sent back, they would return to what they were forbidden from. Truly, they are liars.
29They said, “There is nothing but our worldly life, and we will not be resurrected.”
30If only you could see when they are made to stand before their Lord. He says, “Is this not the truth?” They say, “Yes, by our Lord!” He says, “Then taste the punishment for what you used to deny.”
31Certainly, those who denied the meeting with God have lost. Until, when the Hour comes upon them suddenly, they say, “O our grief for what we neglected regarding it!” And they carry their burdens on their backs. How wretched is what they carry!
32The worldly life is nothing but play and amusement. Surely the home of the Hereafter is better for the God-conscious. Will you not reason?
33We know that what they say grieves you. It is not you they deny, but it is God’s verses that the wrongdoers reject.
34Messengers before you were denied, yet they endured patiently what they were denied and harmed by, until Our help came to them. None can alter God’s words. There has already come to you some news of the messengers.
35If their turning away weighs heavily on you, then if you are able to seek a tunnel into the earth or a ladder into the sky to bring them a sign — had God willed, He would have gathered them all upon guidance. So do not be among the ignorant.
36Only those who listen will respond. As for the dead, God will raise them, then to Him they will be returned.
37They say, “Why has no sign been sent down to him from his Lord?” Say, “God is certainly Capable to send down a sign, but most of them do not know.”
38There is no creature on earth, nor any bird flying with its wings, but they are communities like you. We have neglected nothing in the Book. Then to their Lord they will be gathered.
39Those who denied Our verses are deaf and mute, in darkness. Whoever God wills, He leads astray, and whoever He wills, He places on a straight path.
40Say, “Tell me: if God’s punishment came upon you or the Hour overtook you, would you call upon anyone other than God, if you are truthful?”
41“No, it is Him alone you would call upon, and He would remove what you called upon Him for, if He willed, and you would forget what you associate with Him.”
42We sent messengers to nations before you, and We seized them with hardship and adversity so that they might humble themselves.
43If only they had humbled themselves when Our might came upon them! But their hearts hardened, and Satan made what they were doing seem appealing to them.
44When they forgot what they had been reminded of, We opened upon them the gates of everything, until, just as they were rejoicing in what they had been given, We seized them suddenly — and at once they were in despair.
45So the last remnant of the people who wronged was cut off. All praise belongs to God, Lord of all worlds.
46Say, “Tell me: if God took away your hearing and your sight and sealed your hearts, what god other than God could restore them to you?” Look how We lay out the verses, yet they turn away.
47Say, “Tell me: if God’s punishment came upon you suddenly or openly, would any be destroyed but the wrongdoing people?”
48We send the messengers only as bearers of good news and as warners. So whoever believes and reforms — no fear will be upon them, nor will they grieve.
49Those who deny Our signs — the punishment will touch them for their defiance.
50Say, “I do not tell you that I possess God’s treasuries, nor do I know the unseen, nor do I tell you that I am an angel. I only follow what is revealed to me.” Say, “Are the blind and the seeing equal?” Will you not reflect?
51Warn with it those who fear being gathered to their Lord — they have no protector or intercessor besides Him — so that they may be mindful.
52Do not drive away those who call upon their Lord morning and evening, seeking His face. Nothing of their account falls on you, and nothing of your account falls on them. Were you to drive them away, you would be among the wrongdoers.
53Thus We tested some of them through others, so they would say, “Are these the ones God has favored among us?” Is God not most knowing of the grateful?
54When those who believe in Our verses come to you, say, “Peace be upon you. Your Lord has prescribed mercy upon Himself: whoever among you does evil out of ignorance, then repents after that and reforms — He is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”
55Thus We detail the verses, and so that the way of the criminals may become clear.
56Say, “I have been forbidden to worship those you call upon besides God.” Say, “I will not follow your desires — I would then have gone astray and would not be among the guided.”
57Say, “I stand on clear proof from my Lord, yet you have denied it. I do not possess what you seek to hasten. Judgment belongs to God alone. He declares the truth, and He is the best of judges.”
58Say, “If I possessed what you seek to hasten, the matter would have been settled between me and you.” God is most knowing of the wrongdoers.
