عَمَّ يَتَسَاءَلُونَ
What are they asking one another about?
The Event · an-Naba' · سورة النبإ · 40 ayahs
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
In the name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.
عَنِ النَّبَإِ الْعَظِيمِ
About the great news.
الَّذِي هُمْ فِيهِ مُخْتَلِفُونَ
Over which they disagree.
كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ
No! They will come to know.
ثُمَّ كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ
Then no! They will come to know.
أَلَمْ نَجْعَلِ الْأَرْضَ مِهَادًا
Did We not make the earth a cradle?
وَالْجِبَالَ أَوْتَادًا
And the mountains as stakes?
وَخَلَقْنَاكُمْ أَزْوَاجًا
And We created you in pairs.
وَجَعَلْنَا نَوْمَكُمْ سُبَاتًا
And We made your sleep a rest.
وَجَعَلْنَا اللَّيْلَ لِبَاسًا
And We made the night a covering.
وَجَعَلْنَا النَّهَارَ مَعَاشًا
And We made the day a livelihood.
وَبَنَيْنَا فَوْقَكُمْ سَبْعًا شِدَادًا
And We built above you seven mighty ones.
وَجَعَلْنَا سِرَاجًا وَهَّاجًا
And We placed a blazing lamp.
وَأَنْزَلْنَا مِنَ الْمُعْصِرَاتِ مَاءً ثَجَّاجًا
And We sent down from the rain clouds pouring water.
لِنُخْرِجَ بِهِ حَبًّا وَنَبَاتًا
To bring out with it grain and vegetation.
وَجَنَّاتٍ أَلْفَافًا
And dense gardens.
إِنَّ يَوْمَ الْفَصْلِ كَانَ مِيقَاتًا
Truly the Day of Separation is an appointed time.
يَوْمَ يُنْفَخُ فِي الصُّورِ فَتَأْتُونَ أَفْوَاجًا
The Day the Horn is blown and you come in crowds.
وَفُتِحَتِ السَّمَاءُ فَكَانَتْ أَبْوَابًا
And the sky is opened and becomes gateways.
وَسُيِّرَتِ الْجِبَالُ فَكَانَتْ سَرَابًا
And the mountains are set in motion and become a mirage.
إِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ كَانَتْ مِرْصَادًا
Surely Hell lies in ambush.
لِلطَّاغِينَ مَآبًا
A destination for the transgressors.
لَابِثِينَ فِيهَا أَحْقَابًا
Remaining in it for ages.
لَا يَذُوقُونَ فِيهَا بَرْدًا وَلَا شَرَابًا
They will taste in it no coolness and no drink.
إِلَّا حَمِيمًا وَغَسَّاقًا
Except scalding water and foul discharge.
جَزَاءً وِفَاقًا
A fitting recompense.
إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا لَا يَرْجُونَ حِسَابًا
They never expected a reckoning.
وَكَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِنَا كِذَّابًا
And they utterly denied Our verses.
وَكُلَّ شَيْءٍ أَحْصَيْنَاهُ كِتَابًا
But everything We have recorded in a book.
فَذُوقُوا فَلَنْ نَزِيدَكُمْ إِلَّا عَذَابًا
So taste! We will never increase you in anything but torment.
إِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ مَفَازًا
Surely for the reverent is triumph.
حَدَائِقَ وَأَعْنَابًا
Gardens and grapevines.
وَكَوَاعِبَ أَتْرَابًا
And full-breasted companions of equal age.
وَكَأْسًا دِهَاقًا
And a cup overflowing.
لَا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلَا كِذَّابًا
They will hear in it no idle talk and no lies.
جَزَاءً مِنْ رَبِّكَ عَطَاءً حِسَابًا
A reward from your Lord, a generous gift.
رَبِّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا الرَّحْمَٰنِ ۖ لَا يَمْلِكُونَ مِنْهُ خِطَابًا
Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, the Most Merciful—none possess the power to address Him.
يَوْمَ يَقُومُ الرُّوحُ وَالْمَلَائِكَةُ صَفًّا ۖ لَا يَتَكَلَّمُونَ إِلَّا مَنْ أَذِنَ لَهُ الرَّحْمَٰنُ وَقَالَ صَوَابًا
The Day the Spirit and the angels stand in rows, none will speak except whom the Most Merciful permits, and who will say what is right.
ذَٰلِكَ الْيَوْمُ الْحَقُّ ۖ فَمَنْ شَاءَ اتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِ مَآبًا
That is the true Day. So whoever wills, let him take a path back to his Lord.
إِنَّا أَنْذَرْنَاكُمْ عَذَابًا قَرِيبًا يَوْمَ يَنْظُرُ الْمَرْءُ مَا قَدَّمَتْ يَدَاهُ وَيَقُولُ الْكَافِرُ يَا لَيْتَنِي كُنْتُ تُرَابًا
We have warned you of a near torment—the Day a man will see what his hands have sent ahead, and the disbeliever will say, “If only I were dust!”
