The Enrobed · al-Muddathir · سورة المدثر · 56 ayahs

In the name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.

O you wrapped in your cloak.

Arise and warn.

And your Lord — magnify Him.

And your garments — purify them.

And defilement — shun it.

And do not give, expecting more in return.

And for your Lord, be patient.

When the trumpet is blown.

That Day will be a difficult day.

Not easy for the disbelievers.

Leave Me with the one I created alone.

I granted him vast wealth.

And sons present at his side.

And I smoothed everything for him.

Then he desires that I give him more.

No! He has been stubborn toward Our verses.

I will drive him up a grueling ascent.

He thought and he calculated.

May he be destroyed — how he calculated!

Then may he be destroyed — how he calculated!

Then he looked.

Then he frowned and scowled.

Then he turned away and grew arrogant.

And said, “This is nothing but sorcery handed down.

This is nothing but the word of a mortal.”

I will cast him into Saqar.

And what will make you know what Saqar is?

It spares nothing and leaves nothing.

It scorches the skin.

Over it are nineteen.

We have made none but angels as keepers of the Fire, and We have made their number only as a trial for those who disbelieve — so that those given the Scripture may be certain, and those who believe may grow in faith, and those given the Scripture and the believers may not doubt, and so that those in whose hearts is disease and the disbelievers may say, “What did God mean by this as a parable?” Thus God leads astray whoever He wills and guides whoever He wills. None knows the armies of your Lord but He. And it is nothing but a reminder for humankind.

No! By the moon.

And the night as it retreats.

And the morning as it shines.

Truly it is one of the greatest.

A warning to humankind.

For whoever among you wishes to advance or fall behind.

Every soul is held hostage by what it has earned.

Except the people of the right.

In gardens, they will ask one another.

About the criminals.

“What drove you into Saqar?”

They will say, “We were not among those who prayed.

And we did not feed the poor.

And we used to plunge into falsehood with those who plunged.

And we used to deny the Day of Recompense.

Until the certainty came to us.”

So no intercession of intercessors will benefit them.

What is wrong with them that they turn away from the reminder?

As if they were startled wild donkeys.

Fleeing from a lion?

Rather, each one of them wants to be given scriptures spread open.

No! Rather, they do not fear the Hereafter.

No! It is truly a reminder.

So whoever wills may heed it.

But they will not heed unless God wills. He is worthy of mindfulness and He is worthy of forgiveness.