59With Him are the keys of the unseen—none knows them but He. He knows what is on the land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but He knows it, nor a grain in the darkness of the earth, nor anything moist or dry, but it is in a clear record.
60He is the One who takes your souls by night and knows what you have committed by day, then raises you in it so that an appointed term may be fulfilled. Then to Him is your return, then He will inform you of what you used to do.
61He is the Vanquisher over His servants. He sends guardians over you until, when death comes to one of you, Our messengers take his soul, and they never fail.
62Then they are returned to God, their true Master. Truly, His is the judgment, and He is the swiftest of reckoners.
63Say, “Who saves you from the darknesses of land and sea? You call upon Him in humility and in secret: ‘If He saves us from this, we will surely be among the grateful.’”
64Say, “God saves you from it and from every distress, yet you associate others with Him.”
65Say, “He is able to send upon you a punishment from above you or from beneath your feet, or to confuse you into factions and make some of you taste the violence of others.” Look how We turn the signs so that they may understand.
66Your people have denied it, though it is the truth. Say, “I am not a guardian over you.”
67Every prophecy has its appointed time, and you will come to know.
68When you see those who engage in mockery of Our verses, turn away from them until they engage in another topic. And if Satan makes you forget, then after remembering, do not sit with the wrongdoing people.
69Those who are God-conscious bear no responsibility for their account, but it is a reminder, so that they may be God-conscious.
70Leave those who have taken their religion as play and amusement and whom the worldly life has deluded. Remind with it, lest a soul be ruined by what it has earned—it will have no protector or intercessor besides God. And if it offers every ransom, none will be accepted from it. Those are the ones who are ruined by what they earned. For them is a drink of scalding water and a painful punishment for what they used to deny.
71Say, “Should we call upon, besides God, what neither benefits us nor harms us, and be turned back on our heels after God has guided us — like one the devils have lured away on earth, bewildered, while his companions call him to guidance: ‘Come to us!’?” Say, “Truly, God’s guidance is the guidance, and we have been commanded to submit to the Lord of all worlds.
72And to establish the prayer and be mindful of Him. He is the One to whom you will be gathered.”
73He is the One who created the heavens and the earth in truth. The Day He says “Be,” it is. His word is the truth. His is the dominion the Day the Horn is blown. Knower of the unseen and the seen, He is the All-Wise, the All-Aware.
74And when Abraham said to his father Azar, “Do you take idols as gods? I see you and your people in clear misguidance.”
75And so We showed Abraham the dominion of the heavens and the earth, that he might be among those with certainty.
76When the night covered him, he saw a star. He said, “This is my Lord.” But when it set, he said, “I do not love those that set.”
77When he saw the moon rising, he said, “This is my Lord.” But when it set, he said, “If my Lord does not guide me, I will surely be among the people who are lost.”
78When he saw the sun rising, he said, “This is my Lord — this is greater!” But when it set, he said, “O my people, I am free of what you associate with God.
79I have turned my face to the One who created the heavens and the earth, a monotheist, and I am not of those who associate others with God.”
80His people argued with him. He said, “Do you argue with me about God when He has guided me? I do not fear what you associate with Him, unless my Lord wills something. My Lord encompasses all things in knowledge. Will you not then remember?
81How should I fear what you have associated, while you do not fear that you have associated with God that for which He has sent down no authority to you? So which of the two groups has more right to security, if you know?”
82Those who believe and do not taint their faith with wrongdoing — for them is security, and they are rightly guided.
83That was Our argument We gave to Abraham against his people. We raise in degrees whoever We will. Your Lord is All-Wise, All-Knowing.
84And We granted him Isaac and Jacob — each We guided. And Noah We guided before, and from his descendants: David, Solomon, Job, Joseph, Moses, and Aaron. Thus do We recompense those who do good.
85And Zechariah, John, Jesus, and Elijah — each was among the righteous.
86And Ishmael, Elisha, Jonah, and Lot — each We favored over all peoples.
87And from their fathers, their descendants, and their brothers — We chose them and guided them to a straight path.
88That is God’s guidance; He guides with it whoever He wills among His servants. Had they associated others with Him, all they did would have been lost.
