اقْتَرَبَتِ السَّاعَةُ وَانْشَقَّ الْقَمَرُ
The Hour has drawn near, and the moon has split.
The Moon · al-Qamar · سورة القمر · 55 ayahs
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
In the name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.
وَإِنْ يَرَوْا آيَةً يُعْرِضُوا وَيَقُولُوا سِحْرٌ مُسْتَمِرٌّ
Yet if they see a sign, they turn away and say, “Persistent sorcery.”
وَكَذَّبُوا وَاتَّبَعُوا أَهْوَاءَهُمْ ۚ وَكُلُّ أَمْرٍ مُسْتَقِرٌّ
They denied and followed their desires, but every matter will settle.
وَلَقَدْ جَاءَهُمْ مِنَ الْأَنْبَاءِ مَا فِيهِ مُزْدَجَرٌ
Certainly there has come to them from the reports what contains deterrence.
حِكْمَةٌ بَالِغَةٌ ۖ فَمَا تُغْنِ النُّذُرُ
Far-reaching wisdom — yet warnings avail nothing.
فَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ ۘ يَوْمَ يَدْعُ الدَّاعِ إِلَىٰ شَيْءٍ نُكُرٍ
So turn away from them. The Day the caller calls to something dreadful.
خُشَّعًا أَبْصَارُهُمْ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ الْأَجْدَاثِ كَأَنَّهُمْ جَرَادٌ مُنْتَشِرٌ
Their eyes humbled, they will emerge from the graves like scattered locusts.
مُهْطِعِينَ إِلَى الدَّاعِ ۖ يَقُولُ الْكَافِرُونَ هَٰذَا يَوْمٌ عَسِرٌ
Racing toward the caller. The disbelievers will say, “This is a hard day.”
كَذَّبَتْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍ فَكَذَّبُوا عَبْدَنَا وَقَالُوا مَجْنُونٌ وَازْدُجِرَ
Before them the people of Noah denied — they denied Our servant and said, “A madman!” and he was rebuked.
فَدَعَا رَبَّهُ أَنِّي مَغْلُوبٌ فَانْتَصِرْ
So he called upon his Lord, “I am overpowered, so help me!”
فَفَتَحْنَا أَبْوَابَ السَّمَاءِ بِمَاءٍ مُنْهَمِرٍ
So We opened the gates of the sky with torrential water.
وَفَجَّرْنَا الْأَرْضَ عُيُونًا فَالْتَقَى الْمَاءُ عَلَىٰ أَمْرٍ قَدْ قُدِرَ
And We caused the earth to burst with springs, and the waters met for a matter already decreed.
وَحَمَلْنَاهُ عَلَىٰ ذَاتِ أَلْوَاحٍ وَدُسُرٍ
And We carried him on a vessel of planks and nails.
تَجْرِي بِأَعْيُنِنَا جَزَاءً لِمَنْ كَانَ كُفِرَ
Sailing under Our watchful eyes — a recompense for him who had been rejected.
وَلَقَدْ تَرَكْنَاهَا آيَةً فَهَلْ مِنْ مُدَّكِرٍ
And We left it as a sign. So is there anyone who will remember?
فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ
So how were My punishment and My warnings?
وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا الْقُرْآنَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِنْ مُدَّكِرٍ
And We have made the Quran easy for remembrance. So is there anyone who will remember?
كَذَّبَتْ عَادٌ فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ
Aad denied. So how were My punishment and My warnings?
إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ رِيحًا صَرْصَرًا فِي يَوْمِ نَحْسٍ مُسْتَمِرٍّ
We sent upon them a screaming wind on a day of unrelenting misfortune.
تَنْزِعُ النَّاسَ كَأَنَّهُمْ أَعْجَازُ نَخْلٍ مُنْقَعِرٍ
Tearing people away as if they were uprooted trunks of palm trees.
فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ
So how were My punishment and My warnings?
وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا الْقُرْآنَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِنْ مُدَّكِرٍ
And We have made the Quran easy for remembrance. So is there anyone who will remember?
كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِالنُّذُرِ
Thamud denied the warnings.
فَقَالُوا أَبَشَرًا مِنَّا وَاحِدًا نَتَّبِعُهُ إِنَّا إِذًا لَفِي ضَلَالٍ وَسُعُرٍ
They said, “Are we to follow a single man from among us? We would then be in error and madness.
أَأُلْقِيَ الذِّكْرُ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ بَيْنِنَا بَلْ هُوَ كَذَّابٌ أَشِرٌ
Was the reminder cast upon him alone out of all of us? No, he is an insolent liar.”
سَيَعْلَمُونَ غَدًا مَنِ الْكَذَّابُ الْأَشِرُ
Tomorrow they will know who the insolent liar is.
إِنَّا مُرْسِلُو النَّاقَةِ فِتْنَةً لَهُمْ فَارْتَقِبْهُمْ وَاصْطَبِرْ
We are sending the she-camel as a trial for them, so watch them and be patient.
