وَالنَّجْمِ إِذَا هَوَىٰ
By the star when it descends.
The Star · an-Najm · سورة النجم · 62 ayahs
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
In the name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.
مَا ضَلَّ صَاحِبُكُمْ وَمَا غَوَىٰ
Your companion has not strayed, nor has he erred.
وَمَا يَنْطِقُ عَنِ الْهَوَىٰ
He does not speak from desire.
إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحْيٌ يُوحَىٰ
It is nothing but revelation revealed.
عَلَّمَهُ شَدِيدُ الْقُوَىٰ
One mighty in power taught him.
ذُو مِرَّةٍ فَاسْتَوَىٰ
Possessing great strength — he rose to his true form.
وَهُوَ بِالْأُفُقِ الْأَعْلَىٰ
And he was at the highest horizon.
ثُمَّ دَنَا فَتَدَلَّىٰ
Then he drew near and descended.
فَكَانَ قَابَ قَوْسَيْنِ أَوْ أَدْنَىٰ
He was at a distance of two bow-lengths or closer.
فَأَوْحَىٰ إِلَىٰ عَبْدِهِ مَا أَوْحَىٰ
And He revealed to His servant what He revealed.
مَا كَذَبَ الْفُؤَادُ مَا رَأَىٰ
The heart did not lie about what it saw.
أَفَتُمَارُونَهُ عَلَىٰ مَا يَرَىٰ
Will you then dispute with him over what he sees?
وَلَقَدْ رَآهُ نَزْلَةً أُخْرَىٰ
He saw him at another descent.
عِنْدَ سِدْرَةِ الْمُنْتَهَىٰ
At the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary.
عِنْدَهَا جَنَّةُ الْمَأْوَىٰ
Near it is the Garden of Refuge.
إِذْ يَغْشَى السِّدْرَةَ مَا يَغْشَىٰ
When there covered the Lote Tree what covered it.
مَا زَاغَ الْبَصَرُ وَمَا طَغَىٰ
The sight did not swerve, nor did it overreach.
لَقَدْ رَأَىٰ مِنْ آيَاتِ رَبِّهِ الْكُبْرَىٰ
He truly saw some of the greatest signs of his Lord.
أَفَرَأَيْتُمُ اللَّاتَ وَالْعُزَّىٰ
Have you considered al-Lat and al-Uzza?
وَمَنَاةَ الثَّالِثَةَ الْأُخْرَىٰ
And Manat, the third, the other one?
أَلَكُمُ الذَّكَرُ وَلَهُ الْأُنْثَىٰ
Is the male for you and the female for Him?
تِلْكَ إِذًا قِسْمَةٌ ضِيزَىٰ
That, then, would be an unjust division.
إِنْ هِيَ إِلَّا أَسْمَاءٌ سَمَّيْتُمُوهَا أَنْتُمْ وَآبَاؤُكُمْ مَا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ بِهَا مِنْ سُلْطَانٍ ۚ إِنْ يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا الظَّنَّ وَمَا تَهْوَى الْأَنْفُسُ ۖ وَلَقَدْ جَاءَهُمْ مِنْ رَبِّهِمُ الْهُدَىٰ
They are nothing but names you and your fathers have invented. God sent down no authority for them. They follow nothing but conjecture and what their souls desire, even though guidance has come to them from their Lord.
أَمْ لِلْإِنْسَانِ مَا تَمَنَّىٰ
Or does man get whatever he wishes?
فَلِلَّهِ الْآخِرَةُ وَالْأُولَىٰ
To God belongs the Hereafter and the first life.
وَكَمْ مِنْ مَلَكٍ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ لَا تُغْنِي شَفَاعَتُهُمْ شَيْئًا إِلَّا مِنْ بَعْدِ أَنْ يَأْذَنَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ يَشَاءُ وَيَرْضَىٰ
How many an angel in the heavens whose intercession avails nothing, except after God gives permission to whom He wills and is pleased with.
إِنَّ الَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالْآخِرَةِ لَيُسَمُّونَ الْمَلَائِكَةَ تَسْمِيَةَ الْأُنْثَىٰ
Truly, those who do not believe in the Hereafter name the angels with female names.
وَمَا لَهُمْ بِهِ مِنْ عِلْمٍ ۖ إِنْ يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا الظَّنَّ ۖ وَإِنَّ الظَّنَّ لَا يُغْنِي مِنَ الْحَقِّ شَيْئًا
They have no knowledge of it. They follow nothing but conjecture, and conjecture avails nothing against the truth.
فَأَعْرِضْ عَنْ مَنْ تَوَلَّىٰ عَنْ ذِكْرِنَا وَلَمْ يُرِدْ إِلَّا الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا
So turn away from whoever turns his back on Our remembrance and desires nothing but the life of this world.
ذَٰلِكَ مَبْلَغُهُمْ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنْ ضَلَّ عَنْ سَبِيلِهِ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ اهْتَدَىٰ
That is the extent of their knowledge. Your Lord knows best who has strayed from His path, and He knows best who is guided.
