لَا أُقْسِمُ بِهَٰذَا الْبَلَدِ
I swear by this city.
The Land · al-Balad · سورة البلد · 20 ayahs
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
In the name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.
وَأَنْتَ حِلٌّ بِهَٰذَا الْبَلَدِ
And you are free in this city.
وَوَالِدٍ وَمَا وَلَدَ
And by a father and what he fathered.
لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنْسَانَ فِي كَبَدٍ
Certainly We created man in hardship.
أَيَحْسَبُ أَنْ لَنْ يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ
Does he think no one has power over him?
يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُبَدًا
He says, “I have squandered vast wealth.”
أَيَحْسَبُ أَنْ لَمْ يَرَهُ أَحَدٌ
Does he think no one sees him?
أَلَمْ نَجْعَلْ لَهُ عَيْنَيْنِ
Did We not give him two eyes?
وَلِسَانًا وَشَفَتَيْنِ
And a tongue and two lips.
وَهَدَيْنَاهُ النَّجْدَيْنِ
And guided him to the two paths?
فَلَا اقْتَحَمَ الْعَقَبَةَ
Yet he has not attempted the steep pass.
وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْعَقَبَةُ
And what will make you know what the steep pass is?
فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ
It is the freeing of a slave.
أَوْ إِطْعَامٌ فِي يَوْمٍ ذِي مَسْغَبَةٍ
Or feeding on a day of hunger.
يَتِيمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ
An orphan of close kin.
أَوْ مِسْكِينًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ
Or a destitute person in the dust.
ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْمَرْحَمَةِ
Then being among those who believed and urged one another to patience and urged one another to compassion.
أُولَٰئِكَ أَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ
Those are the people of the right.
وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بِآيَاتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَابُ الْمَشْأَمَةِ
But those who rejected Our signs—they are the people of the left.
عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌ مُؤْصَدَةٌ
Over them is a Fire, sealed shut.