89Those are the ones We gave the Scripture, authority, and prophethood. If these people reject it, We have entrusted it to a people who will never reject it.
90Those are the ones God guided, so follow their guidance. Say, “I ask you no payment for this. It is only a reminder for all peoples.”
91They did not esteem God as He deserves to be esteemed when they said, “God has not sent down anything to any human.” Say, “Who sent down the Scripture that Moses brought as a light and guidance for people? You put it on scrolls, revealing some and concealing much. And you were taught what neither you nor your fathers knew.” Say, “God.” Then leave them in their idle talk, playing.
92This is a blessed Scripture We have sent down, confirming what came before it, so that you may warn the Mother of Cities and those around it. Those who believe in the Hereafter believe in it, and they are diligent in their prayers.
93Who is more unjust than one who fabricates a lie against God, or says, “I have received revelation,” when nothing was revealed to him, or one who says, “I will send down the like of what God has sent down”? If only you could see when the wrongdoers are in the throes of death and the angels stretch out their hands: “Give up your souls! Today you are repaid with the punishment of humiliation for what you used to say about God other than the truth, and for your arrogance toward His signs.”
94You have come to Us alone, just as We created you the first time. You have left behind what We bestowed on you, and We do not see with you your intercessors whom you claimed were partners among you. The bond between you has been severed, and what you used to claim has forsaken you.
95Truly, God is the splitter of seeds and date stones. He brings the living from the dead and brings the dead from the living. That is God — so how are you deluded?
96The splitter of dawn, He made the night for rest and the sun and moon for reckoning. That is the decree of the All-Mighty, the All-Knowing.
97He is the One who made the stars for you, so that you may find your way by them through the darkness of land and sea. We have made the signs clear for people who know.
98He is the One who produced you from a single soul — then a place of settlement and a place of storage. We have made the signs clear for people who understand.
99He is the One who sent down water from the sky, and with it We brought out the growth of every thing, and from it We brought out green shoots from which We produce clustered grain, and from the palm tree — from its sheaths — hanging clusters, and gardens of grapes, and olives, and pomegranates, alike and unlike. Look at its fruit when it bears fruit and its ripening. Surely in that are signs for people who believe.
100They made the jinn partners with God, though He created them, and they fabricated for Him sons and daughters without knowledge. Glory be to Him! He is exalted above what they ascribe.
101Originator of the heavens and the earth — how could He have a child when He has no companion, and He created all things, and He is All-Knowing of all things?
102That is God, your Lord. There is no god but He, Creator of all things, so worship Him. He is Guardian over all things.
103Vision cannot grasp Him, but He grasps all vision. He is the All-Subtle, the All-Aware.
104Clear proofs have come to you from your Lord. Whoever sees, it is for his own benefit, and whoever is blind, it is to his own loss. I am not a keeper over you.
105Thus We vary the verses — so that they may say, “You have studied,” and so that We may make it clear for people who know.
106Follow what has been revealed to you from your Lord — there is no god but Him — and turn away from the polytheists.
107Had God willed, they would not have associated partners with Him. We have not made you a guardian over them, and you are not a trustee over them.
108Do not insult those they call upon besides God, lest they insult God out of hostility and ignorance. Thus We have made the deeds of every community seem appealing to them. Then to their Lord is their return, and He will inform them of what they used to do.
109They swore by God their most solemn oaths that if a sign came to them, they would surely believe in it. Say, “The signs are only with God.” And what makes you realize that when they come, they will not believe?
110We will turn their hearts and their eyes, just as they did not believe in it the first time, and We will leave them in their transgression, wandering blindly.
111Even if We had sent down the angels to them, and the dead had spoken to them, and We had gathered everything before them face to face, they would not have believed unless God willed. But most of them are ignorant.
112Thus We have made for every prophet an enemy — devils among humans and jinn — inspiring one another with gilded speech as a delusion. Had your Lord willed, they would not have done it. So leave them and what they fabricate.
113So that the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter may incline to it, and be pleased with it, and commit what they are committing.
114Should I seek a judge other than God when it is He who sent down to you the Book, made clear? Those to whom We gave the Book know that it is sent down from your Lord in truth. So do not be among the doubters.