وَنَبِّئْهُمْ أَنَّ الْمَاءَ قِسْمَةٌ بَيْنَهُمْ ۖ كُلُّ شِرْبٍ مُحْتَضَرٌ
And inform them that the water is to be shared between them — each drink attended in turn.
فَنَادَوْا صَاحِبَهُمْ فَتَعَاطَىٰ فَعَقَرَ
So they called their companion, and he took hold and hamstrung her.
فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ
So how were My punishment and My warnings?
إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ صَيْحَةً وَاحِدَةً فَكَانُوا كَهَشِيمِ الْمُحْتَظِرِ
We sent upon them a single blast, and they became like the dry stubble of a fence-builder.
وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا الْقُرْآنَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِنْ مُدَّكِرٍ
Certainly We have made the Quran easy for remembrance — so is there anyone who will remember?
كَذَّبَتْ قَوْمُ لُوطٍ بِالنُّذُرِ
The people of Lot denied the warnings.
إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ حَاصِبًا إِلَّا آلَ لُوطٍ ۖ نَجَّيْنَاهُمْ بِسَحَرٍ
We sent upon them a storm of stones, except the family of Lot — We saved them at dawn.
نِعْمَةً مِنْ عِنْدِنَا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِي مَنْ شَكَرَ
As a grace from Us. Thus do We recompense whoever is grateful.
وَلَقَدْ أَنْذَرَهُمْ بَطْشَتَنَا فَتَمَارَوْا بِالنُّذُرِ
He had warned them of Our grip, but they disputed the warnings.
وَلَقَدْ رَاوَدُوهُ عَنْ ضَيْفِهِ فَطَمَسْنَا أَعْيُنَهُمْ فَذُوقُوا عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ
They demanded his guests from him, so We blinded their eyes: “Taste My punishment and My warnings!”
وَلَقَدْ صَبَّحَهُمْ بُكْرَةً عَذَابٌ مُسْتَقِرٌّ
And by early morning, a lasting punishment settled upon them.
فَذُوقُوا عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ
So taste My punishment and My warnings!
وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا الْقُرْآنَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِنْ مُدَّكِرٍ
Certainly We have made the Quran easy for remembrance — so is there anyone who will remember?
وَلَقَدْ جَاءَ آلَ فِرْعَوْنَ النُّذُرُ
The warnings came to Pharaoh’s people.
كَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِنَا كُلِّهَا فَأَخَذْنَاهُمْ أَخْذَ عَزِيزٍ مُقْتَدِرٍ
They denied all Our signs, so We seized them with the seizing of One Almighty, All-Powerful.
أَكُفَّارُكُمْ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أُولَٰئِكُمْ أَمْ لَكُمْ بَرَاءَةٌ فِي الزُّبُرِ
Are your disbelievers better than those, or do you have immunity in the scriptures?
أَمْ يَقُولُونَ نَحْنُ جَمِيعٌ مُنْتَصِرٌ
Or do they say, “We are a united force, victorious”?
سَيُهْزَمُ الْجَمْعُ وَيُوَلُّونَ الدُّبُرَ
Their forces will be routed, and they will turn their backs in flight.
بَلِ السَّاعَةُ مَوْعِدُهُمْ وَالسَّاعَةُ أَدْهَىٰ وَأَمَرُّ
No, the Hour is their appointed time, and the Hour is more devastating and more bitter.
إِنَّ الْمُجْرِمِينَ فِي ضَلَالٍ وَسُعُرٍ
Truly the criminals are in error and blazing fire.
يَوْمَ يُسْحَبُونَ فِي النَّارِ عَلَىٰ وُجُوهِهِمْ ذُوقُوا مَسَّ سَقَرَ
The Day they are dragged into the Fire on their faces: “Taste the touch of Hell!”
إِنَّا كُلَّ شَيْءٍ خَلَقْنَاهُ بِقَدَرٍ
We created everything in precise measure.
وَمَا أَمْرُنَا إِلَّا وَاحِدَةٌ كَلَمْحٍ بِالْبَصَرِ
Our command is but one — like the blink of an eye.
وَلَقَدْ أَهْلَكْنَا أَشْيَاعَكُمْ فَهَلْ مِنْ مُدَّكِرٍ
We have destroyed your kind before — so is there anyone who will remember?
وَكُلُّ شَيْءٍ فَعَلُوهُ فِي الزُّبُرِ
Everything they did is in the records.
وَكُلُّ صَغِيرٍ وَكَبِيرٍ مُسْتَطَرٌ
Every matter, small and great, is written down.
إِنَّ الْمُتَّقِينَ فِي جَنَّاتٍ وَنَهَرٍ
Surely the reverent are in gardens and rivers.
فِي مَقْعَدِ صِدْقٍ عِنْدَ مَلِيكٍ مُقْتَدِرٍ
In a seat of truth, before a Sovereign, All-Powerful.