وَلِلَّهِ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ لِيَجْزِيَ الَّذِينَ أَسَاءُوا بِمَا عَمِلُوا وَيَجْزِيَ الَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا بِالْحُسْنَى
To God belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth, so that He may repay those who did evil for what they did, and repay those who did good with the finest reward.
الَّذِينَ يَجْتَنِبُونَ كَبَائِرَ الْإِثْمِ وَالْفَوَاحِشَ إِلَّا اللَّمَمَ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ وَاسِعُ الْمَغْفِرَةِ ۚ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِكُمْ إِذْ أَنْشَأَكُمْ مِنَ الْأَرْضِ وَإِذْ أَنْتُمْ أَجِنَّةٌ فِي بُطُونِ أُمَّهَاتِكُمْ ۖ فَلَا تُزَكُّوا أَنْفُسَكُمْ ۖ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ اتَّقَىٰ
Those who avoid the major sins and indecencies, except for minor lapses — your Lord is vast in forgiveness. He knew you best when He produced you from the earth and when you were embryos in your mothers’ wombs. So do not claim purity for yourselves. He knows best who is God-conscious.
أَفَرَأَيْتَ الَّذِي تَوَلَّىٰ
Have you seen the one who turned away.
وَأَعْطَىٰ قَلِيلًا وَأَكْدَىٰ
And gave a little, then held back?
أَعِنْدَهُ عِلْمُ الْغَيْبِ فَهُوَ يَرَىٰ
Does he have knowledge of the unseen, so that he sees?
أَمْ لَمْ يُنَبَّأْ بِمَا فِي صُحُفِ مُوسَىٰ
Or has he not been told of what is in the scriptures of Moses.
وَإِبْرَاهِيمَ الَّذِي وَفَّىٰ
And Abraham, who fulfilled—
أَلَّا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِزْرَ أُخْرَىٰ
That no bearer of burdens bears the burden of another.
وَأَنْ لَيْسَ لِلْإِنْسَانِ إِلَّا مَا سَعَىٰ
And that man has nothing except what he strives for.
وَأَنَّ سَعْيَهُ سَوْفَ يُرَىٰ
And that his striving will be seen.
ثُمَّ يُجْزَاهُ الْجَزَاءَ الْأَوْفَىٰ
Then he will be repaid for it the fullest recompense.
وَأَنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ الْمُنْتَهَىٰ
And that to your Lord is the final end.
وَأَنَّهُ هُوَ أَضْحَكَ وَأَبْكَىٰ
And that it is He who makes one laugh and makes one weep.
وَأَنَّهُ هُوَ أَمَاتَ وَأَحْيَا
And that it is He who causes death and gives life.
وَأَنَّهُ خَلَقَ الزَّوْجَيْنِ الذَّكَرَ وَالْأُنْثَىٰ
And that He created the two mates, the male and the female.
مِنْ نُطْفَةٍ إِذَا تُمْنَىٰ
From a drop when it is emitted.
وَأَنَّ عَلَيْهِ النَّشْأَةَ الْأُخْرَىٰ
And that upon Him falls the second creation.
وَأَنَّهُ هُوَ أَغْنَىٰ وَأَقْنَىٰ
And that it is He who enriches and grants possessions.
وَأَنَّهُ هُوَ رَبُّ الشِّعْرَىٰ
And that it is He who is the Lord of Sirius.
وَأَنَّهُ أَهْلَكَ عَادًا الْأُولَىٰ
And that He destroyed the first Ad.
وَثَمُودَ فَمَا أَبْقَىٰ
And Thamud — He spared none.
وَقَوْمَ نُوحٍ مِنْ قَبْلُ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا هُمْ أَظْلَمَ وَأَطْغَىٰ
And the people of Noah before them; they were more unjust and more tyrannical.
وَالْمُؤْتَفِكَةَ أَهْوَىٰ
And the overturned cities, He hurled down.
فَغَشَّاهَا مَا غَشَّىٰ
So there covered them what covered them.
فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكَ تَتَمَارَىٰ
So which of your Lord’s blessings do you dispute?
هَٰذَا نَذِيرٌ مِنَ النُّذُرِ الْأُولَىٰ
This is a warner among the warners of old.
أَزِفَتِ الْآزِفَةُ
The Imminent Hour draws near.
لَيْسَ لَهَا مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ كَاشِفَةٌ
None besides God can unveil it.
أَفَمِنْ هَٰذَا الْحَدِيثِ تَعْجَبُونَ
Is it at this message that you marvel.
وَتَضْحَكُونَ وَلَا تَبْكُونَ
And you laugh and do not weep.
وَأَنْتُمْ سَامِدُونَ
While you are heedlessly amusing yourselves?
فَاسْجُدُوا لِلَّهِ وَاعْبُدُوا ۩
So prostrate before God and worship.