115Your Lord’s word has been fulfilled in truth and justice. None can change His words. He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
116If you obey most of those on earth, they will lead you astray from God’s path. They follow nothing but conjecture, and they do nothing but guess.
117Your Lord knows best who strays from His path, and He knows best the guided.
118So eat of that over which God’s name has been mentioned, if you are believers in His verses.
119Why would you not eat of that over which God’s name has been mentioned, when He has already detailed for you what He has forbidden to you — except what you are compelled to? Truly, many lead others astray by their desires without knowledge. Your Lord knows best the transgressors.
120Abandon sin, both outward and inward. Truly, those who earn sin will be repaid for what they used to commit.
121Do not eat of that over which God’s name has not been mentioned, for it is truly wickedness. The devils do inspire their allies to argue with you, and if you obey them, you are truly polytheists.
122Is one who was dead and We gave him life and made for him a light by which he walks among people like one whose example is in the depths of darkness, never emerging from it? Thus what they used to do was made appealing to the disbelievers.
123And so We placed in every town its greatest criminals to scheme therein. Yet they scheme only against themselves, and they do not realize it.
124When a sign comes to them, they say, “We will never believe until we are given the like of what God’s messengers were given.” God knows best where to place His message. Humiliation before God and a severe punishment will strike those who committed crimes for what they used to scheme.
125Whoever God wills to guide, He opens his chest to submission. And whoever He wills to lead astray, He makes his chest tight and constricted, as though he were climbing into the sky. Thus God places defilement upon those who do not believe.
126This is your Lord’s path, made straight. We have detailed the verses for a people who take heed.
127Theirs is the Abode of Peace with their Lord, and He is their Protector because of what they used to do.
128On the Day He gathers them all together: “O assembly of jinn, you have exploited many of humankind.” Their allies among humankind will say, “Our Lord, we enjoyed one another, and we have reached the term You appointed for us.” He will say, “The Fire is your dwelling, abiding therein forever, except as God wills.” Your Lord is All-Wise, All-Knowing.
129And so We make some of the wrongdoers allies of others because of what they used to earn.
130“O assembly of jinn and humankind, did messengers not come to you from among you, relating to you My verses and warning you of the meeting of this Day of yours?” They will say, “We testify against ourselves.” The worldly life deluded them, and they will testify against themselves that they were disbelievers.
131That is because your Lord would not destroy towns unjustly while their people were unaware.
132For each there are ranks according to what they did, and your Lord is not unaware of what they do.
133Your Lord is the Self-Sufficient, the Possessor of Mercy. If He wills, He can remove you and replace you with whatever He wills, just as He produced you from the descendants of another people.
134Surely what you are promised is coming, and you cannot escape it.
135Say, “O my people, act according to your position — I am acting. Soon you will know whose will be the final home. Truly, the wrongdoers do not succeed.”
136They assigned to God a share of the crops and livestock He created, and they said, “This is for God” — so they claimed — “and this is for our partners.” But what was for their partners never reached God, while what was for God reached their partners. How wretched is their judgment!
137Likewise, their partners made the killing of their children seem appealing to many of the polytheists, to ruin them and to confuse their religion for them. Had God willed, they would not have done it. So leave them and what they fabricate.
138They said, “These livestock and crops are reserved — none may eat them except whom we please” — so they claimed — and livestock whose backs are forbidden, and livestock over which they do not mention God’s name, all as fabrication against Him. He will repay them for what they used to fabricate.
139They said, “What is in the bellies of these livestock is exclusively for our males and forbidden to our wives, but if it is stillborn, they are partners in it.” He will repay them for their attribution. He is All-Wise, All-Knowing.
140Lost are those who killed their children foolishly, without knowledge, and forbade what God had provided them, fabricating lies against God. They have gone astray and were never guided.
141It is He who produced gardens, trellised and untrellised, and palm trees, and crops of diverse taste, and olives and pomegranates, alike and unlike. Eat of their fruit when they bear fruit, and give its due on the day of its harvest, and do not be excessive. He does not love the excessive.
142And of the livestock, some for burden and some for slaughter. Eat of what God has provided you and do not follow Satan’s footsteps. He is a clear enemy to you.
143Eight in pairs: two of sheep and two of goats. Say, “Is it the two males He has forbidden, or the two females, or what the wombs of the two females contain? Inform me with knowledge, if you are truthful.”
144And two of camels and two of cattle. Say, “Is it the two males He has forbidden, or the two females, or what the wombs of the two females contain? Or were you witnesses when God charged you with this?” Who is more unjust than one who fabricates a lie against God to lead people astray without knowledge? Truly, God does not guide the wrongdoing people.
145Say, “I find nothing in what has been revealed to me forbidden to one who would eat it, except that it be carrion, or blood poured out, or the flesh of swine — for it is filth — or a sinful offering invoked to other than God.” But whoever is compelled, neither craving nor transgressing, then your Lord is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
146Upon the Jews We forbade every animal with claws, and of cattle and sheep We forbade them their fat, except what their backs carry, or the entrails, or what is mixed with bone. That is how We repaid them for their transgression, and We are truly truthful.
147If they deny you, say, “Your Lord is of vast mercy, but His punishment will not be turned back from the criminal people.”
148Those who associated partners with God will say, “Had God willed, we would not have associated anything, nor would our fathers, nor would we have forbidden anything.” Likewise did those before them deny until they tasted Our might. Say, “Do you have any knowledge you can produce for us? You follow nothing but assumption, and you do nothing but guess.”
149Say, “To God belongs the conclusive argument. Had He willed, He would have guided you all.”
150Say, “Bring your witnesses who testify that God forbade this.” If they testify, do not testify with them. Do not follow the desires of those who denied Our signs and those who do not believe in the Hereafter, and who set up equals to their Lord.
151Say, “Come, let me recite what your Lord has forbidden you: that you associate nothing with Him, and be good to your parents, and do not kill your children out of poverty — We provide for you and for them — and do not approach indecencies, whether open or hidden, and do not kill the soul that God has made sacred except by right. This He has commanded you, so that you may reason.
152Do not approach the orphan’s wealth except in the best manner until he reaches maturity. Give full measure and weight with justice — We do not burden a soul beyond its capacity. When you speak, be just, even if it concerns a relative. And fulfill God’s covenant. This He has commanded you, so that you may remember.
153This is My path, straight, so follow it. Do not follow other ways, for they will scatter you from His path. This He has commanded you, so that you may be mindful.”
154Then We gave Moses the Book, completing the favor upon the one who did good, and as a detailed explanation of all things, and as guidance and mercy, so that they might believe in the meeting with their Lord.
155This is a Book We have sent down, blessed, so follow it and be mindful, so that you may be shown mercy.
156Lest you say, “The Book was only sent down to two groups before us, and we were unaware of their studies.”
157Or lest you say, “If only the Book had been sent down to us, we would have been better guided than them.” A clear proof has come to you from your Lord, and guidance and mercy. Who is more unjust than one who denies God’s verses and turns away from them? We will repay those who turn away from Our verses with the worst of punishment for their turning away.
158Are they waiting for the angels to come to them, or for your Lord to come, or for some of your Lord’s signs to come? The day some of your Lord’s signs come, a soul’s faith will not benefit it if it had not believed before or earned good through its faith. Say, “Wait — We too are waiting.”
159Those who divided their religion and became sects — you have nothing to do with them. Their affair rests with God; then He will inform them of what they used to do.
160Whoever brings a good deed will have ten times its like, and whoever brings an evil deed will be repaid only its equal, and they will not be wronged.
161Say, “My Lord has guided me to a straight path — an upright religion, the creed of Abraham, a monotheist. And he was not among the polytheists.”
162Say, “My prayer, my worship, my life, and my death are for God, Lord of all worlds.
163No partner has He. With this I have been commanded, and I am the first of those who submit.”
164Say, “Should I seek a lord other than God, when He is the Lord of all things?” Every soul earns only against itself, and no bearer of burdens bears the burden of another. Then to your Lord is your return, and He will inform you of what you used to differ over.
165It is He who made you successors on the earth and raised some of you above others in degrees, to test you through what He has given you. Truly your Lord is swift in punishment, yet He is surely All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
